I'm not saying she didn't die, I'm saying that AZULA didn't kill her. OZAI was the one that was ordered to kill Zuko as punishment for his disrespect, if Zuko's mom took his place, it would be OZAI who killed her.
i completely agree with everything u been saying.. i think that was y ozai seemed so sad (at least to me) when zuko was at the pond asking where his mom was cuz he had juss killed her
If the Fire Lord Azulong had died the night before, why would the Ozai have to kill his wife the next morning? (Azulong's wishes were that Ozai succeed him, probably if he killed his son.) And how did Ozai substitute his wife for his son? Remember he hasn't displayed much love for his son in the past. He'd more likely kill his son over his Wife, to ensure Azula gets the throne after himself. With Zuko alive, to speak not all is ready. Most likely Zuko's mom kills Azulong to make sure the only (highest if there are more)??son there succeeds, and to protect Zuko. Zuko's mom I strongly believe ran away, and I'm just going to state what I believe... you don't have to believe what I have said. (sorry if it seems like I've come on strong)

i really don't know wat to believe because with all the theories Zuko's grandfather was killed, well how did he (and y) did he change the will so that the throne would go to Ozai, if he was killed before anything happened to Zuko the first born? or to his mother, though it could have happened quickly Zuko's mom being killed his grandfather witnessing it and changing the will, then Ozai killed him?? i don't know i'm just kind of tossing up ideas..

I think your right. The Mom obviosly thought Zuko was her favorite. And Ozai liked Azula.

here is what i think happened. Zuko's mom killed the grandfather becaues she wanted to protect Zuko. I think this for two reason.

    1. When they were feeding the duck things Zuko's mom said that mothers always protect their young

    2. She said that everything i did, i did for you.." or something like that.

How did Ozai get the throne then? He still wasn't 1st in line. There is??a contraversy behind this. And why would She run away? It makes no sense to simply run away and that's it, even if she didn't want to take part of it, I doubt she would leave her children alone. Why would the dad be sad. If he was that motivated to kill his own father why woudl he look sad once he knows he gained the throne. And then there is Azula mocking zuko for not having mom around.
Just my theory: Too many possibly situations and too much "grey-area" to answer how Ozai became Fire Lord. Zuko's mom ran away for murdering Azulon(g). Wouldn't you be sad if your dearly beloved wife killed your father, and was on the run from "justice"? (she betrayed the fire nation, can NEVER come back now). I think Azula knew that her mother killed Azulon(g), think about her being "sarcastic" and lieing a lot.

I believe Zuko's mom said something on the lies that a mother would "Fight for her children". If she was to be substituted, she doesn't know if it would all work out. So she had to take it into her own hands.

I guess everything we say will just be theories until someone who makes the show or a character in the show??clearly states it.

OMG! I think you're right...I think Zuko's mom was the one who killed Azulon! I had forgotten about the duck scene but now I remember! "That's how mothers are...you mess with their babies and they'll fight back!" By killing Azulon, she ensured that Ozai would get the throne without having to go through with Azulon's "punishment"...but she couldn't stay in the Fire Nation after doing something like that. Sad, sad, sad...

And although Azula is EVIL, I do agree that it is sorely Ozai's fault. HE taught her fire moves, HE taught her war tactics and history, HE taught her how to be pure evil. If only Azula had spent time with her mom like Zuko did...

So what does Zuko do now? He seemed to have snapped out of the kind of behavior he showed in his last appearance, i.e. masked robbery and all that. Will he seek Iroh back out?

Azula seems to know a lot more about what happened to her mother and grandfather than Zuko does. I'll bet she'll taunt him with the truth later on.

Did you see the size of Ba Sing Sei's walls? And that was just the outer wall. I can't wait for the show to take us there.

Its so easy to see why Zuko is so messed up, what with having that THING for a sister. Azula is more evil than Ozai. When will we hear about more Zuko and Mai? Where is Ba Sing Sei? When will we hear more about Iroh's journey to the spirit world? How will those two men factor into chasing after Toph? Is Zuko's mom still alive?!!! So many questions!

Man everytime the show shows more of Zuko the show just gets better. (ex. The storm, avatar state, Zuko Alone, The blue spirit, siege of the north pole part 1 and 2 and more I can't remember).

Well I don't know about the rest of you but the story that stood out to me was Iroh's...He was about to win, the main wall had just fallen and the siege was about over then his son died in battle and he left the battle...I'm sure that the writers are going to give Iroh his own episode soon to show what happened and his trip to the spirit world.

And did anyone else hear that Iroh was meant to be Fire Lord?

In the finale of the show I bet it is Iroh who is made Fire Lord and he says that Zuko will be his successor.

    Yeah ISpeakTheTruth, I wouldn't say that's a definite but it's a real possibility.?? I give it a 50-50 chance either way.??

I no longer think that Iroh is going to die, there is definitely more to his story, possibly including a Big Finale brother showdown.?? I lost a lost all respect for Ozai in this episode.?? It seems like he got to the throne the way Azula would, by sneaky means and not by any merit.?? It was pretty obvious by his words and tone of voice that Azulon considered Iroh to be far superior to Ozai.?? He was also utterly unimpressed with Azula's flamethrowing.

I think the writers??deliberately left some vagueness there to make us wonder ALL SEASON LONG what exactly happened to Zuko's mom and what she "did" for Zuko, and they probably won't answer that until, oh, a year from now.??

SO AWSOME!!!! I'm staying out of the what really happened to Zuko's mom and grandfather. I'd perfer to wait and find out for sure than spend hours worring over it.(like I probably will anyway)

I will now tell everyone how proud of Zuko I am. He showed all through the episode that he has strong moral principles. And durning the fight I keep saying, "d** it! Zuko use firebending!" And when he did I was so happy! Then when he told who he was with the raw power of fire around him(that was so cool...or hot?), he proved to me that he truly is the rightful FireLord. And he held his head high even when the villagers were being jerks.

I have always respected Zuko for not giving up and for being moral(most the time anyway) even when most people weren't. But after this episode my respect has tripled. I can only hope(or bribe the writers...wait I have no money...nevermind) that he will continue to see what the war has done and decide that when he becomes FireLord he will help Aang keep the peace. Also I hope him and Iroh meet up and that he kicks Azula's butt at some point.

P.S. Him and Mai were so cute!

I agree with you. Ozai is a failure. He used his own daughter to impress Azulon which didn't do anything.?? Can't he impress his father with his own skills? I hope in the episode witht eh walls and secrets or something it'll tell more of Iroh.

This episode made me love Zuko so very much.?? I felt so bad for him, I just wanted to reach out and hug him when he was younger.??

This episode answered a lot, not to mention gave a lot of surprising facts.?? Like how his uncle was suppose to originally be the Fire Lord. And where Zuko got his soft/moral side from--cause it sure as heck wasn't his father's doing.?? As a matter of fact, him and Azula are like mirror images of their parents: Zuko's a dead ringer for his mother while Azula totally takes after father.

The look Azula gave at the very end when they were bowing was just down right evil.?? The child was a spawn for satan from the start.

I hope Zuko kicks Azula's butt later on.?? Either that, or Katara does it.?? Somebody.

I feel bad about Zuko's mother--I loved her.?? She was so great.?? I hope what I think happened didn't happen.?? And I'm also beginning to wonder what happened to Zuko's grandfather...

    HOLY CRAP.

I'm going to do my best here to keep this from being a jumbled mess of words; but keep in mind as you read this that I'm suffering sleep deprivation, and emotional uproar from tonights episode.

NEVER, I mean NEVER, have I been so emotionally stirred by an episode of Avatar like??I was while watching this one. I ALMOST CRIED. The back story was amazing, and there were so many sad quotes in this one. And am I the only one that wanted to murder that little kid at the end?

Wow. Just WOW. best episode of the series, it even beats "The Blue Spirit"! I hope the crew on the show recieves word about how much we all loved this episode.
It was actually PAINFUL for me to watch the opening, seeing Zuko in that state. I loved how he bonded witht that kid for a while... ("Where'd you get that scar?" *Zuko hammers his own thumb*)
Once firebender.com gets the new screencaps up, I want to point one in particular: When Zuko gets back up and starts firebending, and you see him in the flames; he looke absolutely awesomely demonic for a moment! (There's your flaming swords, sly!)
I'm having trouble figuring out exactly what happened though; and it's REALLY nagging me.
I don't have much time before I keel over and fall asleep on my keyboard, so I'll just sum up some of the parts that had the most effect on me, be they happy or sad, with a brief list:

    1. The one that mellomuse mentioned was my fav; "My name is Zuko!"
    2. The beginning of the flashback with the ducks; seeing Zuko so happy like that with his mom was really heartwarming.
    3. The expressions during the whole "Flaming Apple" thing; they were just hilarious! Poor Mai was all "WTF" as Zuko launched himself towards her. That was one of my favorite lighter moments in the episode.
    4. The said scene with Zuko firebending with the swords-- just purely amazing!
    5. Also the said "Where'd you get the scar?" thing; it just made me laugh.
    6. Zuko's mothers little monolouge before she disappeared;

Really, it was all just so spectacular! There are a??ton more things that I would like to say about the episode, it was just so downright amazing; but I REALLY need to go catch up on my sleep now before I leave tomorrow. (Hopefully, I'll have an internet connection; if not, I at least burned the episode to a DVD.)

    This is my fave quote

Thug: How do you explain how there is an egg on my head

    Zuko: A bird flew by.

I loved that and this episode was the BESTEST (I know it is not a real word) At least now we all know Mai and Zuko is a possiblility and y Ozia got the thrown but wat the hell happened to Zuko's mom? OH ya another one of my fave quotes.

Lee: Where did you get your scar?

*Zuko hits his thumb with the hammer*

"The look Azula gave at the very end when they were bowing was just down right evil.?? The child was a spawn for satan from the start."

From the start? Hardly, it was obvious that Ozai corrupted her.?? Didn't you notice that as the flashback went on, she got more and more evil??? At the start, she was kinda cute, she and Zuko were even playing together before the presents from Iroh arrived.?? But as the whole thing went on, she started becoming more and more like Ozai, and Ozai even confirmed that it was his doing ("show Lord Azulon the techniques you practiced with me.")

I'm not saying Azula isn't pure evil (she totally is) but she definately isn't devilspawn, she's corrupted youth.
