katara just advanced faster and is better than aang at waterbending cause 1. she cares about it and 2. aang still needs to work on his other two elements. nothing in the show suggested anything like "he didn't want to hurt her feelings". if he really didn't want to hurt her feelings, he wouldn't have done so well in episode 9

why wouldn't aang care about waterbending he needs to master it, so wouldn't it make more sense to master it quickly so he could go on to the other elements, and you don't have to care about a certain job to do well at it, emily dickeson didn't care about her poems, they were just an release, she didn't care if they were published or not, she did it because it got her to relax and she had fun doing it, aang has fun waterbending thus should of learned it a lot faster then katara

I really don't like Katara. Like you said they hyped her up way too much and frankly it's sickening. I hope they tone her down...soon.

Aang has fun with water bending but he was not being taught the fun stuff he was being taught the more combat orientated skills, by a very stern teacher no less. I see it kinda as being taught about guns. All Aang wants to do is shoot and have fun(the good parts), but what Paku was teaching was the maintenance and cleaning of a gun(the boring difficult parts).

It could be, for Katara's mastering waterbending, that she was favored by the moon spirit.?? Aside from wanting to master water and being a waterbending nerd, she was in close proximity to the fish as compared to when they were traveling.

I think they are going to link all of the bending as originating from and linked to the animal spirit guides. If there is a yin and yang to each animal, it could explain why there is no distinction between good-guy benders and evil-guy benders and why the avatar is needed as the balance.

This theory could have a million flaws, but it is one nonetheless.

I think that blitzwing17 and zukone make good points.

Aang is not the most patient person around, learning firebending for example. Also, maybe after the whole ordeal with getting Katara to be able to learn from Pakku, Aang just didn't respect him enough to learn from him. A

nd the thing with the moon spirit is an interesting take on it.

We can also see that Aang is progressing fast. I mean look how fast he learned the octopus move thing. For all we know it took Katara a longer amount of practice time till she was able to teach it to Aang who learned it in a few minutes. Plus, just because someone can't do something amazingly well doesn't mean they can't teach it. It's just a different way of thinking and looking at things. Maybe you can't correct it in yourself but you know what is wrong.

I can't remember if it is in the last episode of the 1st season or the first episode of the 2nd season, but in whichever one it is - Pakku makes a comment to Ketara on her commitment to practicing and because of it she has now mastered waterbending, then he turns to Aang and makes a comment somewhat to the effect of "although some are naturals, they must still practice instead of constantly playing" to which Aang makes a snowman.?? SO this basically explains WHY Ketara masters waterbending BEFORE Aang.

Let us not forget that Aang has the ability to learn fast when he wants to and previous episodes have shown us that he has a way of tapping into this natural talent to enhance whatever element he is using.?? Think about the episode "The Storm".?? Aang had barely began to waterbend YET he was able to use some impressive moves on the ship when rescuing Sokka and the fisherman.?? I believe this same "natural" ability of his enhanced his Earthbending during the Zoo scenes in "Tales of Ba Sing Se".

Katara is the Lana Lang of this series. Unjusifiably powerful, the most beautiful girl in the world, the one everyone loves, and when she gets hurt everyone is sad for her. Anyone else think she's a little too amazing for her own good?

Way too "amazing". Like I said i'm hoping they tone her down soon, probably not gonna happen but I mean, it's getting to the point where I fast forward all the parts with Katara on the show. I'm just sick of her, and I'm sick of everyone (in the avatar world at least, and crazy Katara fans here) loving her.AND WHAT REALLY P*SSES ME OFF IS THAT THEY PUT TOPH DOWN AND NOT KATARA!!! What the hell was with that? I mean Katara's makeup looked just as bad and considereing she's the one most likely to have applied for obvious reasons, why would the creators have these girls make fun of Toph and not her?! I thought they were toning her down but lately all they've seemed to do is hype her up and I can't take it anymore. If I hear one more word about her, I swear to God she'll be dead to me. DEAD. I'll forget she existed what so ever. She won't even be a character to me anymore.

*A bit over dramatic, I had like 16 cups of coffee today. That and come on, they do hype her up, and it is annoying. So, so, so annoying.

    Finally, someone understands.
Toph is always being put down, Katara has not been made fun of at all this entire season. I really liked Katara in season 1, but I positively despise her now.
