Per the topic: I would agree with many of the posts offered in this thread but most of I agree with the point that all YouTube fanvids do is PROMOTE Avatar, not draw monies away from it.

    Surprised?

Okay, it's time for tomtitan to go against the mainstream view! Yaaay! (well, kinda)

We're all complaining that if Viacom gets their way abridged series, fanvids etc. are all finished. But we forget that Viacom has had their way for a very long time. Viacom has repeatedly removed fanvids, full-length episodes etc. in the past and we've complained about it. The only difference this time is that Google (owners of YouTube) have had the chutzpah to stand up to the 'Viacom Gods'.

But there's still no need for panic. Why? Because, no matter how hard you try, you can't stop teh interwebz.

The internet is like a huge force, a giant tidal wave of information, no one company can control it. No one company can even influence it that much. The internet is an extremely powerful force. The only people who can even hope to control it are those who use their powers for the freedom of information, not those who try to contain it. The only people who can control the internet are people like Anonymous. Anonymous has the power on the World Wide Web. Why? Because they allow the internet to do what it's supposed to, relay information.

Like rock and roll, you can't stop the internet.

If Viacom pulls episodes off YouTube, we'll just upload them to Livevideo, or veoh, or even EmoSpaceTV, we'll just seed torrents, we'll just download them.

If Viacom tries to stop teh interwebz, teh interwebz will fight back. And teh interwebz will win.

You can't fight the people of the internet, on the internet. That's like Zuko trying to fight Katara in the middle of the ocean under a full moon. There's not a chance of Zuko winning. It's impossible.

No matter how hard Viacom tries, they will never stop information from flowing. They'd have better luck stopping high tide.

Your news is almost always bad these days. Even though there's no way in hell Viacom should win this suit, the news is not pleasant. The mere thought of having our freedoms taken away disturbs me.

Viacom demanded the immediate removal of all the fan videos, full-length episodes and whatnot of shows that it owns. YouTube complied. So then, all the uploaders of the banned material just moved to other websites, where their work is still proudly on display. Moral of the short story? Viacom are idiots.

Personally, fanvids, fanart and fanfics are all ways to express how much we enjoy Avatar and a way to increase whatever talents we may want to develop. There are some truly amazing artists on DA, some excellent writers on fanfiction.net and generally awesome...people who make fanvids. Yeah, I don't know what the name is for them. But still, Viacom shouldn't punish people by removing their creativity just because those people have used three minutes worth of material that, let's face it, viewers wouldn't be able to figure out the story from anyway. If anything, fanvids increase the shows popularity: I sent a fanvid with a great song on it to a friend, now he watches Avatar too. The Internet is a free place where people can express themselves in various different ways and with Viacom becoming the Hitler/Stalin/Mussolini (I have a history exam in a couple of weeks, give me a break ) of the worldwide web, more people will realize what's going on and start to fight back.

Viacom has the worst business strategy ever.

Imagine if Google and Viacom settled, agreeing that any money made off of ads pertaining to copyrighted material would go towards the owner of the copyright, its a done and done deal.

If it set up a Youtube channel, filled it with Nick, MTV, etc content, all it would have to do is wait for the advertising dollars to roll in.

Plus, all the AMVs serve as free ads for nick.

Look guys, Lisa's threads may not always be the most enjoyable but they are the most informative. Leave it to Lisa to find the latest in Avatar related news.

I sure hope Viacom realizes they need to stop attacking their fandom on Youtube. They should know from experience, that its better to embrace the wave of the future then to go against it.

    Tomtitan has a point.

I hadn't thought about it before, but Viacom is only attacking YouTube, and I rarely use that anymore anyway because of the restrictions.

True. I can already think of five or six other viewing websites. By the time viacom's done trying to sue them all they'll be outta cash from paying the lawyers. Remember, back in the day sueing was done when you acctually were indignenet with someone(Ah! the days of "cease and desist letters"), nowadays people sue for a living. these people aren't sueing google so they can stop all trafficing of their work, they are doing it to make a buck.

It isn't all lawyers fault (Defending my copyright class teacher because she's a lawyer and she is awsome) People are just all aware of the fact that if you find something wrong with someone even if it isn't hurting much, you can squeeze money out of it.
