Hell, this might be a pull, but I'm gonna say Jet reminds me of de Valera to Aang's Michael Collins. For anyone unfamiliar with Irish history, Collins helped end Irish resistance to British oppression by helping orchestrate a landmark treaty that would stop the violence but made major concessions to Britain. Eamon de Valera, on the other hand led the opposition to the treaty and some (conspiracy hats on everyone) believe he had a hand in Collins's assassination in 1922. (Jet tries to kill Aang, or at least he fights him). So in general Jet is the uncompromising, violent revolutionary in contrast to Aang, the peacemaker and his gaang (Sinn Fein). Sure, the history played out differently (and that's a whole 'nother story), but I think I see a basic resemblance.

Thanks. And we'll call that town that Jet tried to destroy (did it have a name?) Belfast.

Oh, I forgot. Ozai'd make a mean Churchill. And Azula is the queen. And Zuko would be... hmm... I'll get back to you on that one.

The fire nation I think has always drawn obvious comparisons to Japan, but I think I see a little colonial Britain in them as well. The colonies, of course, but also the general imperialist attitude, distinctive infantry uniforms, and the bad teeth. |
Bad teeth? I never noticed bad teeth? To me, the FN has always represented good hygiene as an ideal. Or mabye that's just Azula...

Wow, just read through the entire thread and I gotta say, very interesting. The point I'd like to make is about Ba Sing Se. There was a lot of discussion as to what it was most like, some saying Troy, some saying Constantinopole and some saying the Great Wall of China. Actually, Bryke said they modelled it after the Forbidden City in China but don't let that stop you. XD No, for me the Troy parallel works best. With Azula being the Trojan Horse. XD Also, anyone care to bring up the Luck of Troy? I don't know if it was real or not but I heard a story that inside a temple in Troy there was a part of a meteorite that had fallen to Earth ages ago, and it was believed that as long as that meteorite was held by Troy the city could never fall. Shortly before the Trojan Horse, one of the Greek heroes snuck into the city and stole it and the rest, as they say, is history. |
Really? That's interesting.
Since we're talking about Azula being the Trojan horse, there's also the part of the legend where, as the Trojans were dragging the horse into the city, a wise old man threw a rock at the horse, revealing that it was hollow. He told the Trojans that they should not trust the Greeks, and that it would be far better to burn the horse than bring it into the city. The man was a prophet who had aided the Trojans well in the past, but for some strange reason they completely ignored him, prefering to believe the story a "captured" Greek spy had told them about the people who held the horse winning the war.
It's kind of similar to the way Zuko ignored Iroh's wise advice, and chose instead to believe Azula's comforting lies.

I can't think of anything. No one can. It's pretty much entirely Axrendale. Ax, THINK OF SOMETHING NEW! |
Okay - working on it. I think I've found something - I'll do some quick research. I'll post it tommorow.

i am surprised that no one else has mentioned this... the white lotus society is much like the free masons of today. sure there are no great lodges that the lotus people hang in, but the secrecy, messages, and power are much like the masons today. |

To try and kick some life back into this thread, I would like to point out that modelling the Sun Warriors in the Firebending Masters after the Aztecs was a very accurate choice, as the Aztecs worshipped the sun as their primary god. Also notable is the fact that Japan, regarded by many as an influence on the Fire Nation, was in history often known as the "Land of the Rising Sun", due to its location to the east of China. |
