Okay, so this will seem VERY harsh, but I would have had either Aang, Zuko or Katara dying, but only one or the other, not more than one of them.
Here's why for each of them:
Aang: He is the last of his people, and if he had died saving the world, than we could look at the whole series as an acount of his life, rather than just his childhood. It would have made the series more about him than any of the other characters. It would literally bring the show's title soo much more meaning. Also, it would leave everyone gasping with a feeling of such emotional loss and disbelief that they would never be able to forget it, ever. It was that way with Yue, when she "died". So, it would actually make Aang more immortal in our minds if were to have died. Also, it would pretty much doom the Kataang ship and pretty much ensure Zutara's future. or...
Zuko: Now, I know this would totally destroy Zutara(of which I am a big fan), but when Zuko dived into the lightning to save Katara, I was like, "YES!" Not because I didn't like him, but because I thought that perhaps the writers were trying to leave us with that deep sense of sacrifice that Yue gave us. But, of course, they rarely do so. Then I was like, "well, maybe she will luv him cuz he saved her or somthin." But, it didn't happen. The whole point of his self-sacrifice was... well, there was no real point, except to let Katara do a little fighting. But in my opinion, it would have been cool if Zuko had died because it would be like his penance for all the evil he's done in his life. Like his self-sacrifice would have been his final restitution for all of his wrongs. Perfect, perfect, perfect plot option, but Bryke ignored it.
or...
Katara: Okay, so imagine this(it will be hard/painful for some people), imagine if all the shipping wars we've had between Zutara and Kataang for all these years suddenly collapsed into nothingness. Meaningless dust. Every pic, every post, every fanart concerning these two rival ships just vanished in a flash of lightning from Azula. And then, us loyalists who have battled for our ships for so long are left helplessly staring at our TV's with mouths hanging to the floor, dumbstruck with the shock of Katara's sudden death.... Wouldn't that be great? I mean, after we recovered from the mind-numbing blow, wouldn't it just be the most amazingly emotional web of feeling you had ever felt stop your heart, like... ever?? Kataangers wud b like, "the war's over... we didn't win?? But, but, but, we were ALWAYS supposed to win! That's why we supported the ship! Guaranteed victory!! WTHECK?!"
And we Zutarians wud be like, "the war's over... kataang didn't win??... Hurrray!!!... but we didn't win either, even tho we knew we never would.... but kataang's dead! Hurrrray!"
Yeah, and after the smoke settled, and the wounds healed, all that would be left would be a few scattered factions of minor ships and rogue anarchist aangzulians. HAHAHA, now that would be drastic, and drastic is soo much cooler than predictable.... but, once again, bryke ignored the option.
*sigh*
