Armies are made up of people, not land.

I think everyone is over-thinking Avatar. It's not supposed to agree with the laws of nature for crying out loud!

That's a little narrow minded. First of all they were fighting nations on whom they had a great advantage in technology. Second they usually used mercenaries, however, there is a lot of nationalism in Avatar, which only leaves very small amount of mercenaries.

FN tech is far superior to the other nations. And a good majority of colonial forces were from the country they were fighting for since Europe used to be all about nationalism back in the day.

real life physics + Avatar = complete confusion Back to the current topic: Flying with firebending is unusual. Everyone expects airbenders to fly, but firebenders?! Azula's skill is something that will catch you off guard.

Also, metalbending isn't as easy as it seems. Metal is purified earth, so it takes the very best earthbenders to sense the "earhly" elements in the metal. People have probably thought about it, but were not skilled enough to do it. BTW, Toph had not been a master of earthbending for 12 years. She's twelve years old now (-_-). Plus, she never really needed metalbending until the end of season two.

Why do you think all waterbenders should know that you can bend plants? At the North and South poles, there isn't much of a need for plants to bend since you would be surrounded by water and ice. Most waterbenders probably never needed the skill, so it was never thought about. Notice the waterbenders who did not live at the poles knew about plant bending. They needed to know the about plant bending in case there isn't a large supply of water around (unlike the poles where there is enough water always). And bloodbending was simply not thought about. Did you think about bloodbending before it was mentioned? It took a bit of thought to realize that you can bend humans because it isn't ordinary to think about waterbending in that way.

The air nomads were ambushed. The fire nation probably had thousands of soldiers. Plus, there were mostly kids at the air temple (as far as we know). The air nomads weren't going to win a fight under those circumstances. Plain and simple. And did you notice that there were a lot of fire nation skeletons and helmets lying around at the Southern Air Temple? You can infer that the airbenders did indeed defend themselves.

It wasn't that hard for fire nation soldiers to get to the air temples once they found out where they were. The air temples were on mountains. You can climb mountains if you have the right equipment. Problem solved.

I hate metalbending. It doesn't make any sense at all. The show mentions that metal is purified earth. As far as I know, rocks and sand are mostly made out of carbon, while a pure metal doesn't contain any carbon at all. I just can't stand it that even though metal and earth are entirely different, bending them is still called earthbending

It makes perfect sense. You have to understand how metal is forged. Most metals are taken from ores, which are clumps of the metal with earth embeded in it. Then the metal undergoes a purification process in which the earthen impurities are removed from it. However, the process is not perfect, and some earthen impurities get left behind. What Toph bends are these earth particles, not the metal itself. The metal moves because the earth particles are too embeded to be extracted by earthbending. So yes, metalbending basicaly is earthbending.

Metalbending aside I don't get how earth particles could be in crystal. I'm not that big geology.

Crystals are made up of things from earth. Earth is in them. Logically, Aang and Toph can bend crystals if earthen particles are in it.

some crystals are earth. Sand, for example, is nothing more than tiny crystals of silicon dioxide. So the crystals that Aang was shown bending in CoD must have been some form of earth. Besides, the word crystal simply describes the way the atoms, ions, or molecules of the substance are arranged, not whether the substance is earth or not.

That is interesting because firebenders have the ability to control energy but waterbenders can also indirectly control energy through ice.
I understand the fire part being that fire branches out into heat, energy, and light. But how can ice be related to energy. Both fire and energy fall into non-matter, it being conpletly different from ice whic is matter. I'm sorry but I don't see the connection.
Actually E = m * c(squared). I know thats not what I mean but energy and matter IS related.
I know that, but now I suddenly had an apifany(sp?). They connected fire and lighting together. Firebenders should have greater control with energy. I can now sort of see why the firenation is so strong. They sort of absorb energy unlike the other elements (except for water and moon thingy). They could use other sources of that type of energy to make themselves stronger, like energy vampires. Wow. Just think what people from the avatar world would be able to do if they aplied the knowledge we know today to their bending skills.
Iroh explained lightning in "Bitter Work". Lightning is created when energy is separated into positive and negative elements, which is out of balance. It restores balance by crashing back together as lightning, which is released by the fire bender. What I don't know is, how does Azula use lightning to fly? (Or is it blue flame?) Whatever, WTF?
Yes firebenders can rip the balance of energy apart to generate lightning but they can also transfer energy as we saw Avatar Roku do. Firebenders should(in theory) be able to make things cold by transfering the kinetic energy out of them possibly also making ice. Waterbending seems to deal with individual atoms and how they move together, firebending seems to deal with energy, airbending seems to deal with volume and earthbending seems to deal with solid matter.
Thats exactly what I was thinking. I wonder how powerful they could be if they applied that type of knowledge to their bending. And what do you mean we've seen Roku transfer energy?
Proof! You can see sozin is using the channeling technique used in lightning re-direction to force the energy out of the lava, through his body and out the other hand. Apparently lightning isnt the only type of energy firebenders are capable of channeling.

Yes, it is very hard to scroll down the page a little and read the titles to find it.

But it could get booted to the 2nd and 3rd page because of the popularity of this forum. And umm, Haru sure had an important role ever since he joined the gAang.
