Last night i started watching season one, from The boy in the iceberg to Imprisoned, and i was really enjoying them, but something was wrong, i felt like i was enjoying them more than the new episodes. So i started to wonder why.

Let's talk about early episodes, specially "The Southern Air Temple", if you watch it you see all this mystery, depth and humor, that makes the series so great, but look at the way they FIGHT, look how is??hugely based on real martial arts, Zuko and Zhao actually have physical contact, look how the "camera" show us their movement, their feet moving on the ground creating fire, they were able to create great excitement with out showing incredible and colorful beams of light, or huge balls of fire. They concentrated on the martial arts, the movement of their bodies and the environment and music made it perfect!!

So what happened. Now they don't concentrated on the martial arts or the movement as much as they did, now everyone just throws their bending "whips" or huge fireballs that make the show lose some of it's realism. I would love to see the actually hitting each other on a fight, but instead the just attack from a great distance, and the few physical contact is followed by a huge explosion or something. Where is the art???

I understand this is a show made for kids, and kids enjoy big power balls more than fighting style and art, but don't you thing the show has become a bit exaggerated?? We don't want ridiculous powers or a new DBZ, do we?? OF COURSE NOT!!

I know they got much better on bending, therefore their attacks should be much powerful, but you don't need colorful fireballs to show the great power of a character, just imagine how cool would Zuko be if he fought as he did on TSAT, but with much more experience.

now don't get me wrong, "avatar" is my favorite show on tv, and i'm crazy about it, but i'm 17 and i think a bit more realism would make the show far more than perfect.

So what do you think, did they exaggerated the show to make young kids happy??

i really dont mind that they stopped it,i like martial arts,i even take it,but i think they might be trying to show off how well they have improved and new bending techniques

OMG yes! That's what it was! Thank you!?? I always thought something was a little "off" from season one to season two. I could just never put my finger on it. I do realize now that the fighting seems more realistic and cooler in the beginning then now. Its almost as if they put more effort (the characters) into their moves, like in TSAT, when Zuko and Zhao had their agnai kai. And yes, it was cool had they actually made contact and stood next to each other beating the crap out of each other, in TCoD, everyone must have been fighting like, 50 feet away from each other. I liked it when they had the fights where they were actually FIGHTING,??NEXT to each other. While its still fine fighting, I think it would make the show even better if they went back to doing the very well done martial arts combat where people actually touch each other. (When Katara got all up in Paku's face when she was fighting him is a good examle to, when she turned his little wall of ice into water and tried to punch him, that was good).

It's just because they were trying to introduce us to the bending styles in the very beggining of the show. At this point, all the characters are much better benders, and we already know what it looks like up close. They're just trying to make the fights exciting now. In "The Blind Bandit," The original style was shown, so we get a closer look at earthbending.

Now that I rewatch some of the episodes for season 1 you are right. The way the fought in season 1 should off the real fighting style that fire, earth, water, and air are based on.

Yea, but I like it how they mixed it up sometimes. Also in martail arts, one has to know when to keep their distance. I mean, if you had a gun (ranged) would you really walk all the way up to ur opponenet? Same with bending, if they can attacked ranged, they will to save thier skins.

I mostly agree. But also, if you learned a new move in martial arts, would you still keep using the same old ones?? Probably not. They DO need to show more REAL fight scenes ((Remember during Bato of the Water Tribe, when Aang and Zuko were fighting on/over the well?? AWESOME!!!)), but the characters are basically just showing off. They can do this new stuff, so they don't really revert back to moves like in the begining.

Im sorry to say this. But I think the whole show is going down. First the sucky animation of late season 2. And I think the first time I noticed the fights going down was in "The Serpents Pass", I mean the fights are the best thing about the show besides the storyline. And I do think that its getting to exaggerated. I mean "metal bending" come on its getting to much with that. It kinda fells like the people that do the show are getting lazy and just throwing together episodes. Its kinda sad to see the show taking a downfall

I find myself far more interested in the skills demonstrated than in the battles themselves. I keep trying to speculate about new talents and skills in other Avatar??? tv.com topics, but no one seems too interested in engaging me in a discussion.

Yea I do the main thing is because of the animation. What most of us call the "good aniamtion" is even bad. The show can have a good story and awesome fights but without the looks its worthless. I hope they go threw different animation companies next season.

Each move has its own place, though. And you can do just as much from up close with those "old" moves as you can with big new moves from a distance...if not more. Zuko hurt Aang a lot more in some of the Season 1 fights (Bato) with stuff up close than he did with fire whips and big blasts that Aang has plenty of time to dodge. The thing is, when someone's watching it, a giant fireball looks a lot "cooler" and more "powerful".

What did you enjoy more in the finale - Zuko whipping at Aang and missing completely, or Katara up close grabbing Azula with water and disabling her for a few seconds? That Katara moment was a lot better. And it was a lot better than the face-off sort of thing Azula and Aang had where they just sped at each other.

And I do agree with cg_619. The animation's going downhill, like with the face-off stuff. But when they want to deliver, they definitely deliver, as with Katara in The Earth King with her spinning water kick of death and doom.

Yeah and the animation is the other thing.
I mean WTF???? It looks so ugly on episodes like the chase, the guru, and the desert. it makes katara look like a monkey and sokka as a baby. I hate that animation what happened to the awesome animation seen on "Jet". I man katara looks disgusting on new episodes!!

Maybe... the show IS going downhill

Season 2 has had a much darker tone to it so they have to "exaggerate" the show in order to make younger kids happy. If younger kids don't watch it, Avatar doesn't really exist, because Nick isn't all interested in a show for teens and above, their main focus is kids. So if you're going to have "mature" concepts such as death and violence in a kids show, you need the added humor.

Sorry, Nick wasn't created to please anyone over age 12.

If I may ask, what the hell are you talking about?

The same animation companies did season 2 as season 1. The animation quality is still really high. There has really not been a drop. All the episodes of season 2 I believe were well animated, and I think season 1 might even be the weaker in animation because some are significantly lacking, though all still well-done nonetheless.

As for the fights going "downhill" since The Serpent's Pass...I disagree. Eps 16-20 all had at least one really good fight scene. And if I must say this again, it is a show on a kids network. You can say it stretches the bounds or whatever. But it is not immune to the decisions of the network, and if they deem something too inappropriate for a Nick show, they will ask them to re-do it.

For example, they had to change the fight scene with Jet, Aang and Long Feng near the end of Lake Laogai because of its violence....

so how was the original scene??
I bet it had more martial arts.

But seriously Pooldude, look into my eyes and tell me you did not like TSAT's fight style more than the "bending whips"

and about the animation, do you even watch the show??
C'mon man look at the desert!!!!
And in the newer episodes Katara looks disgusting, how can you even suggest that the animation on "JET" is at the same level than "the Desert" or "the Guru"???
