Call me a cynic if you must, but I would have rather had Zuko realize feelings for Katara, then lose her to Aang, than be forced to choke down this Mai & Zuko relationship, at least then I could accept that at least there was a chance; I never really liked Mai, and the fact that she was part of a final pairing with Zuko leads me to believe I will probably never will...too bad, so sad.
Wow, you are seriously going to dislike Mai because of that. It is sad.......sad you think Mai isn't great for Zuko despite seeing all sorts of character development and overall dynamics between the two. And as for Mai, she's my favorite character. She's tough, cool, independant, strong willed, open minded and can hold her own in a fight against benders and non benders. She's a badass, theres no reason to hate since we've seen her faults and her weaknesses. Mai might have been a bit boring in first apperance, but she grew to be a likeable character, I hate it when Zutarians have hatred for this character just because as she claims it "not as highstrung and crazy as most people" She's unqiue.

    Mai:You Miscaculated.

hey im a zutarian and i like mai. now i did hate her at first and was furious that she got with zuko but after the boiling rock all the doubts i had about them vanished. zuko with his goofy smile when mai was mentioned, mai turning against azula. after that it was kinda hard for me to hate maiko even though i wanted to but they really are cute together.

i agree that katara was CERTAINLY not a gold digger, but i can see where that view might have arisen from - the lack of character development in the final episode! i mean, i loved the kick-ass fight scenes and bending, etc....but we didn't learn anything new about anyone! it's was pretty much just a culmination and huge character reunion which went exactly where we were expecting. Then katara kisses aang at the end as a kind of add-on-finish-off-the-series-by-finally-getting-them together! I'm a huge kataang fan, but i was seriously craving some katara-anyone talk about her feelings for aang (rather than the random kiss at the end)

Yes. The ending did feel abrupt and left almost unfinished in a way. There was hardly any character development at least from my perspective.

Aang had a bit the whole should i kill ozai thing and zuko did have some two with both the fighting azula alone and jumping in front of the lightning but that's about it but really what else is there i mean it was a battle there was nothing to say only a lot to do, although i do think avatar could have used 1 more episode as a sort of epilogue but they probably didn't because they want to keep the idea of a new season open

Remember, the finale was mainly about wrapping the storyline up. If a lot of new concepts were introduced, then the ending would have became rushed since there were plenty of other matters that need to be taken care of.

There was plenty of character development. The finale proved how much Aang had matured since the beginning of the series. Normally, he was an optimistic child who was oblivious to the ways of war. Now, he's down to earth (but still hopeful) and wise to understand the gravity of everything. The finale was fantastic evidence.

its not really an ending though azuala is going to break out i mean she is an insane, psychopathic, genius with incredible power, and the fire bending prisons don't seem that good (i mean a bender can use fire whenever) and zuko's mother where, the world is still in pretty much chaos, and did anyone else think the northern water tribe is full of panzies i mean they didn't help the war effort at all

I most definatly agree with the Azula getting out of jail thing. In fact, that was the first thought that popped into my head when she wasn't executed. "OMG she is going to escape." and that thought was followed by: "Wow, I should write a fanfic about that."

And as far as it ending, I suppose that some lines of the story were not "wrapped up" in a conventional sense, however they were left as open to interpretation with some strong hints as to where the series would go. Like how it is implied that Zuko will serch for and find his mother because of the scene with Ozai after his capture.

What really had me mad was that Mokky was never finalized. I mean COME ON, THE CHEMISTRY AND THE EVIDENCE WAS ALL THERE!!!!!

    MOKKY FTW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The thing about the ending is that no matter WHO Katara ended up with it was going to either PAINFULLY obvious, or a cliche. In the grand scheme of things I think I can stand obvious a bit more than obvious...but these two were the only reasonable partners, though I guess Jet and maybe Haru would be second tier. Lets just pair up Aang with Toph, Zuko with Katara, cast Mai to the wind and go with the time-honored cliche...any takers? Just Me? Kinda lonely out here.

actually no one would have worked. just becaue they make a good pair AKA zutara, doesn't mean it would have made for a good ending because they rushed the ship and it was very anti-climatic with no build-up whatsoever (from the characters) the shipping aspect of the show I have just expected that the writing is bad and to move on.

I agree, if what I am gathering is correct, that the story could have been resolved better, for everyone.

Here some reason why I feel the ending of Avatar so disconected; There is momment when zuko thought about katara's feeling more deeply than mai's feeling...I was hope at the end of the show there is momment when zuko try so hard to get to mai's feeling but there is no such momment but there are stupid ( from my point of view) when zuko made silly greeting to mai...

Thats your opinion. Katara and Aang are a much better couple than Zuko and Mai.

I like zuko with mai better and katara was obviously going to choose aang in the long run but i think there should have been a bit of a fling between katara and zuko

I can't even begin to fathom how much you people still miss the point of the final scene.

    1. Katara was confused because there was a war going on and she didn't feel it was time to get with Aang.

    2. Aang defeated the firelord which lead to

    3. The end of the war.

    Something beginning to gel here?

The end of the war = Katara's burden and confusion lifted = "nothing needs to be said, let's just get together."

Extra note: Also notice a common trend of each series finale. At the end of season 1, Aang and Katara were in each other's arms in a friendly way. At the end of season 2, Katara held Aang in a more personal way. Which brings us to the end of season 3, where they both hold each other in a romantic, loving way.

Oh yeah, what was that about "no build-up"?

    Try NEVER.

Zuko just didn't want Katara to hate him anymore, not because he liked/loved her, he loves Mai. Period.
