Most obvious one I'm gonna go with is hugs. Zutarians always claimed that kataang hugs didn't count as romance. Now that we have a hug, we're all saying its canon and Kataangers are now saying hugs don't count (which they kinda have a right to do after all our snobbishness, lol). However, to argue this, I will point out that obviously, katara and aang have hugged many times. It is a symbol of their relationship/frienship/whatever its called. However, the reason zutarians can spazz is that it is ZUKO and KATARA hugging. Aang and Katara hugged a billion times, its nothing special (sure its sweet, but we've seen it so many times before, and its expected of the two). But this was zuko and katara. The only time Zuko has hugged ANYONE was a very brief awkward hug with Iroh. He never hugged Mai. He only ever kissed her, and usually she initiated the kisses (pulling his face towards her etc). And considering how Zuko is often quite stiff and formal (well, at least, appears generally uncomfortable with affection) and whatnot, its highly unusual for him, transformation or not, to display such obvious affection (friendly or otherwise) for someone, especially someone who recently threatened to kill him. Zuko does not go around hugging people and handing out necklaces of flowers and smiling all the time. No, he does not. That would be very disturbing, and make me wonder which fanfic OOC zuko came from. Anyways, my point is, Zuko does not hug people. So why does he hug Katara? Granted, she flew at him, but if he was being his usual self he probably would have just stood there awkwardly until she moved away. He didn't need to hug her, and if he was acting like his usual self, he wouldn't have. It was entirely his choice, but considering his past actions, its a very unusual one for him. Now, to Katara. Yes, she has hugged Aang a million times, hugged Haru, hugged Sokka, and is basically a very affectionate and open person (shown by her frequent hugs and kisses to people she cares about). So yes, it is much easier to see her hugging Zuko - her personality is just open and friendly like that. However, we must take into account how much their relationship must change for her to hug him especially as it was seemingly for comfort (either herself or him, nobody knows. But I think most people agree it was comfort/forgiveness at least). She threatened to kill him. She currently despises him, doesn't trust him, and whatnot. Friendly as she is, I do not see her suddenly going and hugging him. Sure, she opened up to him in CoD, and has shown she's not afraid to open up a bit to people she views as enemies, but still, this is a bit much even for Katara. She hugs someone she recently hated. Obviously she's gotten over that, but I'm pretty sure she'd have to feel pretty comfortable around Zuko to just fly at him like that. And, considering her hatred of him now....dammit, I just want to see what he does to make her forgive him! lol Ok, so Katara isn't really the point here. She's friendly and huggable to everybody. The main issue is ZUKO. Zuko is closed-off, and not very affectionate. Hugging Katara is a HUGE step for him - particularly putting his arms around her waist. I suppose it was a natural step considering how she flew at him and all, but still, he could have just stood there and done nothing but look awkward. Also, they both seem to take comfort from this hug, meaning they both feel comfortable enough with each other to do so. I dunno, just because its so unusual, it just has more meaning to me than the 100+ kataang hugs. There. My long rant is over. Feel free to laugh at how much time I just wasted ranting over a barely-3-second clip of a trailer. But I don't care. I waste time. Its what I do. Plus, I'm a Zutarian. Making a lot out of nothing is what I do best (and for those of you who say its a dream, my argument still stands. Why would zuko and katara, or even Aang, dream about that hug? Unless it meant something, its a totally poinless thing to dream about. Surely, if Aang was dreaming, he'd come up with a lot worse, lol. And Zuko or Katara dreaming that - I think that would pretty much say they like each other. You guys better hope its the real thing, its much more easily explained away as friendship/comfort then, lol.) |

Excellent post! Although I'm a Kataanger, I agreed with many of your points and you actually put logic and reasoning behind everything (unlike many rabid shippers who come onto this thread). You deserve a cookie for that.  I agree that Zuko has never been open about his emotions to anyone. It did seem quite uncommon for him to be hugging Katara. But honestly, what did you expect him to do? She looked upset, like she needed comfort, and she basically just attacked him with a hug. Only a *insert word of choice here* would just stand there when the girl who he's been trying to gain the trust of forever asks for his comfort! Zuko has changed a lot in these past few episodes, and it seems pretty normal that he's becoming more comfortable around everyone. Also, I agree that Katara is open about her emotions and that she hugs a lot, but saying she kisses a lot of people is just flat-out wrong. Aang is the only person we've seen her kiss. At all. Three times on the cheek (after flirting with him right before the first one), then once on the lips (not counting the recent one in which she pulled away, but counting the time in which she closed her eyes and leaned into it). She's never kissed anyone else, so that point is kind of invalid. That was my two cents. But other than those two things I mentioned, I do agree with your post. |
