I am of a decidedly rare school of thought, one that would benefit you all to hear: Azula is not truly evil. She is mental unstable from one of life's most soul-crushing pains: Perceived lack of maternal love. When she was a little girl (as we saw in "Zuko Alone"), Fire-Lady Ursa was hardly ever anything but stern and disciplining toward Azula, while Zuko was given the full force of her love all the time. Because of this, she chose her father's way, and thus became like him. But that is not who she is on the inside. Deep, deep down in her heart, Azula is just a sad little girl who's crying and lashing out at the world because she doesn't believe that her Mommy loved her. In short, Ladies and Gentlemen, all Azula needs is a HUG.

Dude...that is deep...i?? think you are right, but she should of used that painand relized that it was nothing more than emotions she could lock away...that may result in darkness but she would not have turned into an evil being

um...i mean you are right about a part of her...a very small part. Like someone said earlier she is freakin mean and that is what makes her the person she is...and she is a perfectionist...like someone already said...

your right she is a perfectionist but its not her lack of love its her upbringing, she was brought up in an enviroment where competition is percieved as bad and to always come out on top otherwise you are a failure

I suppose the story's naturally biased. There needs do be some kind of antagonist in this kind of plot, and since Zuko isn't really the "evil guy" anymore, Azula gets the part and so, the "mistreated" side to her isn't really a possibility.

Even if Azula was mistreated as a child, does that excuse her current behavior? It may be tragic, it may be sad, it may be unfair, but it is life.?? We live and deal with what we have.?? Azula's past doesn't excuse her current behavior - murdering people (or threatening to murder them) is an inexcusable crime to which the only mitigating factor can be a case of temporary insanity.??

In the case of Azula, she is who she is permanently.?? Zuko had a difficult life too, a life that seems to have been filled with far more hardships than Azula's, and yet he turned out to be a decent person morally.

To those who claim that "Azula doesn't know any better", does she really??? It never seemed to me like she was searching for enlightenment, merely self-gratification.

I appreciate your "Anne Frank" mentality, 2wingo, but sometimes people don't deserve sympathy. Besides, Zuko and Azula's mother only doted on Zuko because Azula literally got all the attention from everyone else for being a firebending prodigy. I pity Zuko, not Azula. Azula's just a spoiled brat who's more than willing to hurt others in her pursuit of perfection.

Azula is mal-adjusted.?? There's really no way around it.?? I discount the idea that she never got attention from her mother because there are no indications she ever wanted any.?? Even as a young girl, Azula was manipulative.?? She tormented Ty Lee at the circus to coerce her into joining the team.?? She would throw whole loaves of bread at the ducks.?? She was always commenting on the terrible events that could or were occuring.?? She watched as their father burned Zuko.?? She didn't care that their mother was gone.?? I wouldn't be surprised if she tried to take the Fire Nation thrown herself.?? Both Zuko and Azula grew up in the same environment, but Azula was the one that embraced the pain and suffering of others.?? Perhaps Zuko came out better because he had the positive influences of his mother's and uncle's love.

I admit, you're probably right. My biggest weakness has always been that I??often see more good in people than they actually have. That, and my belief that no one is beyond redemption for the horrible things they've done in life.

Basically Azula's Yin to Zuko's Yang....two different ends of the spectrum...but there can be only ONE...

Holy crap, so if Zuko and Azula fight, when one dies would the other become godlike powerful? Azula is evil, that does not mean that she can't someday become good: look at all those people on death row how they say they have found religion and have change??? either that or their faking it to try to get off death row.

Actually, I agree. Azula seemed to be 'daddys girl', but Zuko got his moms attention. Since she felt she wasn't going to get anything from her mom, she turned to her dad, who basically turned her into, as another poster tried to avoid saying, a mini-Hitler. And yes, she was mental, but who's to say there wasn't something that made her that way?? Hitler Stalin, etc. were all supposed to have been messed up in the head too, and had a fairly bad past.

Ah well the thing is a person like Azula may abuse religion like the middlle ages they just have to say they did it for god and they think there after life is happy.....but then again the wcked has been smite..
