I for one definitely don't think its going downhill, but here's why I think so many people think so.

Once Stephen Hillenburg and S1-3 writers like CH Greenblatt and Merriwether Williams ,just to name two, left after the movie (although Greenblatt wrote two S4 episodes if I remember correctly), they had to replace multiple people on the staff with new writers, producers, etc.

The new writers have decreased the humor that adults love and have focused on more kiddy humor and gross out gags. Some people get annoyed with that stuff and thus think that the show is going downhill.

I for one disagree with them (although I to hate the gross out gags). I think that while this show will probably never reach the level of awesomeness that is S1-3, that it is still better than all of the shows that are currently airing on Nickelodeon. Also, the new new writers are definitely showing signs of improvement as they are putting more effort into making this show better for everyone.

During Season 5, it looked like it was starting to go downhill, but now it's actually going uphill. Season 6 was an improvement and Season 7 has gotten off to a great start.

Personally, I think season 4 was the drop in quality, and then season 5 brought it back up.

I'm loving it. It's not going downhill to me. Some things are different, but it still has the charm.

Because season 4 presented a drop on quality and humor, with season 5 not helping, although it is recovering with season 6 and 7.

    Has season 7 started yet?
Anyway, I think the show definitely went downhill, however not anymore. To me it recovered a bit after season 4, and now it's pretty consistent. Although the current episodes aren't as good as the old ones.

    1. The show doesn't have the same clevor personalities, that got it its wide fanbase, from seasons 1-3 anymore.

    2. The show has switch from adult-dabbed humor and themes, to a more childish format.

    3. SpongeBob's character has somewhat drastically (ignore my oxymoron) changed. A lot of people are saying it's because of his new high-pitched voice, but he's also not as intellectual as he was before.

I think that sums it up. Just to be clear, those are not meant to be critisms. I still think the show is doing great and I'm still a devoted fan. You can tell that the new writers are giving it an honest effort, and I believe the show is making a comeback.

Unless you like the show new more-cartoonish format, then I guess it's going uphill.

    Ditto.

And I think Season 7 has turned out great, so ratings should improve.

I think both styles have their merits and problems, and as a show, Spongebob is still doing great. I see the changes like an awesome person putting on new clothes.
