Just thought I'd add to the table.

Um... Bumi and metal. First of all, he was trapped in a FIRENATION cage, they get rid of ALL TRACES of EARTH in them so that when they trap EARTHBENDERS, they stay trapped.

Now I must ask you... WHY?????
why would firenation do this if "Metal Bending is so "unique""?

because it isn't and they've seen it many times before is the only conclusion I can make to this.

Also, remember that last we saw Bumi, he CHOOSE to stay trapped, meaning he had no reason to get out of that cage.

now granted those trapped earthbenders on that firenation slave-ship couldn't bend their way out, I will say it is rare, but It isn't just Toph who can bend Unreformed metal. (aka Earthnation metal).

I based my decision on what we seen them do so far, and so far it seems that Toph would win.

First of all, it seems that Toph knows more higher levelled techniques. Ex. ground-skating, rock armour, metalbending and a lot of defensive moves.

We only seen Bumi do a couple good techniques, but nothing really "fancy" compared to Toph. Secondly, expereince doesn't always win over raw talent (at least not in the avatar world) ex, Azula, Aang, and of course Toph.

    Thirdly, she has Tophness

I would like to point out again, that I am basing my decision on what we seen so far. Bumi many have a few tricks up his sleeve, but I can't "assume" he is better just because I haven't seen those tricks yet.

Actually gold is metal, so Toph can probably bend that too! cause he has Tophness!

Ok, now your just being riduclous. If Toph can bend metal, why wouldn't she be able to bend liquid metal. I mean Katar can bend frozen and liquid water.

Got anything else that needs to be shot down?

Bumi hasn't really shown his true power but Toph has.
    From what I think,
Bumi can unleash a powerful force of earthbending.

*suddenly is hit by a wave of scenes where Toph is metal bending the two guys from Terminator*

Who is the successor for Bumi's kingdom, anyways? If Toph could beat him in a match, would she inherit it? But I doubt she'd like the job.

    Just picture this:

Bumi gets Toph in a quicksand move where only the area around her is composed of sand. But she forces herself to be sucked underground and pulls him underground as she resurfaces.

See, she could also use her disadvantage as an advantage once she learns Bumi finds out that her weakness is sand.

Based on what we've seen in the show, I think Toph has a??chance of winning. She can bend metal, send up several pillars of earth at once, and flatten stairs! We haven't seen Bumi do any of these yet. Plus Toph sees through the vibrations of the Earth. That being the case, she can sense the moves right before they are carried out.

However, it could be, that we haven't seen Bumi give his full power yet. I don't think he has. With over a hundred years of experience. He has no doubt seen, and learned many forms of earthbending, and many extroadinary??techniques.?? BUT that hasn't been shown yet.

So, on face front, Toph seems like she could win, but it would be a long, drawn out fight.

What is so special about Toph's metal-bending skills? Yes, it's cool. And yes, with some time & training it could become really useful. But right now it's completely a novelty & only really useful for escaping enclosed spaces. As far as we've seen, she has to be touching the metal to bend it, & even then it's very basic control that can't even be used for much of anything.

    "Just picture this:

Bumi gets Toph in a quicksand move where only the area around her is composed of sand. But she forces herself to be sucked underground and pulls him underground as she resurfaces." - Remember when Aang fought Bumi? He melted into the earth & used it to transport him through solid stone up to where Sokka & Katara were waiting. Not much of an advantage.

"I think Toph has a chance of winning. She can bend metal, send up several pillars of earth at once, and flatten stairs!" - Are these really that impressive? I covered metal bending. But what's so great about the rest? I'm quite certain that Bumi can send up multiple pillars of earth at the same time, & flattening stairs seems like something even the most inexperienced earthbender could do.

I mean when has Toph ever shown the ability to do the things Bumi can do? Remember when he lifted that huge mass of stone at the end of his fight with Aang? That thing had to weigh tons! And he's shown the ability to solidify & de-solidify things at will, travel through the earth, & generally be VERY creative & adaptive in his attack style. I don't care if Toph is able to evade attacks well. So is Aang. When Aang tried that, Bumi started using attacks that hit him indirectly, such as shooting a rock at the ceiling so that the debris would knock him down. Again, he easily out-classed Aang, & Aang made Toph look like a joke.

I actually registered an account specifically to chime in on this. First, to dispel a few falsehoods:

"An opponent with no training/experience is a difficult opponent": False. - An opponent with no training (& by "training" I mean any kind of repeated experience that leads to the honing of combat skills) is a joke. Their actions may be wild, but they are incredibly predictable. The only thing easier is an opponent with just a little bit of experience, because then they usually THINK they know what they're doing, & they fall into easily predictable patterns.

"Originality can compensate for lack of experience against a more experienced opponent": False. - In martial arts, raw talent is something, but the absolute, number-one, greatest factor that leads to excellence is experience (experience in this case = time + brains + hard work). That's why martial arts is one of those unique areas where the oldest are usually the best, whereas in the rest of life we look to the young & "healthy" as the most promising. In true Kung Fu, he who has had the most time to train, will almost always be the better fighter.

Anyway, as to the rest, it's all subjective & part of the show. However, Toph has definately not "mastered" metal-bending, any more than she has "mastered" earth bending. Aang made a joke out of her in their first encounter. And Bumi is not only more skilled, he's a lot smarter in fighting. Remember, every time we see Bumi we learn that he knows more than he tells. Between that & his ability to "think outside the box," he may know more about the limits of earth/metal bending than anyone. He's certainly more than smart enough to figure out Toph's weaknesses, & he's definately the more skilled Bender.

Now, if we put Bumi in suspended animation until Toph is a century or so old, THAT would be a great match.

This was very well thought out.?? Good job.?? I am very much for Bumi winning too.?? However I do give credit where credit is due.?? A lot of people are saying because of Bumi's experience he would win.?? I basically say it is because he has many tricks up his sleeve that he has yet to reveal.??
Now as for the age/ experience thing.?? I suggest that everyone checks out "The Book of Five Rings."?? It is in the bargain books at Barnes & Noble.?? Anyway the Author is Miyamoto Musashi.?? He is a self taught master of Martial Arts who won many fights in his time.?? He was very young when he won his first sword match.?? Therefore in my eyes it is not only experience that can win a fight but technique and wisdom too.?? Toph has some good knowledge and technique.?? Granted it is not like Bumi's but she would give him a great fight.

She would be a great asset to the Fire Nation considering she could pull out the impurities. As it stands now, the FN probably employs centrifuges to separate the components of earth.

Bumi is old... a little crazy and still stuck in a metal box

bumi is stuck in a metal box because he wants it (i even think he enjoys it) and another thing to earthbend you must have direct contact to ground, and bumi is in a metal box and he can still earthbend my conclusion he's using metal bending to get to the earth to earthbend

Didn't he say that as long as they didn't cover up his face, he can still earthbend?

So, if we gave him a blindfold and then we give Toph shoes (to prevent direct contact with the earth), it'd look like a pretty even fight.

Very good conclusion Lord Darkboy.?? DygitalNinja, consider yourself smited.?? Darkboy is right about that.?? Toph is tough but we have seen many of her tricks.?? Bumi still has many tricks that make him powerful.?? Think about what he did with Aang.?? He maintained control over the fight with Aang and still beat him.?? Whereas Aang beat Toph easily in the tournament.??

Not exactly because if you remember in Bitter Work, Toph had no problems blind folding Aang.?? As we all know Bumi already knows how to listen to the earth the same way that Toph does. That was the whole thing about Neutral Jing.?? We also know that there are more Jings that he is aware of.?? Therefore he has more knowledge than Toph.
