In "The Waterbending Master", Katara was superior and from there on. Aang's superiority only lasted one episode, which I think was merely used to set up "The Waterbending Scroll"'s plot.

Proving more than ever the writers are digging themselves into a hole! If he was better once, he's better for ever.

Not necessarily. Just cause Aang had a freaky knack for Waterbending doesn't really mean he will always be better than Katara. He's carefree and was seen not taking his training seriously. Katara did take training seriously and worked very hard. Though her sudden superiority to Aang and now teaching him is, well... noticeable and a major plothole.
He wasn't taking training seriously in TWS. Remember at first he wanted to go into the pond for a swim (he got all the way into his speedo, until Katara told him to put his pants back on). And he did the "over-the-head-flare" which Katara believed was unnecessary. In that episode he was fooling around too but still got it VERY easily. They made Aang seem like a weakling, and Katara was all of a sudden a master waterbender, and they even received THE SAME TRAINING! Aang had a knack for learning before, so why would that disappear now? He's got the Avatar spirit inside him, he just has to awaken the waterbender inside him. Katara tought herself apparently to do like 3 moves and Aang caught on MUCH quicker because he's already a waterbending master inside, he just needs a teacher to work with and awaken that part of him. Katara, however, is not a reincarnation of anything, so she has nothing to draw off of and even when working with a master/teacher would naturally take longer for her to learn a move than the freakin' Avatar. You see, the Avatar has a natural learning curve with all the elements EXCEPT their natural opposite, hence why Aang caught on to air, water, and fire so quickly, but had trouble with earth. The fact still remains, though, that Aang should have been one-step ahead of Katara, as they went to the North Pole to teach AANG how to master waterbending, not KATARA. Katara a mary-sue? Ehhh...I don't know about that, she's not that extreme...yet. The fact still remains Katara is really not a master, and she should have progressed faster than Aang in their waterbending. I guess Katara is all about herself. We saw it in TWS, and again in the TWM and the season 1 finale when she pretty much told Pakku to f-off and then hogged all his training for herself. That's her flaw, she's selfish.

Dang, poodude, you took my job!

It took awhile but I happen to like Katara now. Yes, she's not a perfect character; she has flaws and strengths like any other human. And I think the idea she hogged all the training at the NP is highly likely. It helps explain why she advanced so quickly without a need for a plot jump; though I wouldn't call her selfish in learning Waterbending, just ambitious. She was the sole Waterbender of the South Pole, it made her feel special. Being a Waterbender is her identity, but when she saw Aang do even better than her it was damage to her ego. Sometimes people need to have a lesson in humiliation, it helps us realize we're not hot stuff and should be opened to learn more and grow. Heck, I'm a talented writer but I know as well as my teachers I still have a lot to learn before I write novels professionally.

On the subject why Katara is a Master Waterbender, the writers were probably faced with the task of either slowing Katara's progress and diminishing a huge part of her character (She is the representation of Water, she needs to be strong and skilled for that purpose alone) or doing an unrealistic plot jump where she gained Master status overnight. Neither choice it very pleasant but its better storytelling that they did the unrealistic plot jump.

And for all you calling Katara a Mary Sue, shut up. I prefer a strong, developed character that sometimes reeks of MS when she's the only girl around as opposed to a weaker character. Anyone watch Naruto? Yeah, Haruno Sakura is the perfect example when girls lacking the "Sue-traits" (as everyone put it) are the heroine in the story. Give me a Katara over a Sakura any day.

Both excellent points. And when I call Katara a Mary Sue or perfect I mean that in the show. She lacks flaws and is seen as perfect in the show. In real life, I find flaws in her: like her lack of flaws or too much praise, and of course, her huge advancement in Waterbending.

Her flaw is her lack of flaws? O-O

I'm guessing your now aiming this at her character, but the people who made her character?

Well, in the show, she's forgiven for every bad thing she's done, no matter how much danger Katara got herself and the others in for her own selfish reasons, "The Waterbending Scroll" and "The Waterbending Master". No one makes fun of her, except Toph, but that's just part of her character. She makes fun of everyone, and even then, Toph only called Katara "Sugar Queen", which isn't really an insult. Katara obviously has flaws, but none are pointed out on the show, like everyone else. In the show, she's perfect. Whereas here, in real life, I find that Katara's flaw in the show is that no one else sees her flaws.

Determination...that's the only reason i can see as to why Katara "passed" up Aang as far as Waterbending is concerned...Aang would rather play with animals than train, so i'm sure Katara worked her butt off to get where she is...and anyway...what would be the point if Katara was still as weak as she was in The Waterbending Scroll? Zuko would have killed her if she was still that weak...and we don't even see Aang waterbend that much...who's to say she's really ahead of Aang?

Aang mastered moves Katara took months to learn in one try. Then, only after what I guess is about between two days and a week, Katara became a Waterbending Master, a feat that takes everyone years of practice to learn. Even for the Avatar. Then in the second season, Katara becomes Aang Waterbending Master, how the hell did that happen? See, its completely unreasonable.

I don't see how she became a master. She became quite good, but not a master. The moves she used when fighting Zuko were not complex in any way... except for a few of 'em.

Katara is not a Mary Sue, she's a heroine, and here's why... When you have protagonists of a story there are certain roles they can fit into. Katara fits into the Goddess role, a motherly figure yet also the lover to the hero. She's good-hearted and kind, protective of her loved ones, wise and mature beyond her years. There is the mother in her, yet remember the lover. She's beautiful and a rare kind of spirit, she stands next to Aang's side through anything (better or for worse). She's closer to him than any other soul (Save Appa). I see a tradition and legacy in her of the female spirit. I'm in love with the Goddess and all her incarnations, I see her in Katara. That's also why I am enarmored with Avatar Kyoshi, because she represents the themes of the Goddess I admire the most. A woman's worth, strength in character and spirit, her unyielding will, and her Amazon-like might were a woman can stand tall as any man.

Al right, now "Goddess" speech aside. Yes, millions of feminine characters like Katara have been done before, however what makes Katara a heroine instead of a Mary Sue is because the writers aren't following the trend of stereotypical heroine, they understand the tradition and legacy behind a character such as Katara and strives to capture that ancient and revered spirit. And NO ONE get me started on Aang, Toph, or Zuko.

What do you mean? WHEN was she dubbed a water-bending master??? I don't remember them calling her a master except for when Pakku says "call her Msater Katara" which doesn't count because there "master" means "master over Aang" not "master over waterbending"

Master Pakku in "Siege of the North Pole Part Two: then he better start calling you Master Katara.
Pakku was dubbing Katara a master. Not just to Aang, but as a Waterbending Master. Everyone else knows that Pakku named Katara a Waterbending Master then. But how he said it was referring to what Katara and Pakku were discussing.
Master Pakku: I've decided to go to the South Pole. Some other benders and healers want to join me. Its time we rebuild our sister tribe.
Katara: What about Aang? He still needs to learn Waterbending.
Master Pakku: Then he better get used to calling you Master Katara.
See, Pakku dubbed Katara a master while linking it into their conversation.

Interesting and well said point. But can you support your "Katara's not a Mary Sue" theory by including Katara's needed faults within the show?

Personally I do not think that she is a waterbending master, nor does the show portray her as such, but perhaps I infer differently than the majority. Of course, I have high standards: I don't even think Toph is an earthbending master, whereas Bumi is.

she tried so hard to improve her bending without someone teaching her.. so naturally when katara teaches aang that katara took months to train by herself was achieved by aang in just a few minutes(because his the avatar). then remember that they got a SCROLL from the pirates thats when katara got her primary moves(4 moves to be exact) then those moves can also be combined(?I guess). from then onwards katara practiced hard and hard I say maybe even every night. notice when jeong-jeong teaches ang firebending katara was practicing water bending. Katara was specifically doing the BASICS that is needed to master bending just as iroh said "remember your basics prince Zuko". well? any commentS? i forgot some of what im gonna say...(er, type)

Uh, so she just cause Katara tried hard, she amazingly surpassed the superior bender Aang and became a master? Not a good defense, sorry.

that's EXACTLY why she passed up Aang...she trained and Aang did nothing but play with Momo or whatever other animals that were around...ya snooze ya lose...that's just the way it is...remember master pakku? "Raw talent alone is not enough." and then they show Aang, like usual, playing with Momo

Presicely. If, however, you need extra fuel for out side of the arguement, remember that we haven't seen Aang fight with waterbending. He could be really close to Katara in skill.
