    Although they never called it that, you could say that spiritbending is similar to Quintessence. It is bending the energy within another, after all.

    Well, water, earth, fire, and air were the main classical elements which reigned supreme and were most accepted by society, if my knowledge serves correctly. Quintessance or Aether was more of the unknown element, with mystical powers and abilities.

    I believe the creators added the lightning to Firebenders since fire is manifestation of pure energy. Who knows how Avatar would turn out with things coming to life!
