I am 30 and I started watching the show with my son(4) last year. We both love it. I even have my wife watching it now. My son acts like he is bending all the time. Just tonight in the tub he started waving his arms under water and said "look dad I am water bending!" Some parts of the show get a little violent for him but for the most part its great! I just wish the show was on more of a regular schedule, and had an official website that was not on nick.com

Animation shows like Avatar are great for all ages.?? Cartoons can be so much more creative, and mainstream shows are just too cookie-cutter.??I'm in my early 20's and most the shows I'm watching right now??(Avatar, Eureka 7, Inuyasha, IGPX) are animation except for a few innovative mainstream ones like 24 or Lost.

I'll take Avatar over another CSI or Law & Order spin-off anyday.?? Or how about another canceled sitcom?

it actually really doesn't surprise me that there is a generation of those older than the targeted audience watching. I'm 17 and back in the day i'll begrudgingly admit i got into the more eastern style of animation via pokemon. Getting older I really went off that style of plot with no narrative continuity, and over the past couple of years i haven't really watch much animation at all (apart from gibli stuff, hurray for wacky Japanese films). I think avatar fills a bit of a gap for me. I know its a kids show and sometimes its a nice reminder, but it also improves on all the things i grew to dislike about weekly animation and have come to expect, from all the tv i watch.

Too old is mind over matter, when it comes to anything. I think its a shame that people initially type cast avatar for what it appears to be and not what it is. Shame more of our generation don't give it a go. I think more would enjoy it. Ah well, their loss.

This show is great for people of all ages. It's very smart, has a great story line, and has some funny jokes. Some people just don't understand that. Unfortunately, even someone who is 13 like me has to hide that they like this show, when I'm barely over the target audience. It must suck to be even older; you might have to hide it more.

im with yah there man. your considered a loser or immature if you watch cartoons in 7th grade.

the show avatar: the last airbender is targeted for 6 - 11 year olds but I think it appeals to way more than that . I'm 16 and i watch it religously , my friends say its just a Kid's show ( the fools lol) so how old is too old for this show ? I say anyone can watch but they say its for babies??

Occasionally animated television shows with a target demographic of 6-11, typically boys, can reach a much wider audience. Avatar is not the first to achieve this.

From 1994-96, Disney had a show with similar results, "Disney's Gargoyles". The show used mythology from many different sources, such as Shakespeare and Norse mythology??and weaved them together in such a way that the show has maintained a strong fanbase ever since, even having conventions annually with actors and creators present. Even a DVDs for the first and half the second seasons are out.

In the United States people tend to assume that animated shows are are just for kids, however, in other parts of the world, particularly in Japan, there is absolutely no such stigma, and there,??animated movies can be extremely commercialy successful even when they are completely *Inappropriate* for young children.?? So it's simply the fact that historically in the U.S. animation has been used only for children's entertainment that has caused people to develop this prejudice against it.?? So that's one reason people often jump to the conclusion that Avatar is a "kid's show."?? But what is the real definition of "kid's show?"?? Some would say that anything on a kid's??network could be called a kid's show because it is broad cast on a channel that is watched by kids.?? Others might say that a kid's show is??any show??whose content is not inappropriate for kids, or perhaps, any show whose content appeals to kids.?? I think the definition is debatable but the important point is that, although kid's definitely can't watch "adult shows," no matter what definition you use, there is nothing whatsoever??to preclude an adult from watching a kids show.????So it is simply a WASTE OF TIME to argue about whether Avater is a kid's show, because depending on the definition it may well be true that Avatar is a kid's show, but when they say that to *tease* you, they *imply* that it's a silly, frivolous show whose content appeals ONLY to immature audiences (therefore they're calling you immature).?? If you can get them to admit that that is what they mean when they say it's a kids show, you've got them, because the truth is that any claim that Avatar's content appeals only to kids is demonstrably wrong!?? Once you've gotten them to admit to the above, tell them their claim is false and erroneous, and then proceed to list the facets that make the show appealing to??a mentally??mature audience:?? the long term continuity of its story, the weightiness of the issues it deals with (like war, genocide, etc...), the character development, the plot complexity, the abundance of characters who are neither good nor evil, the realistic imagery and cultural basis for the show's fantasy elements, the mature humor which is not based largely on sarcasm and not on potty jokes, etc.??

Okay, I'm 13. I LIVE off cartoons. My friends don't watch cartoons they wacth more "adult" shows. But I'm probably the one most mature kids of my age (although I can be immature when I feel like it ) I've just grown up with my cartoons, and in no way do I see them as childish.

I believe Avatar is a respectable, kid-friendly yet adult-intriguing show. It should not be labled as a cartoon, kid show, or even as anime (it is American, after all.)

Even my Dad ocassionally watches Avatar, and he respects it because it has good quality animation and action. I don't have any friends who watch it, though (I guess Avatar's just too good for them lol).

Is it just me, or does it seem like that there are more people watching ATLA that are OVER the targeted age?

And I honestly can't see a six-year old understand the show's diverse plot.....

You have to realize that the story is told on many different levels. It appeals to very young kids because of the action. It appeals to teens and young adults because of the romance and emotion. And finally it appeals to adults because of the deep story and the emphasis on spiritualism.

I just turned 37.?? My son just turned 6.?? Yes, he misses the intricacies but he still understands quite a bit.?? I enjoyed watching my husband's eyebrows go up when my boy explained to him all about how Zuko's daddy burned his face!?? Also, he explained to my Avatar-newbie husband a few months ago that "Aang can bend everything, and Zuko is the bad guy, but sometimes he's Aang's friend when he has on his good guy suit." (Blue Spirit)

Plus, my son LOVES Sokka.?? When we think Sokka is being marginalized and get annoyed that h doesn't have a deeper story, we should remember that he keeps the kiddies entertained!

Alright, I've been watching Avatar pretty religiously from the beginning last February, and I look forward to the random Fridays that a new episode premires, especially this second season! I turned 18 in January, and im so excited to see that there are many older fans around - mostly because ive done a pretty good job of hiding my enthusiasm for it from my family and friends. Again, im 18 and going to college in a few months with Avatar downloaded onto my laptop. I just appreciate really good animation that isnt Spongebob or some pre-school show. There's no shame in that, but our society makes it feel that way...oh well, their loss!!

yea it's definitely not you, bc I watch it and im 15 not 6 or anything in b/w that and 11. And it's true, everyone can watch it! I mean some of the themes expressed in the show aren't meant for 6-11 year olds to understand. You've gotta have some type of understanding to fully understand jokes in the show. They should definitely think about extending the age range or just re-doing it. lol.

I just turned 22 last week, and am a senior in college, and I love Avatar. I even got a couple of my friends to start watching Avatar, and am currently working on getting my gf to watch it. That, and House. Problem is, we rarely have the time on Friday nights, so we usually get to watch neither. Here's the thing with people that say that Avatar is a children's show and is for people who are immature: ask them what they watch on tv, and they will often tell you they watch shows like the OC and the crap that MTV produces, or some random unreality tv show. Now who's immature?

I don't hide the fact that I like Avatar. I don't go advertising it, but i'm not afraid to mention it if the right topic comes along. In fact, I would prefer it that the public mocks the older Avatar viewers. It just means that we are more mature, and therefore, better than them. We should be happy that we like a show that's not mainstream with just sex and random violence on it. That in itself is a sign of maturity, and it's nothing to be ashamed of. Unless, of course, you are ashamed of being mature, lol.
