Be sure to add that Avatar has tons more prestigious awards, including a coveted Emmy nomination (hopefully a win next year) that Naruto will never receive because of it's redundancy and shonen predictability. If your friend cereally thinks Naruto is original in any form, s/he should watch more shonen anime...at least until they see how it's all 87% the same.

Action: Naruto has a lot of unique action, but sometimes it gets a bit too ridiculous (especailly when they introduced summonings and curse marks) Avatar has a more stylized action sequences with more realism that's heavily based in martial arts. I give a tie in this category.
Plot: Naruto has a great plot and follows it faithfully, but after the 5th or 6th season, it's all fillers, so it loses points for that. Avatar also has a great plot, and has a nice aang-zuko parallelism thing going, but it seems underdeveloped at times. I give this one to Avatar, just cause of the seasons of fillers in Naruto
Animation/Design: Naruto has some really nice animations, and their character designs, IMO, are top notch, very distinct, and memorable. Avatar has I'd say average animation, and it's character designs are pretty bad (especailly Aang's). Naruto easily gets the point for this category.
Character Develoment: Naruto has great character development, not only for the main character but also a lot of the other characters as well. And hands down, the best and my fav character is Naruto himself, a annoying rough-around-the-edges guy with a chip on his shoulder. Always persistant with a heart of gold that had to endure many hardships. Anyone that can't feel for the guy, basically has no soul. Ok, as for Avatar, the only good thing it has going for it is Zuko, the most well-developed character. As for the rest of the characters, I feel that a huge amount of untapped potential has been wasted. verdict: Naruto easily takes the point here
Final verdict: Both have thier ups and downs, neither is perfect but I like em both.
