If they could just see one of the better fanvids or fanfics made...Nick would be so proud.

Btw, Paramount is owned by Viacom (in reference to the Star Trek thing some guy was talking about).

    LOL AKB

It means that this court case is about to blow wide open to be much more than a mere legal brawl between Viacom and YouTube/Google.

Google is arguing to the court that Viacom's lawsuit is threatening the entire way the internet works. They are saying that Viacom doesn't have the right to police the internet and limit the way people share information, which is exactly what Google feels will happen if Viacom wins its suit.

Google is warning the court that if they side with Viacom they are opening up a terrific can of internet copyright witch-hunts. In their view it would be an insane ruling making it nearly impossible to enforce or police and extremely cumbersome for internet information-sharing sites, like YouTube.

Google is saying they have in good faith removed the obvious copyright infrigment materials, like Avatar and SpongeBob full-length episodes, but to attack the smaller fanvids with minor scenes is utterly ridiculous and pointless to pursue.

Viacom is not backing down saying, this is our stuff, we want every second of it accounted for and if someone uses it, they have to pay us for it. Remember that the current head honcho of Viacom, Philippe Dauman, is a lawyer by trade.

So this is huge news because the court ruling will be setting a precedent (a pattern or example for others to follow) which may cause incredible havoc on the internet, especially with information-sharing websites.

Does that make more sense? LOL

I think he wanted less words

I hadn't thought about it before, but Viacom is only attacking YouTube, and I rarely use that anymore anyway because of the restrictions.
True. I can already think of five or six other viewing websites. By the time viacom's done trying to sue them all they'll be outta cash from paying the lawyers. Remember, back in the day sueing was done when you acctually were indignenet with someone(Ah! the days of "cease and desist letters"), nowadays people sue for a living. these people aren't sueing google so they can stop all trafficing of their work, they are doing it to make a buck.

Sometimes I want to club the lawyers who encourage this "sue, sue, sue!!" behavior. I'm interested in law, but to actually help people.
It isn't all lawyers fault (Defending my copyright class teacher because she's a lawyer and she is awsome) People are just all aware of the fact that if you find something wrong with someone even if it isn't hurting much, you can squeeze money out of it. Oy, some of the stories If heard of nutty clients...

I agree... it's only a handful of people who make lawyers look bad.

    Sigh, I need a cookie.
Here, have some of my gold-plated one.

Oh thanks! It will go well with my chocolate one.

Viacom demanded the immediate removal of all the fan videos, full-length episodes and whatnot of shows that it owns. YouTube complied. So then, all the uploaders of the banned material just moved to other websites, where their work is still proudly on display. Moral of the short story? Viacom are idiots.

Personally, fanvids, fanart and fanfics are all ways to express how much we enjoy Avatar and a way to increase whatever talents we may want to develop. There are some truly amazing artists on DA, some excellent writers on fanfiction.net and generally awesome...people who make fanvids. Yeah, I don't know what the name is for them. But still, Viacom shouldn't punish people by removing their creativity just because those people have used three minutes worth of material that, let's face it, viewers wouldn't be able to figure out the story from anyway. If anything, fanvids increase the shows popularity: I sent a fanvid with a great song on it to a friend, now he watches Avatar too. The Internet is a free place where people can express themselves in various different ways and with Viacom becoming the Hitler/Stalin/Mussolini (I have a history exam in a couple of weeks, give me a break ) of the worldwide web, more people will realize what's going on and start to fight back.

I absolutely agree. What is Viacom trying to tell the fans? Do not express yourself and your creativity? The fact is that if a random person stumbles upon a fanvid and enjoys it, chances are they will want to see the actual show. Do you want that means? Instant and FREE advertising. Promotion of avatar and it doesn't cost a dime. Viacom should encourage people to show their creativity and love for the show. Hey look at it this way, better if people are doing something clean and friendly than doing something bad, or illegal. God knows there is enough bad influences in the world. Censorship of the fanvids isn't really helping that situation.

Since when is a facepalm a guy thing? Facepalming is a timeless classic technique to express the otherwise unexpressable feelings of rage, hatred, or simply to express how stupid something is.

Facepalms can be enjoyed by girls and boys. Katara does it too y'know.
