Well notice how in in The Firebending Masters...
the 2 dragons shot fire straight at Aang and Zuko, but instead of burning them to a crisp, the fire spiraled around them in a perfect funnel never touching either one.

That conclusion seems to suffice, nice work.
*cough* I haven't seen that episode yet... Thank you though, for putting that in a spoiler tag. It was very polite of you. I'm going to go away now so I can avoid a spoiler.

The Kappa. It has a gourd of water on its head. I was attacked by a Kappa once. It dragged me under water. I haven't been seen since. |

Is that Harry Potter? |
Funny, when I've been thinking of a certain familiar for the watertribes I've been thinking of those penguin-thingies that is shown in the first episode....but I don't think they exist on the Northspole (or do they)...
Well as long as we don't get an explanation from the show or the creators itselfs I think this question will never truly be answered...
(this said without thinking of the Koi Fishes.)
I think that the wanterbending animal is a wolf. It makes sense, becasue the moon controls water tides, and the moon and the wolf go together.
One of Sokka's warrior outfits actually had a holf head as a part of it.
