Ah, the age old art of trying to apply science to a fictional realm.?? Earthbenders are floating rocks around in the air.?? Explain that scientifically. ?? Waterbending doesn't have to make any sort of real world sense.?? If you're able to accept these characters are able to magically float water around through the air, you should be able to accept they can also use that water to cut metal and grab people. |
kinda like watching watching Godzilla and complaining about how its impossible??he can??breathe fire? yet you can accept??equally impossible??the fact that there's a 500 foot tall lizard stomping around...

Thank you! All this science mumbo-jumbo doesn't need to be involved. It's a cartoon...it's fiction! If Mike and Brian write it, it happens, regardless of whether or not it makes sense in a scientific way.
Making a water whip solid enough to grab people, and yet have it still be in liquid state... You can't really explain something like this in any scientific terms, and be all technical with it... It's a cartoon... Other characters in other cartoons/comics/whatever have also been able to do these kinds of things. Remember Pyro, from Marvel? He's able to manipulate fire in pretty much the same way that Katara's able to manipulate water. His fiery creations are also capable of becoming??"solid" fire, in that it is still fire, but it's a fire that can grab onto things (example: if he creates a fire hawk, it's able to physically swoop down, and grab onto something/somebody, and carry them away in its talons. Yet, this hawk is made purely of fire!), and Pyro's doing this purely through his ability to manipulate the fire. Katara's pretty much doing the exact same thing, except with water. She's just naturally able to bend the water like that, to form "solid water", to grab onto objects with.
As for being able to cut through metal with water, I'm suspecting that she's doing something similar with her bending: manipulating the water so that it has a certain degree of being "solid water", and then just using it to saw through the metal??in a??quick,??sharp, and precise??manner. When I saw "The Drill", I wasn't at all surprised that Katara and Aang were able to saw into the metal with their combined efforts in waterbending...

Ok everyone here is really trying hard to explain water bending and i gotta admit that a lot of hard brainstorming and research has been going on, unfortunatly its all being used w/o proper application. ?????????????? First off, yes, water uses H bonds which is one reason why water sticks together. But what hasn't been mentioned is that H bonds are extremely weak intermolecular bonds and broken quite easily. And the strength of and H bond isn't due to dipole dipole momments, they are relative to its bond distance and angle. Dipole dipole momments are what creats waters surface tension and does contribute to its strength to stick together, but again these are weak bonds and are constratly being broken and reformed. This is why when you belly flop off the high dive you get that initial *slap* then sink into the water feeling like an idiot. Also water CAN cut through metal, its just takes a couple hundred years of wear and tear. And yes water does expands when it freezes, but not enough to warp, bend, or even less so cut through metal. So the answer to your questions are: #1. Its a cartoon #2. Its a cartoon now please pretty pretty pretty please leave science out of the show!!! |
