By the anthropology perspective, Toph could be considered an adult if we know what the marriage age is. In that same light, Katara could be an adult. If we assume Yue was the same age as Katara, they would be considered adults since Yue was betrothed. A little over 100 years ago, it was perfectly acceptable for a man nearing 30 to marry a 12-year-old girl. Expected really. Edgar Allan Poe lived during such a time.
    a) again, asian influenced american show. despite the setting, the tone of the show is ENTIRELY modern.

b)again, toph is a child. not because of her age, but because of her social role as a character.

An in a modern American society, I believe it is not seen as taboo for a 16-year-old guy to date a 13-year-old girl.
12 and 15 is not 13 and 16 age gaps mean more the younger you are.

also, i don't think sokka and toph are anywhere near each other in terms of maturity. despite being a great bender, toph is a CHILD who ran away from home. and despite being the comic relief guy, sokka is just about a grown man.

Yet, you don't take into account any of the maturity she has as a master bender. Nor the maturity shown in the adventures seen so far. Just because she is a child physically, does not mean she is totally one mentally. She is immature at times, but she has also shown wisdom. My friend's son makes sure to wake his dad up at exactly 7:45 to take him to the bus stop for school. That's a level of maturity many people would not expect of a 7-year-old. I've known adults that still act half their age. Aside from this, developmental studies show men and women do not achieve mental, emotional, and physical adult levels until about 25.

That's how Tokka basically started. How could we tokka fans forget that? But...Sokka's Master and The Puppetmaster totally gave it away that it might canon.

yet again, when i say toph's a child i'm NOT REFFERING TO AGE. my age references are not about maturity, they're about the way relationships are viewed by the public.

so a 7 year old can get up on time. so what? he's still a child, just a child with a routine. there's nothing "mature" about being conditioned into a set routine.

so toph's an insanely talented earthbending prodigy. that doesn't mean she's not a child. she may be wise for her age, but again, wisdom is not maturity. it's certainly correlated to maturity, but no correlation is absolute.

and your stats are a bit off. physical maturity comes years before mental and emotional maturity.

According to DVD commentary of Serpent's Pass, it seems to be cannon. When Toph saved Sokka from the land slide and when she kisses Suki. Specifically, the landslide. I'd have to go back for exact wording.

One of them hinted, saying, "So...maybe a little shipping? Hmm?"

    I freaked.

Ok I've seen many people bring up that toph isn't Mature enought for a relationship and that matured comes from age and knowledge. But there is something you all are forget that also effects maturity. Exspiriance.

Thought out life our Exspirances help us mature. I'd say that going off to help save to world with the Avatar would provide many many MANY expirances for Toph to grow more and more mature. Finally having real friend is one. Fighting the Di Lee and Azula's bunch. Teaching Aang, Saving Ba Sin Sa, and having been hunted and captured by Bounty Hunter that her parents have hired have all contribued to her growth in matured.

Now I'm not saying that Toph is the most Mature person in the Group, but I'm am saying that she's more mature than her age lets on.

right.....because fighting and relationships are pretty much the same thing, right?

you're right, experience really is the main factor in maturity, not age. but toph's entire life before joining aang consisted of an extremely sheltered life at home and running around on stage as the blind bandit. there was no experience in interpersonal relatiohships. she didn't have friends, she didn't even have a close relationship with her own parents.

that's kinda my point. a relationship between a child with no social interaction experience or skill and a young man who's already in a relationship just couldn't work.

although to be quite honest, the fact that sokka's already in a relationship should be more than enough.
