there is no way that can be true.?? there have been numerous references to metal bending in episodes (see above comments) and in "the guru" episode.?? the fire nation specifically heats up and properly smelts thier metal to prevent metal benders from tearing them a new one.?? i will admit though i'm curious if toph can still metal bend fire nation metal.?? she is even more unique than other benders so mabye she still can because of the way she sees.?? that uniqueness can't have been forseen in firenation smelting processes to prevent metal bending.

    ??

a better question though.?? why metal bend when you can diamond bend??? in the "crossroads" episode aang covers himself with gems that are laying around and the mini tent to enter the avatar state.?? isn't it then possible to bend the hard known substance and launch it at various things or do major damage??? are the impurities there?

the carbon would make daimonds to hard to bend and they'd just break apart daimonds are not flexible like other types of rock.

maybe it's not. After all metal is just refined and processed earth.

the Guru's line was more meant to hint at what was to come for Toph

and the FN is very advanced with their metalurgy, their metal would be more refined anyway. Its not just for Earthbenders.

something to think about...if Toph wasn't the first (and only) metal bender and there were in fact others...why would anyone bother with the metal prisions and why would Xin Fu and Master Yu be so surprised when Toph bends out of the prision?

If metal bending were possible for normal earthbenders, you would think they would be aware of the ability. Xin Fu even says that Toph might be the best earthbender, but even she can't bend metal. So obviously this is a never before heard of ability.

The metal-moldering earthbenders of {Avatar-world} history probably didn't want the secret to get out. Since earthbenders can't push the ground or the air to bend metal, {most of} the rest of the world probably thought it impossible.

    Ugh... people don't get it...

It has been PROVEN that the only way to metalbend is to locate the bits of earth left in the metal, and then bend those in order to force the metal into a shape.?? Metalbending is??impossible by anyone who doesn't have Toph-like detection or a radar.?? In fact, considering how Toph's parents treated her, Toph is probably the first metalbender ever, and is most likely the first to be recorded even by mouth.?? There are no other metalbenderas in the world as far as anyone knows, and Aang's comment was his wishful thinking.?? Toph might be able to teach Aang metalbending if his Avatar powers will allow him to sense the impurities, but no other earthbenders will be able to learn.?? (Unless they are born both blind and an earthbender and with Toph's unique power, which is about one in a billion or so.?? The odds are just a guess, though.)

    It's this simple(I'll use a basketball analogy):

Take Kobe Bryant and ask him to drain a couple jumpers. No prob for Kobe Kob. Now blind fold him and spin him around a few times, then ask him to drain a couple jumpers. Big prob for Kobe Kob. But, take the blind folded Kobe, put him at the free throw line, tell him he's at the free throw line, what direction the goal is in, then let him shoot. He'll make a couple, probably sink them all once he gets a feel for it. The lesson? Once you know something is there, you stand more of a chance on affecting it even if you can't actually see it.

Toph knows where the impurities in the metal are and is physically targeting those, but if someone were to tell you, "You're not trying to bend the metal, but the impure portions of it." I don't see any reason why they wouldn't get the metal to move for them. Maybe not as well as Toph, but still...

The way I see it, Toph is bending the metal. She just does it indirectly through the rock impurities, but never the less, the metal does bend as a result of it.

its already been shown though that you don't need to see to bend as long as you know its there examp- when aang and katara bend the water in the ground in jet

You really have to take things on Wiki with a grain of salt.

In most 4 element settings, metal is considered to be of the element earth. Earth normally includes rock, sand, dirt and metal, sometimes wood but that's more the exception than the rule.

I would say that Toph does bend the metal itself. "Metal is simply refined earth" said the guru, so it's not that she's only bending the little particles of dirt in it, she simply needed to notice that they are in fact present. I'm sure she'll soon put two and two together and realize that she can bend it just as she does "normal" earth. It's much more difficult, just like firebenders wielding lightning, but it can be done and she'll probably teach Aang to do it too.

Maybe its something that only blind people can do... ever thought of that?

well its a new concept so we don't have all that much info on it, but my guess is that its an analog to lightning bending, making it harder.

Finally! Some intellegence comes into the argument! The kid has a point: its only been done twice, so we have no info on it.

Give DFY a nice cookie! He has earned it! And with only two posts! A fine addition to TV.com!

Btw, welcome to TV.com's avatar forum!

I like the idea that she makes the metal brittle by forcing the silicates et al out of formation. It may be a lost art, and Aang may have heard tales, but, as of now, as far as we know, the thought only occurs to Patik and Aang, Toph, and even to Sokka and The King, who were eyewitnesses to Toph's beauteous feat.

I completely understand what everyone is saying, but you guys have given one heck of a headache reading all of those posts.

I think Toph might be able to bend FN metal after she gets more experience. Nuff said for me.
