In the ongoing YouTube-Viacom lawsuit saga Google says that Viacom is setting a terrible precedent in attempting to limit or restrict the way people share information via the internet.

    Here's the article: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080526/ap_on_hi_te/youtube_lawsuit

TOPIC RELEVANCE TO THE AVATAR FORUM PER THE TV.COM TOS: Dear Moderator~This topic is relevant to the Avatar forum because many, if not all of the Avatar episodes and even some fanvids were removed from YouTube at the onset of this copyright infringement lawsuit. Avatar fans, who make up the TV.com population of this forum, are heavily involved in the outcome of these legal proceeedings as Avatar episodes as well as their fan videos are directly affected by the end ruling. I would please ask that you not single my threads out for locking and/or deletion simply because of my counter-stance against your unjust banning of Nalesnik and SgtHydra. This topic is absolutely relevant per your own terms of use for this website. If you opt to lock and/or delete a viable thread you are doing nothing more but harassing me specifically. I would not recommend that as a wise choice. It should not be necessary for me or any other TV.com member to have to explain the relevance of a thread in proportion to the Avatar forum. You should be intelligent enough to ethically discern this for yourselves, but here we are, nevertheless.

    LOL AKB

It means that this court case is about to blow wide open to be much more than a mere legal brawl between Viacom and YouTube/Google.

Google is arguing to the court that Viacom's lawsuit is threatening the entire way the internet works. They are saying that Viacom doesn't have the right to police the internet and limit the way people share information, which is exactly what Google feels will happen if Viacom wins its suit.

Google is warning the court that if they side with Viacom they are opening up a terrific can of internet copyright witch-hunts. In their view it would be an insane ruling making it nearly impossible to enforce or police and extremely cumbersome for internet information-sharing sites, like YouTube.

Google is saying they have in good faith removed the obvious copyright infrigment materials, like Avatar and SpongeBob full-length episodes, but to attack the smaller fanvids with minor scenes is utterly ridiculous and pointless to pursue.

Viacom is not backing down saying, this is our stuff, we want every second of it accounted for and if someone uses it, they have to pay us for it. Remember that the current head honcho of Viacom, Philippe Dauman, is a lawyer by trade.

So this is huge news because the court ruling will be setting a precedent (a pattern or example for others to follow) which may cause incredible havoc on the internet, especially with information-sharing websites.

Does that make more sense? LOL

I really don't see Viacom's issue with things like fanvideos and such. Yes, they own it, whatever, but it's not hurting them. Are they really losing money from fanvideos?

They're not loosing money, but they're not gaining any either they would rather people pay for scenes to use or some BS like that.

I doubt this will go through. For one, the internet is TH primary media source of the entire world at this time, I believe. I.E. More people use the internet for things than the TV. Something like this would spark 'revolt' throughout the world, if you know what I mean. One company can't police almost all the video media of the internet.

he reminds me of bill gates when he wanted to own the internet and to charge everyone just to be on it. if viacom wins the people of the internet are going to fight against them.
