I like this one, but I don't suppose we'll ever know. First, the avatar would need to realize something's amiss. Then the avatar spirit (with Aang's appearance) would direct the new avatar to find a way to learn airbending anew (since it must have some idea about how the first airbenders learned airbending).

Oh, I'm depressed now: "new avatar"?!

But you think we would have seen at least one other airbender standing with Gyatso.

Maybe gyatso was distracting the fire nation troops so that other air benders had time to regroup or escape. I mean, it is a whole temple, there HAD to be more bodies, so the theory does kind of fit.

Maybe airbender bodies tend to evaporate? If so does that would mean earthbender bodies sink into the earth, firebender bodies spontaneously combust and water benders turning into a puddle?

How did the earth nation people get up to the northern air temple then? The same way that the attacking fire nation got up there... walking up the mountain.

that's what i was thinking! i mean the Air Nomads seemed the wisest out of all of the nations, so you would have thought that one of them would think, 'i know! a load of us can distract them, while some more go and warn the other temples incase they haven't been attacked yet!' so say they managed to get to the northern and eastern temples (since they are basically in EK territory), they could have gone into hiding and are now re-grouping!

but no one will ever know the answer to this anyway, at least not until something on the show confirms that they are all gone, or if we see some more airbenders! but if Aang does have children, and then they have children, even if it's with other nations, airbenders will still be born so eventually there will be actual airbenders for the avatar spirit to be reincarnated into.

If Aang has an airbending child, and that child has another airbending child, and that child has another airbending child, and so on, then it could go on long enough and the Air Nomads could return, but they would be like hybrid people. Of course it would only be a 50/50 chance because, IT IS NOT IMPOSSIBLE TO HAVE KIDS WITH PEOPLE FROM DIFFERENT NATIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! As long as the airbending spirit remains in the family, there COULD be another airbending avatar. More airbenders or not, the Air Nomads have a chance of repopulating.

lol, 400 years worth of incest to make sure the cycle keeps going, hahaha...

That reminds me -- if the avatar spirit could do that, it (with Roku's appearance) could do the same for Aang so he could learn firebending. The avatar spirit must know that Aang could still learn it from someone.

Why not? It happens in the wild, so it can happen with people, too. Species can still survive despite a shallow gene pool; recessive traits aren't always destructive. The ones that are will die off, leaving their more-fit brethren.

there has to be incest. a baby just doesn't pop up out of nowhere, bender or non-bender. sure, two benders can have a non-bender and two non-benders can have a bender, but how do you think they get the baby in the first place?

geez... it was a nice thread while it lasted!?? The last thread where they started talking "sexual" got locked real fast.

FYI everyone needs to look up the ACTUAL definition of incest because earthbender with earthbender is NOT incest AND I sincerely doubt this should even be a topic on this forum or any forum related to a child's cartoon.

Okay, when he said something about the swamp tornado, something clicked in my mind. I remember reading somewhere about the Avatar Trading Card Game. It seemed cool, and it was, but it did something that I didn't expect. It had characters who had not been introduced to the storyline yet! So, IF the anime actually follows the card game, then I know that Aang is NOT the last airbender. Now when I read about the swamp in IdeaBender's post, I remember reading about a so-called "Malu: the Ghost Witch" card who was actually an airbender. The particular web page that I remembered had the description of Malu and actually stated that she was an airbender. Unfortunately, I couldn't find the exact page. HOWEVER, I DID find another web page which is in the same web site which has another card of Malu, except this one unfortunately does not dub her "The Ghost Witch".
Here's the address: (without the quotes) "http://www.musogato.com/avatar/tcg/pics.php?baseset/chamber_malu200.jpg"
Again, this is only true if the anime follows the Card Game. Although I'm pretty certain it will.

I will continue to search for that specific web page and I will edit my post accordingly once I find it.

Also, as I have provided ample warning before I disclosed this information, NO ONE should comment that I've spoiled it for them. If you read the warning, and you read this anyway, and it ruined your life, then that's your fault.

firstly the next avatar will be born into the water tribes : how is he/she gonna learn airbending when there are no more airbenders to teach him/her .... but i still think that there are other airbenders still alive and this show is a comedy/adventure and all comedies have a happy ending so you cant just have the avatar world go into dark caous when there are no more airbenders left

secondly?? monk gyatso was the greatest airbender of all time ( aang said in ep 103) and his was the only body they found so i think that gyatso attacked the firenation by himself while the other airbenders went into hidng but was killed in the process and that could explain the helmet that sokka found in the same ep

In the Avatar's world, the first known benders learned it, and they were not borned with it.

Example: The first Waterbenders learned it from the moon. Earthbending was taught by the Badger Moles, Oma and Shu learned Earthbending from the moles as mentioned in the legend from "The Cave of the two Lovers". How the moles learned Earthbending has yet to be revealed, same with fire and air, but you should get the point.

like he said in the episode, he came to??the Eastern Air Temple years ago after having a vision of helping the Avatar so, he couldn't be an airbender. But what i want to know is how he reached the temple. Isn't it like 50 stories tall

Who's to say a couple Airbenders didn't go nomadic before the Fire Nation attacked?? Or that some escaped?? In the Trading Card Game, there's this one card...Here, you read it! ((I got it off Wikipedia))

    Malu the Ghost Witch

Malu, the??ghost witch??of the mountian, arose as a figure of??Earth Kingdom??legend in the years following the Fire Nation's first strikes. An enigmatic beauty who supposedly controlled the spirits, and seemingly vanished and appeared at will, Malu was truly an Airbender, whose??mother hid her in a mountain cave to escape the Fire Nation's storming of the Eastern Air Temple. Her parents were Airbender monks and some of the war's first casualties. For years, she lived a solitary existence, and though no one knows for sure, some say she still makes her home in the mountain passes.

my idea of a finale needs airbenders as the three other nations?? appear in the background lead by thier respective gaang member andthe leader of thier army. earthkingdom by landsurfing (my name for making the land move beneath you without it seeming to) air nomads bybisen and water tribe by surfing with thier feet instead of a board.

my idea of how they survive is the north eatern air temple. this is located underwater and is only accessable by flying down a tunnel of air made in the water. they evacuated as many people as they could (which explains the lack of bones from dead airbenders at the temples).it would be an oasis with a large pool of water. loads of grass and trees to keep the air fresh and a mountain head right in the middle where the airtemple is located.
