Azula dying? AZULA DYING?!!! rgc19, you have incurred my undying wrath. Azula's survival was (I feel) one of the key elements in the epicness of the finale. Also, there was nothing forced about Kataang, except for the fact that they weren't together by the end of Season 2. If anything Kataang was repressed, not forced. No comment on Toph or Jet. |
OK, I respect your opinion, and I'd like to defend some of mine. I already explained why I thought Aang should have died, so I'll move on to the next two. First off, Toph. Her situation with her parents was still unresolved by the finale, IMO. Her death would have served a 'lesson', so to speak, to her overprotective parents, who missed their big chance for redemption when she returned after saving Aang in 'blind bandit'. So no, her death wouldn't have been meaningless, and yes it would have ratcheted up the drama, which is not a good reason for a character death, but not necessarily a bad result. Next, Azula. I know a lot of debate has entailed since the finale concerning her true nature, be it her mental or emotional state, and whether she was really evil. In a way, her death would have been tragic, but it would have been fitting, the whole passing of the torch type thing. Plus I would have had Zuko kill her. Somehow Katara capturing her just wasn't quite satisfying. I always toyed with the idea of Zuko dying as well, but it would have been too depressing; ATLA is a story of redemption, not a tragedy. Plus who would be the new fire lord? As far as Jet, I'd have kept him alive for purely selfish reasons: in actuality, I found his death both consistent with and important to the plot. And I'll take back that Kataang was forced, I guess I was relying on a cliche when what I was trying to say was that I really preferred Jetara. Anyways, too much talk, I'd just like to iterate that by saying I'd have killed these characters doesn't mean I didn't like the characters or something, or that I enjoy watching young people die. I just had a slightly different vision for the finale, but at the same time, I respect Bryke's decisions and all of yours.
