Well ok, but you still gotta admit that Katara and Sokka shouldn't be portrayed by white kids. I mean where's the authenticity.

If you wanted authenticity, then you would have to cast two teenage Eskimos as Sokka and Katara. To be forthright, I assume there are few Eskimo actors, especially teenage Eskimo actors. It would be no more authentic to have black actors portray Sokka and Katara than white actors. In my opinion, even though Avatar borrowed ideas from various cultures, it did not borrow the concept of race. The world of Avatar is populated by people of various skin tones, and the cast should reflect this...and it does.

I wish more people would see it like this. But since this is the topic that just won't die... I've always imagined that bi-racial black/white would have been the closest physical match. And actually, the only characters that don't strike me as having a mutiple race heritage are Toph, who to me looks East Asian and Suki and Ty Lee, who to me look white. Everyone else seems to have been designed with some combinations of races, which fit with one of the biggest themes being that the world, including it's people, is all interconected, so I've always though of it that way. I am a little disapointed that they don't look more like the characters, but really, who actually cared about race during the series? Avatar is great because the story and the development of the charaters is amazing. The biggest thing that could go wrong in transfering it to film would be failing to preserve the depth and complexity of the characters. If their concern over what their actors looked like took priority over the ability to portray their charater this entire film would be doomed. Of course, this film might be doomed for other reasons, in which case you might as well just hire whoever looked best, lol. I don't want to seem unsensitive to the complaint of white-washing, because it has certainly been a very real problem before, but we already have a racially diverse cast which will only get more diverse as the characters from book 2 and 3 join the cast.

Well, I'm sure they'll put some makeup on him to appear older and give him a fake beard. Its just like the guy playing Iroh-Shawn Toub doesn't necessarily look like him either, but they'll probably do some work to make him look like Iroh, like putting him in a fat suit and having him grow a beard or something.

I saw the promo during Transformers 2 (which was too long for me...just an opinion...) and was like...what? It just looks soo bad, I'm waiting for the same film company to butcher TDI or Danny Phantom next year...

Yeah, what's up with the characters races? "Katara" and "Sokka" need to get some serious tanning in before shooting

    It just looks bad...

It's been well over a year since I last posted here. O.o

With the technology out there today, I'm sure they can easily make the actors appear close to those on the show. I still agree that they should have tried harder for closer resemblances, but all the same, real life people hardly ever resemble anime characters.

I'm surprised some people are still complaining about how the actors don't look like the race their characters were supposedly were in the show. I'd start caring about whether or not these guys can act.

I am wondering if the CGI and other special effects are going to be any good.

I agree, that's sort of what I was trying to say. BTW welcome back, even though I don't think I've met you. I'm Allie, nice to meet you.

Yeah, I don't recognize any of the current posters. It seemed like once the series ended, they all either stopped coming here or jumped on a different show's forum. I'll be popping in every once and awhile, checking for movie updates and such; the days of the intense ATLA shipping wars have died and I can't help but feel a little saddened but also at peace that they're over.

Hey Allie, you can just call me Valin if you'd like.
