Is it just me, or are all the Zutara shippers people who like Zuko better than Aang? And are all the Kataangers people who like Aang better than Zuko? Not only does this match with what several Zutarians and Kataangers have said on the subject, but it also makes sense - it is only natural that people will think that the romance involving the character they prefer is the better, more likely one - as the old saying goes: "People see what they want to see".

So let's do a quick round off with who you like better as a character - Zuko or Aang, and which ship you like better - Kataang or Zutara.

I'll go first. I like Aang's character better. Zuko's story was great, and I love his character, but just not as much as I like Aang's.

So far, the theory is holding out then.

I do like Aang much better. I enjoy his innocence, especially in the first season. It's very refreshing to watch someone to blissfully ignorant. Zuko is too dark and depressing. Aang is free of prejudice. I mean, he even stood up to Pipsqueak in "Jet". Pipsqueak was all, "You think my name is funny?!" and Aang says "YEAH!" without even noticing Pipsqueak's size. I just love the fact that he's so light and carefree.

lol Ax your wrote this theory on discussion 4 thread, and i don't feel like retyping my response.

But i want to know why all Kataangers think that Zuko is this dark depressed charater. He's deep yeah, but he's got a lot more baggage than Aang. Some bad blood and dirty laundry.

Aang is a kid. He uses all that happiness and go lucky as a way to distract himself from the heaviness of his importance. Not saying it's a bad thing, just saying.

I wrote the theory on both threads because I know that some shippers prefer to use only one thread, and with so few passionate shippers left I wanted to get all of them.

People think that Zuko is dark and depressed becuase he is - you cannot deny it in Seasons 1 and 2. It's why he and Maiko are such a good match. Even after his redemption he remains beyond doubt the darkest member of the gaang. Does this mean that we don't like him? Heck, no! For me Zuko draws in at #4 favorite character (Azula is first, then Aang, then Iroh). He is the most developed character in the series - rivalled only by Aang. We just like Aang's character more, and hence are Kataang shippers.

When all is said and done, shipping is mainly about preferences. For all our long posts about things like compatibility and opposites attracting, at heart we ship simply becuase we made a sub-conscious decision about which ship we like better, plain and simple. You can look as hard as you want, but you will never find a Kataanger who shipsonly because they think it would make more sense story-wise.

We'll see what sort of results this draws before we say whether my theory is correct or inncorrect.

To be honest, I really don't like Katara. But since Aang likes her, it's okay. I want him to be happy

i disagree that it's a subconcious decision. lol i did debate it in my head, but i just ended up perfering zutara.

And yeah Zuko's pretty dark in the first season, mostly because we as viewers don't understand him yet though. In the 2nd season is when you were able to start seeing past that.

for me, it was just the fact that i though zutara looked good together, and as i watched, i built sort of a "zutara foundation'. all of the whole similarities and moments kina were built up from that.

He absolutely was not good in Season 2. Although he was changing, if given the opportunity he would've, and had, captured the Avatar. Out of sight out of mind came into play in Season 2. But once Aang presented himself, Zuko was just as cynical as in Season 1.

well at least when the avatar was gone, he didn't really think about him. in the first season, all he thought about was him.

It was very, very hard for Zuko to ignore the lure of capturing the Avatar. Zuko has always put Iroh before the Avatar (except in CoD). In one of the season 1 episodes, Iroh is captured by earth benders and Zuko either has to chose to rescue Iroh or follow the Avatar. He picks Iroh, which I was surprised about. Once Iroh successfully got Zuko separated from the Avatar, it was time to start showing him there were other things to life besides trying to regain your "honor". I think Zuko, although he never really admitted it, always trusted Iroh. Anger was the reason why Zuko sometimes lashed out at Iroh and called him a traitor and such. So, because of Iroh, Zuko became somewhat of a better person. But it was all an illusion. Nothing really changed. Only when Zuko experienced his new life first hand did he realize that it wasn't what he wanted. Iroh, in the end, never really did much. Of course, he spoke words, but they had no meaning to Zuko. In Season 3, Zuko could finally make sense of them. In the first and second season, Iroh did nothing. Zuko hadn't changed at all. It just seemed like he did.
