I say Katara because in CoD, Katara was actually beating Azula and would have won if Zuko did not interfere. And obviously, neither of them had their bending modified by other forces such as the comet or full moon.

I change my mind... I'm going to go with Katara now, after hearing what you people had to say. I still think that Azula would win (confusing) but I agree with the fact that Katara only outsmarted Azula, which is still a reward in itself.

well actually now that katara can just pull water out of thin air it wouldnt really matter if there was a large body of water near by

Actually Bigberry is right, Katara did have the upper hand over Azula in the short fight in CoD before Zuko took over the fight with Katara and Azula went after Aang.

Depends Azula was a well-trained girl maybe on daylight but Katara on nightfall who knows?
Anyway i like Azula better but... i personally think that it wont matter day or night "the faster and smart" its gonna be the winner

It all depends about what time they are fighting and by time I mean time in the seasons. 1, 2, or 3.

Right now (end of season 3), if Katara and Azula began fighting in an equal environment without any bonuses or curses towards their bending, Katara would win.

Azula may be crazy powerful when insane, but Katara has the sane mind. Insanity boggles the mind going in and out, not allowing the person to think or act clearly. It's like you're drunk in a way. You're not really in control, you're messed up head is.

Now at the end of season 2 when Azula and Katara were fighting, Katara was winning and would have won if Zuko hadn't interfered. This was a great example of an equal battle because they were underground. The sun nor the moon could reach either of them, which brings up the question: Does a bender have to be able to see the moon/sun in order to become stronger in their bending abilities, for as long as they're in the line of sight?

For this situation I am going to say Yes. Both were on level ground and both had unlimited access to their elements. There was a large river filled with water for Katara and plenty of oxygen in the cave for Azula to create fire. The arena was huge (on all three axises; x, y, and z) and had lots of large pillars and crystals for cover.

Now, when They were fighting Katara was a lot more emotional or in other words she was a lot more P.O'd. You can tell by the look on her face. She had the look of: "I'm going to F****** kick your A**!!!" and you could tell that Azula was beginning to get scared. Like the slow-mo hair chop off sequence. She was finally realizing: "Hey, I might get my A** handed to me this time." And again when Katara had both of Azula's limbs, Azula was getting worried and who knows what Katara would have done with her if Zuko hadn't severed Katara's hold on her.

Season 1: Azula would win
Season 2: Katara would win Season 3: Well although Katara did defeat her that was only because she out smarted her, so in season 3 with the comet i think Azula would win because of the comet's powers

I think Katara would definitely beat Azula. She can draw water out of thin air, and, like someone else said, Katara totally would have defeated Azula at the end of season 2 if Zuko hadn't interfered.

I discount Sozin's Comet as Azula was in the grip of complete insanity at the time (there were more than a couple of opportunities for her to take Katara down that she badly neglected, as well as a whole other host of thing that I could expand on endlessly).
