I have a ton or reasons why I ship Kataang. I liked the pairing since the first episode where Aang started showing an interest in Katara. This went on for several episodes until Katara started showing feelings towards Aang. I'm not the kind of person who ships what LOOKS hot or cute or whatever. I go by chemistry, I guess and they make such a cute couple. Some Zutarians say Aang's too young or too short, but I completely disagree. Too short? Bald? I see nothing wrong with the fact that Aang is too short. I don't even see why looks matter. And Katara's not the type of person to judge, either. Besides, he IS going to grow up. And when he does, huh. Hopefully they'll have an epilogue in the future ^^ Too young? There's a two year difference between Zuko and Katara as well. And this is a different world. Obviously age doesn't matter if it's normal for a sixteen year old to marry. And when SOME (Note the some) use the opposites attract thing with Zuko being a firebender and Katara water? First off, I think it's a poor reason to state why they should be together. Besides, isn't Aang a firebender, too? There's also the excuse that Zuko lost his mother and his father hates him, so he needs someone like Katara to comfort him. Aang has lost a lot more than Zuko. Don't get me wrong, I feel bad for Zuko and all, but Aang lost his entire family. His origin. He then finds out he's the avatar and has to defeat the firelord or else it's his fault and the world ends. He can't be a normal kid. Zuko only his mother and we don't even know if she's dead or not. He wants to defeat his father, so he doesn't care about him. And I don't know about you, but I'd rather lose one family member than my whole family o_0 And I don't think Katara needs someone who's always unhappy and miserable. She needs someone who would make her happy and her life fun. I mean, if it weren't for Aang, her home would probably be destroyed and she'd be dead. Aang as a little brother? Ugh, I hate this. Katara's motherly to everyone. It's not just Aang. Everyone. And big sister's don't kiss, hug, or give romantic looks repeatedly to little brothers. I guess I just have my own opinions, but what I find more romantic is falling in love with your best friend. It's like if you knew this person for so long and then it suddenly hits you that you have feelings for that person, but you're too scared to admit it. And then when that person has the same feelings as you do. I don't know. I just find it more romantic than hating someone at first, and then falling in love with them. It's too quick. So...yeah. That's why I like Kataang |

Nope. Not me. That's why I want Zuko and Katara. It keeps the story from contradicting what the guru painfully spelled out. Makes it so that the show ends on a positive note instead of the level of a bad fanfic.

I think most of the points you made are right on. The only one I have an issue with, is the whole "best friends" fall in love thing. I've never been a big fan of the "we were BFF4evuh but now we lurrvee each other". Blah, most series that take this plot forumula on, go about it in a sloppy manner [ Danny Phantom I'm looking at you.] that is boring to the watcher.
I always enjoyed, Kataang, as a pairing because it has managed not to fall into that "Suddnllyyy I looveeeuuu'1101 cliche. Aang has shown that he has had a crush on Katara since the begining. Throughout the seasons, it has shown Aang maturing and his feelings for Katara maturing. He has learned to love her, as part of his family and as a romantic interest. His feelings for Katara are a pivotal part of the storyline.
Just for the record, I love onsided Kataang most of all, I think Aang could love Katara without being with her, because he is just that...neat. Not that he woudn't Aangst about it for awhile.
I'm almost positive Kataang will be canon, but who knows maybe it'll end up Zukaang [Not that I'd complain...slash is my friend]. Zutara is a great ship fanfiction and fanart wise, though. I can't wait to see some Katara/Zuko bonding on the show, I think it'll be epic.
Also on the Guru: I'm not so sure what he says is what Aang thinks it is. Afterall, didn't Avatar Roku get married and master the avatar state?

It sounds like if Kataang wins in the end, no matter how they go about it, you are think its going to be "of the level of a bad fanfic".
Bryke wouldn't let the show stoop to that level, ever. (Bad fanfics make me cry for the world)

Point 1: Danny Phantom had so many things wrong with it, the BFF to BF/GF was not a critical factor.
Point 2: Attachment doesn't always = love
Point 3: We don't know what Roku gave up.
More on Roku/Guru/7th Chakra: We don't know, but I think it's supposed to be ANY earthly attachments. I think he could become attatched at any given time. Meaning: The avatar state could be blocked by anything he gets too attached to. Getting married must have meant he was in love with her, not because of his "blushy-blushy" attitude towards her. This show is big on families, and I think it is harder to have a stable and loving family when you don't love your spouse with your all. Why WOULD Roku marry, if he wasn't in love with Ta Min? I have a feeling being the Avatar annd being married isn't the easiest thing to balance. If he felt she wasn't that important I don't think he would have made things more complicated by marrying her.
To Angel: Hmmm I think Katara's feelings have been building up, in a romantic sense, for Aang since the cave of two lovers. I just don't think she really understands how she feels. That or she will *gag* just suddenlly "discover her looourveee' for Aang. The creators have done a great job of making Katara's feelings much less obvious than Aang's.
Aang is a selfless person, He often gives up what he wants for the sake of others. It's what makes him such a great hero. Which is why if he gives up Katara, I'll be very proud of Mike and Bryan. Of course I'm not so sure the younger viewers [6-11yrs old] of Avatar would appreciate this XD
I am so going to love the upcoming episodes. I really want to see more of total-crazy-overprotective Katara. I love her Zuko, death-threat.
to daveshan:
Point 1: I was using DP as an example for a bad bff turned bf/gf relationship. I'm not saying it was a critical factor, DP did have many things falling apart towards the end. I felt it best represents a boring, stale, best friends turned lovers formula playd out.
I was contrasting it to avatar's unending greatness
Point 2: ?? You mean for Roku? I think it has to be a form of love, maybe not in a romantic way, but it has to be something holding you back or hindering your best interests. Azula is the best example of this, she doesn't let anything attach to her, so she can suceed [ It seems that Ty Lee and Mai accidently attatched to her]
You guys are pretty chill' on this forum, haha I've met some pretty rabid Kataang/Zutarian fans before.

Ok, points......as for the younger viewers fan-base, my youngest brother (almost 11 - at the end of july of all times ) does not like Kataang. He uses the age argument of all things - he says its just weird for a 12-year-old to get a serious girlfriend (then he said that 14 and 16 are much better ages, but we won't go into that ). He just can't see a relationship of that age working. However, he (i just asked him again, lol) did say that he wouldn't mind it so much if Aang was older. Then he said "but doesn't aang have to give her up anyway?" which just made me laugh. Back to the point about attachment not = love. Well, I've said this somewhere before, but the Guru talks about earthly attachment. In other words, what attaches Aang to this world. He's the Avatar, the bridge between the spirit and real worlds. He can't be attached to one or the other, because then he's not fulfilling his duty. So, he has to get rid of his earthly attachments in order to be the Avatar and save the world. But this attachment does not have to be romantic love. It could be anything - friends, your home, your family. Yes, all of those are "love" in a sense, but not necessarily romantic love. For instance, Roku's attachment could have been his best friend Sozin - whom he obviously gave up his friendship for if he was able to attack him. But we don't know Roku's attachment, so I'll leave that there (I doubt it was Ta Min though. Else, Roku would not have gone back to her. He would know the danger, and try to avoid it. Not tempt himself by being married to her - it would be far too easy to become attached again) Also, comparing Roku/Aang and Ta Min/Katara. Roku could love Ta Min, just as Aang can love Katara, as long as they don't let that love turn into earthly attachment. They can love, as long as they understand that there their duty is more important. For example, when the volcano errupted, did Roku run off with Ta Min? No, he left her side to fight the erruption and save ALL the villagers/whatever. He left his wife to do his duty. Aang, on the other hand, puts Katara before his duty. For example, the Guru. If Aang stayed, he could master the AS, save the world, and just be the awesome fully-realised avatar. However, he does not stay. The second he hears Katara is in danger, he leaves. He doomed the world to save her. Yes, its good that he chose love over power (As Iroh says later on to mislead us), but the fact is that he let down the whole world. Roku didn't just save his wife, he saved everyone. Aang didn't save everyone. He almost didn't even save Katara. He allowed his attachment to stop him doing his duty. He failed the world by choosing Katara. He chose to keep his attachment to the world instead of saving it. Roku however, even though his wife was in mortal danger too, chose his duty (assuming she was his attachment - but even if she wasn't, he knew duty > love). Instead of just flying off with her, he saved everyone. He did what the Avatar should have done. He loved his wife, but she wasn't his attachment. He saved the world first. Hope that makes some sense. Probably doesn't (as I seem to say Ta Min both was and wasn't his attachment, lol), but I hope at least some of it does |
he emphasized let go 3 times, he only said forgotten ONCE, so it implies it was for that momnent, not necessarilly forever
later:
Guru Pathik: (voice-over) Now, think of your attachments and let them go.(4th time)
(An image of Katara appears, and drifts back toward the horizon to finally vanish with a twinkle of light. The sky ceases to spin.)
a few seconds later whenAang went to Katara as he sensed her in danger
Guru Pathik: (calling after him) No Aang! By choosing attachment, you have locked the chakra! (Aang draws to a stop) If you leave now you won't be able to go into the Avatar State at all!
but wait what happens later?
Katara bends the water from the channel and forms a ring of water around her. The water sprouts eight tentacles as she enters the octopus stance. Aang enters his fighting stance and prepares to face his many opponents. He then looks to Katara, who is desperately fighting off the Dai Li agents.)
Aang: There's too many.
(Aang remembers what Guru Pathik told him at the Eastern Air Temple.)
Guru Pathik: (in Aang's memory) The only way, is to let her go.
Aang: (sadly) I'm sorry Katara. (so Aang chooses to let her on her own, the needs of the many outweighting the ones of One)
(Aang turns around and earthbends several crystals out of the ground to form a tent over him. Aang sits down and begins meditating. We enter inside of Aang's mind, where he once again comes face to face with the avatar spirit residing inside him, high above the world and surrounded by the starry heavens. The avatar spirit surrounds Aang in a swirling orb between its hands, and Aang's arrow glows.
he was about to reach permanently the Avatar state, but WHAT LOCKED IT was Azula "killing him" , not choosing Katara over staying with the Guru, and he actually LET GO of Katara when he was reaching for the AS
so Aang almost reached AS even though pathik said it would be impossible

quotes from COD and the Guru Guru Pathik: Now, let all of those attachments go. Let them flow down the river. Forgotten. (At these final words, Aang is abruptly drawn from his vision.) Aang: (startled) What? Why would I let go of Katara? I...I..I love her. Guru Pathik: (reasonably) Learn to let her go, or you cannot let the pure cosmic energy flow in from the universe. Aang: (crossly) Why would I choose cosmic energy over Katara? How could it be a bad thing that I feel an attachment to her? Three chakras ago, that was a good thing. Guru Pathik: (firmly) You must learn to let go.

i agree with you. I dont even think the Katara/7th Chakra thing is an issue anymore, as it seems Aang has already "let Katara go" (which i take into meaning he lets go of the need to fight and protect her, leaving her on her own while he goes into the Avatar State, but not letting go of his love for her.)
