On Monday, ComingSoon.net had a chance to sit down with filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan to talk about his new apocalyptic thriller The Happening, and while we didn't have a ton of time with the in-demand director, we did get to sneak in a couple questions about his next project M. Night Shyamalan's The Last Airbender.

Some might be familiar with the cartoon that aired on Nickelodeon for three years called "Avatar: The Last Airbender" set in a world that's divided up into elemental factions, two of whom are preparing for war. It's somewhat strange seeing Shyamalan's name attached to the film's working title, but Shyamalan explained why he wanted to do the movie and what he hoped to bring to it. "It was just the story. I just loved the story," he told us. "I loved the characters in the story and I felt like I could be me inside this larger canvas of this very long-form movie. I think it inherently had kind of family issues and serious larger topics--at the center, genocide--all kinds of stuff. Cultural differences at the center. It has Buddhism, Hinduism, things I'm interested in. It does have martial arts in a way that's not bang bang bang, but more about the person mastering yourself and the things that I love. I took martial arts for a long time. A ten-year-old at the center. That point of view felt good, like I could do my thing."

"It will be tough to keep it PG from PG-13," he said about doing a PG family film. "It will be tricky. I don't know how to make a PG movie so that's going to be much harder, because with R, everything was no problem."

When asked about the martial arts from the cartoon and how he planned on handling the action, he responded, "The great thing about it is it's almost like they don't ever really touch each other based in this world. They kind of do a form of manifesting something and then it comes at the other person and they manifest something. It'll be great to do it as extensions of what the characters are feeling, and there'll be much more CG."

Check back soon on our sister site ShockTillYouDrop for our full interview with Night talking about The Happening, which opens on Friday, June 13. The Last Airbender is scheduled for July 2, 2010.

If this is true, then please Shyamalan. Don't take the risk. GO for the PG-13!

I doubt it is because he was talking about keeping it PG, and since it's under Nickelodeon films they probaly won't let him make it PG13.

Shyamalan will need all his creative powers to not start a fandom riot with this film. I hope he does what he's capable of.

PG-13? Heh, that's pretty much right above the target audience, no? I'd love to see a sneak peek at how they're getting the bending done right. I'm not worried about Earth or Firebending, it's Water and Air that could be tricky. Maybe less so with Air if they do that effect used for bullet time.

You mean PG-13? Because Nick's first and second movies (Harriet the Spy, Good Burger) were rated PG. It wasn't until their third movie (The Rugrats Movie) that they made a G rated movie.

Nick would most likely try to turn it into a PG movie... Look at it this way though... Would the cartoon be considered PG or PG-13?

If this movie is PG-13, I will die happy.

I mean, the two most recent Harry Potter movies were PG-13, and that didn't stop kids from going. Believe me, I was unpleasantly surprised to find just as many children in the theatre.

I hope this comes to fruition, because it will show that they're not holding back.

That's because children have no idea what those ratings mean and their parents are idiots.

Case and point, when I was seeing "The Punisher" when it was in theatres, I saw a family with 2 kids who couldn't have been over the age of 10. What's worse, the parents didn't stop the kids from looking at the shooting and killing, but everytime their was so much as a kissing scene, the parents covered the kids' eyes.

That's so true. And yet, it doesn't make any sense; most kids aren't going to grow up to be murderers, but they are going to have sex. So why shield them from something that they are going to do?

I don't want my kids to grow up completely ignorant of sex; that's how bad things happen. Nor do I necessarily want to be the one to tell them about it though..

But yeah, I swear that some parents today are retarded (that doesn't mean any of the parents in this forum) either shield your kids from everything, or shield them from nothing. Make up your damn minds!

Interesting how sex is seen as a huge social taboo to discuss openly, yet in reality it's a part of life. Because of the taboo we get things like the pervert thread on this forum. But why is it a taboo?

He's spent far too much time in the Avatar in the minds of Adults thread. Which always was a funny name because I'm probably the only person above 18 that posts there. -_-

That's why it's called 'Teens/Adults'. Because we realise that the fact that we've only recently been exposed to this world of pervertedness, and we're not allowed to really 'try' it means that teens will usually be more perverted than adults.
