    Navy

The Fire Nation's navy comprises coal-powered ironclad warships. In addition to its sturdy properties, the Fire Nation's use of metallurgy to remove impurities from the metal ensures that Earthbenders cannot damage their ships with their powers. These vessels serve many purposes, from ferrying and disembarking troops to providing bombardment with their catapults to creating blockades.

In one particular episode, captured Earthbenders were forced into labor to work on a mid-ocean shipyard, and knowing that they couldn't bend the metal of the rig, many of the captured Earthbenders lost their will to fight.

The Fire Nation's navy is very large; Admiral Zhao laid siege on the Northern Water Tribe with hundreds of ships, and the Fire Nation certainly has many more. However, almost all of that fleet was destroyed during Siege of the North, Part II when Aang became the physical incarnation of the ocean spirit, leaving only a few survivors to retreat.

since the rig was made of firenation metal it hade no earth fragments due top their propersmelting abilities

yes we do firenation metal is properly smeltered so that there is no traaces of earthminerals in it so that earthbenders cannot bend it

Personally, I think the Earthbenders in Imprisoned did not even try. They thought they could not do it and so they gave up before they started.

Like I said,??I don't think??she's??bending the metal itself, only the impure earth within the metal. So if the metal is 100% pure, it may be a no go. But, who knows, maybe the Fire Nation got cheap on the metal work. I mean every single one can't be 100% purified. We'll see how this plays out...

It would be incredibly hard to get 100% of the impurities out of metal, I don't care how much magic fire they can shoot. Just because they can bend fire, doesn't mean that they can smelt everything perfectly. They can make more, because they don't need a large fuel source to power their furnaces.

I read somewhere that the Fire Nation's metal was more refined that any other nation's (like the Earth Kingdom). So, Toph might go to metal-bend a ship right out of the water and it won't work, because the bits of earth in it are too scarce or too small. That would make for an interesting situaion. But yeah, in conclusion, I think we may be sorely disappointed with Toph's metalbending capabilities. They can't make her too powerful or?? else why wouldn't they just send Toph into a sea of FN ships and let her have at it? The show would get boring if there was no challenge.

    Pixies and fairy dust.

It will be interesting to see Toph up against a tank or war ship though.

One at a time, maybe. But if they overpower her any more, she'll never get to fight. She already doesn't fight enough.

All very interesting points. But I look at it like this: If Toph senses the impurities in metal, she must do it like how she senses everything, with her feet, through vibrations. Remember in The Blind Bandit, where Toph spotted those mini ants on a piece of grass about ten feet from Aang. If she can do that, she should be able to see the impurities in metal that are out of reaching distance but fairly close lying on the ground. Therefore, she should be able to bend the impurities and therefore contort the metal and throw it. But I still think she wouldn't be able to walk up to a Fire Nation ship, wave her hand, and blow it to bits. You'd need to have meditated for like a month to do that.

i think its a physical thing. especially since there is so little pure earth left in the metal to bend. we must remember that it is not 'metalbending'. she is simply bending the unrefined earth in the metal.

o, and i just wanted to add:

Metalbending is to Earthbending as Lighting is to Firebending.

not quite...Lightning bending, though rare, is still a good deal more common than metal bending.

Firebenders have apparently been using lightning for a while, whereas Toph is the first ever Metal bender. The only reason she could to it in the first place was because of her completly unique earth-sense which allowed her to see the impurities in the Metal prison.

If her bending was not based on the impurities there would be no point in pointing them out to us when she was punching the walls.

So Metal bending is more than likely a Toph specific ability since she is the only one who can see the impurites and bend them due to her earth sense.

since it was ek metal its going to have fragments but as seen by sokka fn metal has different metal work so obviously they aren't going to hav fragments
