He goed my (weak) explenation: Aang was happy because she now sees him not as a goofy kid, but as a serious guy.
Katara was sad because she knew he was right, her faith in him doesn't help him in his duty.

i dont see her being sad. maybe because Aang was going to fight his strongest enemy. but after the kiss (right now) she was on cloud nine.

Yeah, that's what I meant.. She always had faith in him, sometimes she was the onlyone, and when he said "What if I don't come back?" she knew he was right, she knew her faith wouldn't help him, she knew she coudln't help him, she knew she could only hope for the best to happen. Also you see her vast determination, when she hops on Appa, just like the last look on Aangs face before he leaped into the air, heading for his biggest foe.

maybe she was thinking he could die, or she was embarrassed that she answered his kiss back, or she is trying to sort exactly what she feels, or a combination of some or all of the above

but I don't think she was thinking "why did I kiss him back? I don't want anything romantic with Aang" as some people are trying to make it into

i think she was more in-between completly different feelings; happiness (because they kissed) and apprehension(because he was going to fight and she can only hope and wait)

Do you really think she had the time to pass between all those feelings, during 2 seconds ?

yep. and some others more.. the process of the feeling works much faster as the understanding of this process and what kind of feelings it are. (even if those feelings are new and very intensive)

we can't confirm(yet) that she was happy and thinking "i got a bf, i got a bf, i got a bf"

is MORE LIKELY(but can't be guaranteed)that she was embarrassed that she was caught still "kissing" in her mind after Aang had pulled out and she sorting if her feelings are real or her kissing back was just a reflex motion, or a combination of the two, it was too short of a time span to think she pondered that he might die(but still possible, and likely she thought that when he told her "what if i don't make it back?" )
