I leave this place for a few hours and find that my war mongering has managed to reignite the shipping wars. Cool. I know it's kind of late, but to whoever said that they think that Zuko and Katara have more in common than are opposites, I would like to point out that Mai and Zuko are far more compatible than Zuko and Katara. |
*raises hand* i said that, and i have to disagree. |
They both lost their mothers, and that's about it. A couple of the more crazy Zutarians now like to refer to the Southern Raiders, but that episode aside, Zuko and Katara's characters are polar opposites. |
okay, here goes. u mentioned the mother thing, right, okay. both haven't met their fathers for many years, and they both really missed him. even though zuko didn't turn good until the end, both of them have a drive to help save the world, and they gave up almost everything for it. both of them r stubborn, and they let their emotions go a little crazy at time. both of them struggled with their bending. katara had trouble because she was forbidden from learning, but fierce determination made her a master. zuko had really no particular talent in the beginning with firebending. but his persistence made him good enough to teach aang firebending, and defeat azula. both of them have sort of a good and bad side. the good side is filled with compassion and kindness. the bad side is of jealousy and rage. if the two of them have gotten together, they would start at a common ground where they understand each other, and as things develop, it would grow into a more deep and (bear with me) structured relationship. |
The fathers thing is fairly different. Ozai and Hakkoda were set up in The Awakening as foils for eachother; the two had very different issues with their children. It should be remembered that Mai also had difficult relations with her parents. Most of the main characters have a drive to save the world and gave up almost everything for it, Aang for instance. And Katara didn't struggle with her bending. Her only problem was finding a teacher. Once Pakku accepted her as a student she advanced through the levels far faster than any student he had ever taught. In that regard she parallels Azula far more than Zuko. As for the good side/bad side, that doesn't really hold up. The only episode where we saw anything approaching a bad side in Katara was TSR, and that had to be provoked by the man who had killed her mother, and even then she held back (when Zuko was obviously willing to do it, incidently). So Katara is completely dominated by her "good side". As for Zuko, iit's not exactly a "bad side", but it is certainly a much more ruthless one than Katara's that dominates him. So apart from occaisonal slips, the two are completely dominated by two different opposing character aspects. If thhe two had gotten together, the simple fact is that they would most likely have clashed on almost all issues. So basically, the only part of your argument that holds up is the part about how they both sometimes lose their tempers. Katara loses her temper far less easily than Zuko, and in any case, the shared trait of easily losing your temper does not strike me as something that is going to start a relationship and keep it working (quite the opposite actually). This is really fun |
as far as katara's struggling, she had the talent, but no teacher, so she taught herself in the first season. the fathers thing was mentioned because regardless of the different issues, zuko and katara both missed him. aang lost a lot, his drive for saving the world is sometime fogged up because of fear. the good/bad side thing was mentioned because well, they have both sides. u're right about how one side dominates the other, but they HAVE both sides. i met this one married couple where the man was a little hot headed, but he also had the compassionate side of him. the woman was more compassionate than hot headed. if the man was all hot headed and the woman was all compassionate, then things couldn't work out, but since there is a little of the other side, they were able to compliment each other in a way where the man became more friendly and the woman became more opinionated to speak her mind. |
Actually, I maintain that the fathers issue was quite different. Zuko wanted to be loved and accepted by his father, and when they met again, recieved neither. Katara knew that her father loved her and accepted her, her problem with him was that she was angry at him for leaving them behind. If episodes 301 - 309 are any indication of what things were like prior to his banishing Zuko did not see a lot of his father. He didn't mind that though; simply wanting the love. The example you mentioned sounds like the two are somewhat moderatly different; I maintain that Zuko and Katara are still complete opposites who would clash on almost everything. |
