I think she's a Mary Sue simply for the fact that Zuko knew her for, what...all of a few hours? By the end of the date, she kisses him, and he kisses her back. Ummm...any fanfiction I've read with a Mary Sue always ends up like that. The girl knows Zuko a short time and is able to break him out of a shell that took years to create, in only a matter of hours. Granted, she was sloppy, but so what? That doesn't change my view of her.
She's a Mary-Sue, and that ruins the character development built so carefully over 30+ episodes. He's too good a character to be smashed to pieces by such a perfect character. Until I see some proof she isn't, she is by all means a Mary-Sue and doesn't belong in a relationship with Zuko. Creators, I thought you were above this!

I'm with you. I was sitting watching the episode thinking, "C'mon! Zuko doesn't act like that to anybody, let alone a girl he's known one day!" My only hope is she doesn't come back

I hear ya, I hear ya. We should start an anti-Mary-Sue fanclub or something. *cough*ANTI-JIN*cough*
her name reminds me of alcohol...XD

I've made a character and I'm still working on perfecting my OC to make her a non-Mary-Sue. She doesn't even have a real romantic involvement with the characters, just a mutual family relationship. It's actually quite cute without being sappy and cliche. I just hope it doesn't crash and burn.

She may be nice, but that's just it! She's too perfect. Zuko is too good for someone with so few character flaws.

How many minutes of screentime did she have? You're expecting far too much depth for a little vignette like that. You're missing the point, to boot. Zuko's story is about Zuko, not Jin. It's about him enjoying behaving like a young man his age...with some reservations. It???s about him taking another step out of his isolated, self-centered shell.

And if she does have any, it might just be so that Zuko can comfort her! So many ways to become a Mary-Sue. Creators, I am disappointed.

Now you're just making wild speculation and condeming the writers for what you're making up. That's very uncharitable.

Exactly we dont know the character so we cant possibly call her perfect.?? ITs like puting a Dead body on the Set and Saying?? she his perfect because she has no flaws, She has no flaws because she has no character yet

People take this crap way too seriouly. What? they expected him to be an emo??for the entire??freaking series? He can be a badass and still have a girlfriend.

That mary sue stuff is also getting annoying, I mean she was only on for like 5 minutes tops.

My point was look what she accomplished in the 5 or so minutes we saw her. That's the thing that gets me.

Zuko breaking out of his shell has been a long time coming,
and frankly, its about time. I was getting tired of his whiney butt. If
anything, this vulnerability and awkwardness during the date is
refreshing. Furthermore, with the many directions the writers could go with this
new plot development, Zuko has the potential to head right back to angstyville.

I have the sneaking suspicion that most people who are upset over this
"mary-sue" are angry because their katzuko (or whatever ridiculous
couple nickname) pairing may have been blown to bits. Worse yet, it???s
because they themselves aren't dating him.

My hunch, knowing what I know about future plot details, is that this character
is a stepping stone for other things.

Too bad. I kinda liked this "Mary-Sue". But if I am wrong
and she stays, I won't be upset. It would have been worse if a love interest was a hyped-up
and supercool fighter. That would have truly been worthless.

(Don't be fooled by the nick. I didn't name myself after Zuko. I had this
    nick long before.)

I think he was ready for change. I doubt she alone accomplished anything. It was more Iroh who was the catalyst for his evolution.

i kinda liked jin, she was nice and all but i didnt like the way zuko acted, i mean she wasent that nice, firebending for her was the stupidest thing i think a charatcer has done in this show, exsepcally after he was just accused of being a fire bender, i just dont see how someone could mean that much to zuko only after a few hours, it was horiably unbeleiveable. so i dont really want her to come back, even though she was nice. but i bet she will come back, i just hope if she does zuko uses his brain alittle more.

I've done a heck of a lot of stupid things for guys that I like, and I generally start seriously crushing on them as soon as I meet then , so I don't think its that weird that Zuko firebended for her

what if zuko's date, jin, was really an informant for the dai li, who are investigating the accusations of their latest brainwashed victim, jet.

    or

anyone could have saw zuko firebend on his date with jin. it may only be a matter of time before someone gives him up.

just speculation. that, and tryin say something besides mary sue this mary sue that

You know...now that you mention it...

The way she appeared from around a corner when Zuko was waiting outside the tea shop, the way she asked about what he and Iroh were doing before they came to the city and even tested his claim to be a circus performer by asking that he juggle???and ???Oh no! The lanterns are not lit up with some fire! What a disappointment! If only there were some way to fix this.??? Too convenient, perhaps?

Sounds plausible, at least...might be nothing.

There's a lot of information that's missing to assume Zuko didn't get comfortable with Jin.?? We go from them meeting at sundown to them finishing dinner, and then they are at the fountain.?? There's a lot of time for Jin to have convinced him.?? She was forward enough to ask him out, so she'd probably keep the conversation going.??

As was mentioned by Zukone, Zuko has been going through changes for a long time.?? He went from being obsessed at the beginning of the show to recognizing patience and control by the end of season 1.?? He has become disillusioned of his hope to return home.?? He has seen the damage the Fire Nation has done to innocent people as he and Iroh flee.?? Who knows how many philosophical discussions they have had to help him learn to appreciate the other elements.?? Zuko is a man that has gone from being royalty to the harsh life of a refuge.?? He has also realized how much Iroh means to him.?? They have been in Ba Sing Se long enough to have developed a presence within their community, as well.

I liked Jin and even if she doesnt show up ever again I still stand strong the belief that she is NOT a mary sue. Watch a few harem animes and you'll see what a mary sue is....
