Techincally, a dragon doens't bend fire, it spits fire. So, if the Water and Fire elements are connected in opposites and share certain aspects(heavenly bodies granting power) then you could say the Unagi is the Waterbender's familiar. But, it is far too violent as someone else said to be attributed to the philosophy of Waterbending. I'm sure a good Waterbender or Avatar could tame it though.

I dunno, when a friend and I spit up in the air, it doesn't form a tornado of saliva...

Maybe spit was a bad analog. How about breath? If you watch your breath on a cold night, the pattern almost looks like a Dragon's fire.

*cough* I haven't seen that episode yet... Thank you though, for putting that in a spoiler tag. It was very polite of you. I'm going to go away now so I can avoid a spoiler.

The Kappa. It has a gourd of water on its head. I was attacked by a Kappa once. It dragged me under water. I haven't been seen since.

Funny, when I've been thinking of a certain familiar for the watertribes I've been thinking of those penguin-thingies that is shown in the first episode....but I don't think they exist on the Northspole (or do they)...

Well as long as we don't get an explanation from the show or the creators itselfs I think this question will never truly be answered...

(this said without thinking of the Koi Fishes.)

I think that the wanterbending animal is a wolf. It makes sense, becasue the moon controls water tides, and the moon and the wolf go together.
