It was very, very hard for Zuko to ignore the lure of capturing the Avatar. Zuko has always put Iroh before the Avatar (except in CoD). In one of the season 1 episodes, Iroh is captured by earth benders and Zuko either has to chose to rescue Iroh or follow the Avatar. He picks Iroh, which I was surprised about. Once Iroh successfully got Zuko separated from the Avatar, it was time to start showing him there were other things to life besides trying to regain your "honor". I think Zuko, although he never really admitted it, always trusted Iroh. Anger was the reason why Zuko sometimes lashed out at Iroh and called him a traitor and such. So, because of Iroh, Zuko became somewhat of a better person. But it was all an illusion. Nothing really changed. Only when Zuko experienced his new life first hand did he realize that it wasn't what he wanted. Iroh, in the end, never really did much. Of course, he spoke words, but they had no meaning to Zuko. In Season 3, Zuko could finally make sense of them. In the first and second season, Iroh did nothing. Zuko hadn't changed at all. It just seemed like he did. |
so basically, zuko's more compassionate side in the second season were all lies brought on by bryke, and iroh has no purpose in the show.
