I don't see how she became a master. She became quite good, but not a master. The moves she used when fighting Zuko were not complex in any way... except for a few of 'em.

Beats me, ask Master Pakku and the Avatar creators why they had to make Katara a Waterbending Master.

What do you mean? WHEN was she dubbed a water-bending master??? I don't remember them calling her a master except for when Pakku says "call her Msater Katara" which doesn't count because there "master" means "master over Aang" not "master over waterbending"

Master Pakku in "Siege of the North Pole Part Two: then he better start calling you Master Katara.
Pakku was dubbing Katara a master. Not just to Aang, but as a Waterbending Master. Everyone else knows that Pakku named Katara a Waterbending Master then. But how he said it was referring to what Katara and Pakku were discussing.
Master Pakku: I've decided to go to the South Pole. Some other benders and healers want to join me. Its time we rebuild our sister tribe.
Katara: What about Aang? He still needs to learn Waterbending.
Master Pakku: Then he better get used to calling you Master Katara.
See, Pakku dubbed Katara a master while linking it into their conversation.

As I said before: In my opinion, that meant "master of Aang", not "master of waterbending".

But do you now think that Katara was named a Waterbending Master and not just Aang's Waterbending Master?

Personally I do not think that she is a waterbending master, nor does the show portray her as such, but perhaps I infer differently than the majority. Of course, I have high standards: I don't even think Toph is an earthbending master, whereas Bumi is.

Why then would a master waterbender who has been teaching others for years (Pakku) assign an average bender to teach the Avatar? Pakku most certainly dubbed her as a master, I have no doubt. But she is not a master waterbender, nor is Aang right now really. But the show for some reason wants to porray them as such. Nick's one commercial for TFOA even dubbed Aang an earthbending master after ONLY ONE DAY OF TRAINING! That's pretty sad. The show has itself said it takes years to become a master, so why have they jumped the gun with Katara?

That commercial bugged me. Technically, if that were true, Aang could face the fire lord right now:

    Air- fully mastered

Water- pretty good on, but not quite a master

    Earth- mastered enough for Nick

Fire- mastered enough for Nick, if he's master earthbending enough for Nick (the deserter)

Very true. Aang is now a fully realized Avatar ready to save the world by Nick's execs...he no longer needs the help of Avatar Roku and should be able to defeat Ozai with one hand tied behind his head.

    Eman5805 wrote:

Yeah, I guess. That's the only explanation I could come up with. The creators can't possibly say Aang is an earthbending master yet, it has to just be something a marketing exec came up with to make the movie look more interesting.

We don't know how the final battle is going to unfold. Aang may be helped by three other Benders of different elements in the end.

Remember, Pakku might have known that he would be travelling on boat with Katara for two/three weeks. (I forget the amount, it was said by Iroh in Chapter 21 when he mentioned sea vultures...) This is plenty of time for him to advise the way Katara will teach Aang and work on her skills further.

And don't forget during Chapter 30, Aang said "I train hard with Toph and Katara every day, I need a break" or something along those lines, so he didn't train for just one day. Don't get me wrong, I know he's no master, but he's been earthbending for about a week now I'd say.

Aang should defeat him alone, if Katara and Toph and Zuko, etc. are there that would make the final episode insanely stupid. It would defeat the entire purpose!

Sakura and Katara are kinda similar, but Sakura is more of a teenage girl that so many of us can empathize and sympathize with. I can't even find a reason to sympathize Katara, she's got the good life and hasn't gone through anything bad besides the death of her mother to feel bad for.

Well Sakura was made fun off that's nothing in a crying matter but Katara's life wasn't that great untill she met Aang so that statment isn't accurate sorry Phoenixfirework as for her power she isn't all that great Aang might of went down a few steps after he fooled around thinking he's to good for training Katara wasn't even that great against Pakke she didn't even land a single blow and he was going easy sshe's only training Aang for awhile without the develpment of her power.

Katara was specifically doing the BASICS that is needed to master bending just as iroh said "remember your basics prince Zuko". well? any commentS? i forgot some of what im gonna say...(er, type)

Uh, so she just cause Katara tried hard, she amazingly surpassed the superior bender Aang and became a master? Not a good defense, sorry.

that's EXACTLY why she passed up Aang...she trained and Aang did nothing but play with Momo or whatever other animals that were around...ya snooze ya lose...that's just the way it is...remember master pakku? "Raw talent alone is not enough." and then they show Aang, like usual, playing with Momo

so because aang didn't train as hard as katara she surpassed him, just because you work hard doesn't mean your going to be better then someone, ex. t.o. and randy moss barely practice at all, jerry porter practices way harder then randy moss all day and works out harder but is still not as good as randy moss, terry glen same thing as jerry porter, raw talent takes away from how much work you have to do to become good, aang picks it up in a second that means he doesn't have to work no where as hard as katara to become good at it, and i don't care who you think you are no one masters a bending in a week

I'm just saying that Katara was never bullied or anything. Despite what you think, bullying is bad. Katara didn't really live a bad life, but think about it, she's travelling with the Avatar, she's seeing the world, she's a Waterbending Master after about a week, and is now going to Ba Sing Se where she's going to live the sweet life and attend the king;s ball. She's got the good life, asides from her mother's death and father's departure, I see no reason to feel sorry for her.

Well Ba Sing Se isn't that great to be in cause she is going for a reason not play time. Toph is going as well so is life so sweet and master is just a rank she can't do every move she's just teaching Aang cause they left before Aang completed his training.
