I like Zutara, I like Kataang.

I just wished they'd made more of a background story for Maiko, then, who knows, I may even have liked that too! I would've liked to see more of Mai's personality through the show to see why it was that Zuko liked her. She didn't really seem to show any type of affection for anything until she started going out with Zuko, which I found a little odd.

They just seem to have Mai show up at the end randomly after not being mentioned at all for about six episodes.

That was one of my biggest beefs with Maiko, the fact that virtually out of nowhere she and Zuko are going out and kissing, I mean a little build-up would have made the couple a little more palatable, not much at all, but at least it is something. I mean I understand that she used to have a crush on Zuko, as revealed by Azula if I am not mistaken, but with the way they threw Maiko together they could have done Zutara just as easily, and it certainly would have made a lot more people happy, honestly, anyone who actually feels for Maiko is more of a fan of cold, depressing, unimaginative, and all-around un-appealing characters than I. Oh, and the fact that she had a crush on Zuko when she was younger, sweet, but irrelevant.

I agree that there were slight hints towards Zutara - but only in the very last episodes. However, I don't agree that Nick should've just left it alone and gone with Kataang down the line. There needed to be some Zuko-Katara interaction, and the close friendship they established was good character development and added an extra dimension - it also suggested possibility for relationship without actually substantiating it firmly. Even if it "led on Zutarians", it created another layer of suspense for the story beyond simply "FIGHT THE FIRE NATION x 100000000." Aang and Katara were always going to end up together and it's good that they did. Similarly, after Mai sacrificed herself for Zuko, it was impossible that they wouldn't get together. I wish there had been a little epilogue at the end of the episode to show us where everything went in 10 years time after the kiss (cliche, i know, but as if the kiss wasn't a cliche in itself!!) There were still so many things I wanted answered!!!

Good point, I kinda wanted the same thing, and yet kinda did not. I guess if I do not see how everything went 10 years down the line, then I can make up the future as I wish it would unfold. I appreciate Mai's "sacrifice" and all, it was dangerous to challenge Azula to be sure, but I mean Zuko saves Katara, and then saves him, I mean COME ON PEOPLE, THE PERFECT PAIR RIGHT THERE!!

The problem was that most people in the beginning knew that it was going to be an aang x katara ship, but nick just kept leading us on and on...it gave many many reasons for a zuko x katara ship, which the SHOULDN'T have done. I mean really, watch the last 6 episodes and tell me that there wasn't a good chance for a zuko x katara ship, nick should've ignored it.....instead they led alot of fans on a hiking trip up to a dead end cliff.

to tell you the truth i thought hat the whole finale was amaing, except like the last 50 or so minutes. the ending was very cliche and thats why i wanted zutara but it was still an excellent way to finish of the series

The bolded statement is true. However, (maybe I'm just weird) but I liked the fact that she didn't show many emotions until she got together with Zuzu. I mean, it's kind of like Wuthering Heights where the people themselves may not have that great of a character, but their redeeming quality is their love... (oh gawd, that sounded SO cheesy!)

The only problem I ever had with Zutara is that it firmly denied any root in logic. It is a fan pairing, which is cool , but any argument for it canonity seriously had me rolling my eyes. If you still don't think that Kataang was always intended, then you are to far in denile to help.

As loathsome as it is for a Zutara fan to say, I must agree, logically, or at least based on the evidence we were given, it is tough to sell Zutara from the whole series, though within the last 5 or so episodes and the movie it is easier. I think they could have canonically made Zutara, but of course that would have required actual establishing throughout the whole series, or at least more than a smattering of moments through seasons 1,2, and half of 3. In the caves of Ba Sing Se is probably where I first was able to justify a Zutara ending somewhere, as it seemed like maybe if Aang and Iroh had not showed up she would have healed Zuko, they would have shared a special moment, and Zuko might not have betrayed them, but if he did then Katara would not have had anything to with which to heal Aang. The writers may have put them together, but Maiko is the couple that makes the least sense in the end, and that is not my opinion because I am a disheartened Zutara fan, but I am to be honest...obviously!

Since the beginning, I liked Zutara (or maybe it was just Zuko lol), and ever since this season I started to like Maiko. I don't know why, but I usually hate cannon pairings because they are just too obvious. And since I have a big imangination, I supported Ty Lokka (which I knew was never going to happen, but it seemed funny enough) and Taang (because that would have been pretty funny too). As a Zutara shipper, I don't mind that Kataang won because it is pretty cute

    Kataang all the way!
    Zutara would never fit together!
    I'm glad Kataang did

From your post I could tell even before I saw your sig that you read Twilight.

In the second all Avatar magizine by Nickelodeon, it has a comic with Mai and Zuko's first date which was set up by Azula. Personally I was able to stand Maiko much more after reading it.

Just because it would have made more people happy, Zutara should have happened instead of Maiko? And please, don't insult the Maiko people, they have the right to ship just as much as anyone else.

Re the bold bit in the last post: XD same. I recognized the description of Wuthering Heights (which I still have yet to actually read ... but still, Breaking Dawn is coming out soon! )

I've seen that comic - I have the magazine, I read it again before watching the finale - and that was all very well and good, but to me it still didn't really give any credibility to Maiko as a ship. They were talking and suddenly they kissed. As far as a canon ship goes, it was surprisingly random.

Of course people are free to like what ever couples they want to, I am only saying that Maiko would have made more sense if they had established it more, and if Mai was a more appealing character than Katara, which I felt she was not. I was never that big of a fan of Mai or really even Ty Lee, they were good enough as characters, but whether they got to be part of a pairing at the end was not important, they just did not reach that first echelon of characters. I guess though since Katara was going to end up with Aang they had to get Zuko with someone, and conversely since they removed Zuko from the running for Katara, the only logical choice was Aang, either way they were covered. In any case the only relationship I would not mind seeing continue would be Sokka and Suki, I have no ill feelings towards either of them.

As long as people support non-cannon relationships, even thought the series ended, this board will stay alive.
