I just found an interview of the show's creators talking about this episode!!!

Its really interesting to see how they feel about it

They also give you some hints about upcoming eps!!

*Don't worry, no spoilers are given away about future episodes, just TSR.

    http://youtube.com/watch?v=eBGIQ7ZuuiU

urg. my computer blocked it. is it from NYCC? if not, could you give me the basic points of what they said? I'd love to know!

Thats weird how it would block it...
Well not to waste it for anyone who wants to watch the interview but they talked really in depth about what it was like to make the episode, their original ideas, and everything that they hoped to tell you through this episode.
Kay, thanks. i'll try to catch it another time. And yes, my computer loves to block all the good vids on youtube...

I and my friends have come to the conclusion that this episode was extremely rushed. It was fast paced (the beginning was great even if the fight came quickly) but then it immediately jumped to a new plot line... Something totally different. Zuko and Katara's "field trip" though action packed and fast still felt rushed. I'll organize my thoughts once my new episode frenzy rush wears down a bit.

The creators said it'd be intense and a "tear-jerke". If the flashbacks were handled better and we saw more of the significance of Katara's relationship with her mother, then it would've induced a bit more tearbending. I had highish expectations for this episode based on what I heard/read from the creators. Moar tomorrow.

I'd give it a 7/10 rating. The pacing really killed it for me. The flashbacks also weren't what they could've been and I'm basing them off of Zuko Alone and other minor flashbacks or memories. I liked it though but I won't find myself watching this episode for the sake of being entertained. Rather, watching certain scenes (Zuko-Azula fight for example) and dialogue (the Air Nomad wisdom for example).

As long as you could find something in it to keep you riveted at least for part of it, then this episode has succeeded. That is the nature of avatar; there is something in there for everyone. And sure, for us crazy Azula fans (I presume from your icon that you are one) there was no way that the rest of the episode would capture our interest as its wild start did. But in the end, all this doesn't matter. what matters is that:

    THE AVATAR IS BACK!!!

And he is back with a vengeance.

Yeah, yeah. Avatar is teh backzorz. :p But such an important part of Katara's character was just... well, rushed. It seemed like the loose end of Kya's death (woot! we can use her actual name now) was tied up rather than actually dealt with fully.

Actually, you are quite right about this episode being rushed. I felt like it was over in five minutes flat. But the fact it is, it felt rushed, because it was rushed. There is only one episode left until the finale, and it will presumably have some important stuff in it. TSR could easily have been stretched out into a two episode movie, but still, it did pretty well with what it had to work with. It managed to pack the Azula/Zuko fight, the flashbacks, the ninja mission, and great humor and an artful ending all into one 23 minute episode. That's pretty impressive.

I liked this episode alot but I do agree and I had mentioned my feelings here earlier about the pacing.

There were a couple of things that had me bracing myself through this episode as it played out:

1st Zuko's quips at Aang. I did understand them because he has taken jabs at Aang's peaceful timid nature before. However, I felt the comments he made in this ep seemed bit more harsh b/c they lacked clarification/support (from his point of view) that he has used to back such statements (ie Firebending Masters).

2nd Zuko's tough guy-bad cop interrogations with the FN soldiers. This was nerve-racking because it almost felt like he was trying to take over to prove himself to Katara. I thought I'd eventually hear one of those steroid-induced-changes in his voice like those of the most current of Batman films. Since, it didn't take that route it was more bearable though it was still a bit too machismo for my tastes.

3rd Katara's actions. I was expecting a bit more from her when facing her mother's murderer. I wasn't surprised but even just a simple forceful pin against tree w/ bloodbending would've done it for me. Hell, a forceful pin w/ waterbending would've done it. When I saw those chunks of ice go towards him, I was waiting for them to narrowly miss his body and pin in him in place to the ground. That gave me a midge of blueballs, sorry to say.

EDIT: 4th I almost forgot... more Kya plz. For all we know, Kya could've been a "NO WIRE HANGERS!" (that means bad for those who that get the reference. milkshakes 4 those who do.) kind of mom in terms of parenting, but we wouldn't know that from the lack of screen time she was given. For goodness sake, they had time for Haru, Teo & the Duke to do nothing but go exploring and yet all we find out is her name is Kya, she looks like Katara, and she died protecting her daughter. This is stuff many of us had guessed about her already. So, I was disappointed with how she was handled.

Hmm, me thinks it really would be nice for Zuko to address Katara's bloodbending. That look he gave her made me think that he realized at that moment that Katara actually could successfully go through w/ that promise she made him in WAT.

Oh darn. I was hoping to see the rumour of Ursa being Katara and Zukos mom somhow but alas it was not meant to be. Butt it is nice to finally see Katara's moms face.

Things are stacked for Aang. Can he really fight he Firelord without killing him?

Will we ever find out what happened to Ty Lee and Mai?

I too will go on to say the Sokka and Suki scene was the the funniest thing ever. Too bad their are no keep out zipper doors in the Avatar world. Zuko has just been mentally scarred further.

I lost track of Toph, she's with Hakoda and the others right?

Aang really needs to firebend train more. Has he done anything really?

I agree with you that Zuko's quips at Aang were uncalled for and that they had no backing, but I did like the way he forced himself on the firebenders and started the interrogation. I think it was supposed to be him trying to prove himself to Katara. Really, I think it helped her because she seemed so mad that she couldn't think straight.

Then again, I agree with you about her actions too. They should've been more forceful. And she could do to Zuko what she promised in WAT and then some...

No, Toph was with Aang because she was riding Appa, but we pretty much lost sight of her after that... And I think we just have to assume Aang's training. Remember, we didn't see all of either his water or earth bending training.

Well, with Zuko and the firebenders, I don't think it was unwarrented as a Zuko characteristic to run in and take charge (esp to prove something) but he was more lenient in BR when aiding Sokka and standing back when it was place to correct things and reach his goal even when it ended up affecting him personally (see: Mai). Here in SR, I felt all he had to really do was help get her through and locate the guy and then stand back or even completely get her through and to the guy and then stand back but always the end result being stand back and let her do what she came to do. Going in to restrain and yell at a man who's body was already in her complete control was pushing it for me. That's where I'm coming from with this.

One thing about this episode - we now know what the purpose was of Chit Seng escaping the Boiling Rock with them: they needed another firebender in the group who would be able to pilot the war balloon when they split up.

Well, I'm done for the night. As somone very wisely said at the begining of this thread, the sooner I sleep, the sooner tommorow comes and is time for another all new episode

    Good night.

I was surprised Aang didn't get jealous and actually let Katara and Zuko go on their own journey. And I didn't expect Katara to forgive Zuko so easily either. Maybe its just me :S

No, he didn't fire at Zuko. He did pull his hat in front of his face though; he was embarrassed. The Katara in the play had said that Aang was like a brother to her, which was a sort of throwback to some previous episodes, like The Fortuneteller, where she says, "Aang's just a good friend." He obviously didn't like the way their relationship was portrayed in this play, especially since it seemed to be portrayed fairly accurately.

-whistles- i wonder where iroh's been at ;P ( going on about the episode ) i do feel like it's been rushed...in my opinion the 2nd half of the 'fire book' wasn't played right. i mean seriously, i would have loved to see where Iroh went, Zuko's mother story(in depth), WHAT HAPPENED FIREBENDING TRAINING FOR AANG!(also i just realized, was the sun warrior's bending form that "1337" for aang and zuko to be gain that much power/knowledge) JUST SO MANY THINGS LEFT UNFINISHED!(unless they decide to fit everything in that 2 hour finale........)

Though this episode isn't that bad CAN I JUST SAY BLOOOOOODBENDING YAY!(katara has been doing some secret training hasn't she!) with that aside i do agree with someone saying that this should have been an hour episode! i mean come on!!!! a one hour episode would have done this episode's story justice.

I liked how they reincarnated Katara's original name to be her mom's.

Also! I did like the Jet reference they had. It was well-placed, and it's nice to know that our little terrorist isn't forgotten.

'Fire' book has been embarrasing.. It has had some choice episodes, but I just wish their had been more to it.

They space it out FOREVER, than wrap it un a neat little bow called 'Avatar Week!' so they can hurry up and show more Spongebob episodes.

when i rate an episode, there are five things i score on.

    1. was there women?

    yes

    2. was there explosions

    yes

    3. was there no deep thinking moments

    no

    4. was there violence for the sake of violence

    no

    5. was there martial arts action

    yes

For me this episode earns a 3/5. This wasn't nearly as actiony and adventure like as other episodes, didn't really care for it as much. can't wait to see Ozai in action!
