Here's two situations which are reasonable to what happened:

1.) He DID die when struck by lightning. Ok people, there was a hole through his body, I mean the whole electricity/lightning going through all of his body must have??knocked out his heart or something. Its almost impossible to survive that. It went right through him and proabably stopped his heart and brain. And his BigMe Aang version started to loose its glow and just fell over. And Azula's smile, she shot to kill, KILL, she didn;t want to just hurt him a little, she had a job to do, and she had a perfect oppurtunity to not only kill the current avatar but stop anymore from coming so as the fire nation could finally claim victory. She is the last person to pass this??golden oppurtunity up, she wanted to kill and smiled becuase she did??so. BUT, when Katara brought him back to life, his avatar powers/spirit came back as well, hence the glow. "The glow is the combination of all your past lives focusing their energy through your body." So all the past avatar are "alive" and kicking and still with aang. There's a reason why avatar roku stressed the death in the avatar state speech, and that's why they put it in the "previously on avatar" thing. Why do you think Katara cried when she didn't think the spirit oasis water worked? She thought her best friend and possible love had just DIED, not just mortally wounded. This is the most likely case.??

2.) He was on death's doorstep and didn't loose his powers and katara just sort of saved him from death. He still has all his powers and connections to the past avatars and such.

I think it was the 2nd one.

Possible, but seriously, the creaotrs/writers really stressed the whole "death in the avatar state" thing, it wasn't for naught. I'm not saying that Aang couldn't have survived, but, well, here I'm going out side and getting struck??by lightning, so as it goes all throughout me and makes a hole or two in my body, and we'll see if I'm alive...

Ok, hear me out on this:

So, Azula shot Aang down with lightning and smiled. She isn't stupid and she's damn good with her lighting, so I think she knows when she??achieved her target. She wanted to KILL him, not hurt, kill. She knew she could kill two birds with one stone (no more current avatar and no more avatars period) by killing Aang. She wasn't going to take the chance of him living, so why wouldn't she have just beat the crap out of him after she struck him with lighting? Oh right, cause he's dead. She also did have time to beat more crap out of him, so yea.

But if Aang didn't die then why did the animators feel the need to show the clip, in the prologue,??when Avatar Roku said "If you are killed in the Avatar state, then the reincarnation cycle is broken....."? you get the rest. Well I think there is a reason why this was shown, like all the other prologues.

because that's what the creators of this show are best at doing... keeping interest generated in their show WAY after the show is over... think about it, new season doesn't start until April 2007

Also they were reminding us (as well as showing others who may not have seen the 1st season) the consequences of what would happen if he was killed in the Avatar state, that doesn't necessarily mean they were gonna kill him and have him resurrected. (c'mon guys he was DYING not dead... don't you think Sokka and Toph would be a little bit more 'emotional' if they thought Aang was a dead, instead they were just looking kinda MAJORLY concerned - kinda like the look of 'is he gonna die?') Especially considering the outcome if he was dead.. okay, all hope is lost in the world and we're all goners - Aang will no longer be able to 'save the world'.

And actually, they did leave us with a somewhat cliffhanger... is Aang and the Avatar state really going to be okay? so I would say they did they're job just right...

EDIT: umm... also remember these are the same creators that provided a 'clip' of Katara and Zuko in a came in a (would could have been) a 'scar healing moment'.... yeah they know what they got and flaunt it to the fullest....

ohh... let's not forget those other cliffhangers....

Was Zuko changed or wasn't he??? (Katara, "I thought you had changed"; Zuko "I have")

Is Azula playing Zuko or is Zuko playing Azula (ummm... just how can Azula guarantee that her father will welcome Zuko back 'with love')

What has happened to Iroh and where is he now?

Are the Kyoshi warriors alive... (Ty Lee said they 'beat the kyoshi warriors and took their clothes'... not killed the kyoshi warriors)

What happened to Jet, Smellerbee and Longshot when the Lake Laogai prison disappeared/destroyed?

... and I'm sure there are many UNANSWERED questions out there that have not??been??answered...

Well Aang obviously did not die because he was hugging Katara at the end. If he DID die and was brought back to life, then there are lots of possibilities which I stated in the beginning of this thread. If Aang didn't die, then everything is probably normal. However, thanks to Kataang4eva I believe that Aang didn die but has his powers, but we'll find out in Season 3.

Yea, this isn't going to be left untouched. Maybe, if he did die, they group will be all, "So how was it being dead? What went on? did you see a light?"??I dunno, let the long wait for answers begin.

In your first theory you said that Aang did die, which I believe too, but since he died shouldn't the Avatar Cycle be broken? He??was brought back??to life with his tattoos glowing (which shows that the Avatars are with him) but does that mean that Avatar Roku was lying that if you die in the Avatar State the Avatars will cease to exist?

probably not lying, but i am wondering if roku revealed the whole truth to aang when he spoke to him, he has to figure some things out on his own.

How would it help Aang to find out about the Avatar State by himself? In the first season he didn't even know what it was.??Roku doesn't seem to be lying but I think you're right that he left a big detail out.

Is it just me, or did the wound on Aang's back look a lot like Zuko's scar? Just fresh, if you will. Also, IT DID NOT GO ALL THE WAY THROUGH!!! The front of his outfit had no marks on it at all. Azula needed to capture the Avatar, not kill him because they will have to start the search over (and who knows how old you have to be before your reincarnation is recognized as such). Who would have told her that killing the Avatar in the A. State ends the cycle?

I don't think that Aang was dead from Azula's attack. I think that he was unconcious from the attack and was dying until Katara used the oasis water to heal him to regain conciousness.

I was thinking that Aang did die, but the more I think about it, the more I think that he didn't. Anyway I hate to break it to everyone, but if Aang is truly the last Airbender, the Avatar Cycle is already broken cause if Aang dies, the next Avatar will be a Waterbender, and after that Avatar is an Earthbender, then a Firebender, then What? No More Airbenders means no more Avatar. I don't think it'll just skip Air, and go back to Water.
