actually, the waterbenders learned from the moon and how it affected the tides and other stuff
there are some animals that can manipulate water, but the most noticeable ones are the sea serpents, but there has not been any hints at the series that they learned from them
about the airbenders
most of the things have to be "speculation and conjectures" the only facts are that Bryke said that the nomads are always airbenders because their connection to spirituality(and even at that, their view seems to raise lot of questions actually, more than answer them)
the arrows is to honor the bisons, only the avatar has his arrows light up (Aang, Yangchen and any previous ones)
most people(myself included) figure out (but is NOT FACT) that "kid is born" and most probably in a tent of a traveling nomad or in another nation where they have set up shop, not usually at or near temples. the first year or 2 they probably are with their family, maybe up to 4 or 5 years old. After that all of them are sent to temples, boys at either north or south temples, girls at either east or west temples, and bisons are raised at east temple. we think that usually that kid stays until 16. maybe 18 at the temple, after that, lot of them have mastered their airbending and are allowed to be nomads. some of them staying nomads till they die. others who become nomads later on when they are mature adults decide to return to temples to be instructors. maybe a few never become nomads and at time of "decision" they decide to stay and become instructors at the temples. wherever those who stay at the temples can have a mate or not, no idea.......... since males reside at south and north, females at east and west. Aang was about to become a "special case" just before he "disappeared" as the other monks with gyatso said that Aang was going to be sent to the east temple
as it was put in the flashback at "the storm"
