How Avatar could've been better without Nick.

    Hello everyone,

I was just thinking about how much better the plot could've been if Avatar didn't have the restrictions that it has. The plot could've been darker, and a lot more interesting and deep. Some of the characters could have been a lot more interesting. For example, Sokka is pretty much limited to his role as the "smart guy who makes plans". He can't really do anything else. He had his episode where he developed his skills as a "swordsman" but if you think about it I seriously doubt he will be acutally doing anything with it. He can't actually fight anyone with it as then there would obviously be some sort of impalement or amputation, which would then be unsuitable to air on Nickelodeon.

So what are your thoughts, how could Avatar been a lot better if it didn't have Nick breathing down its back?

Post your scenarios, but please no 13-year-old hormone induced fantasies.

    Thanks

The main thing I could think of that would be better without Nick control would be the fact that they could show people dying, instead of the heavily implying that they die.

Yes Yue falls but her body vanishes. Zhao is killed by the livid Water Spirit, but the spirit just takes him and pulls him under. No holding him down until the bubbles stop. Just implying that he drowns.

The Professor most likely dies when the library is collapsed and pulled back into the Spirit World but we just don't know. And no one forget the Jet thing.

Well, uh... there wouldn't be a little nick logo in the corner?

And it wouldn't have commercials of Spongebob?

I'd have to bust out the lotion everytime it airs. Seriously, I want to see an episode where Zuko cripples Katara then leaves her in his Buffalo Bill-esque hole. Steamy erotic torture sex would be mandatory, all leading up the big moment: Eye socket intercourse. Then he leaves Katara's beaten and bruised body in Azula's sex-torture dungeon for some fun. What would Azula do with the remaining eye? IDK

This has been bandied about a bit in the past, but it's always interesting to look at. I doubt Nick had a lot to do with not showing deaths, blood, gore, etc. Check out this excerpt from an article on scifi.com that came out last year. http://www.scifi.com/scifiwire/index.php?category=0&id=40634&type=0

"DiMartino said that he and Konietzko love "serious and dramatic stories and believe you can do that without shocking violence." For example, the episode "Lake Laogai" deals with the nefarious Long Feng, who brainwashes Jet and eventually kills him-not the usual stuff of children's shows. Such dark moments are "written and directed in a very tasteful and dramatic way, where it's clear what's going on without having to show gratuitous violence," DiMartino said. "And we are always careful to balance the serious moments with humorous ones." "

It seems, according to Mike, that they chose to write it to not be overly graphic. Personally, since I watch this with my young daughter, I'm glad that it's not overly graphic.

I wonder what Shyamalan will choose to do with the movies. Will he choose to keep Bryke's sense of subtle censorship where it applies to violence? Or, since it's live action, will they take it up to more of a Lord of the Rings level?

    I agree.

But what I was getting at were roles of some characters, such as the Sokka example.

No, they wouldnt have. Bryke said they werent even done with the finale, and that they still have about 2 more weeks before they are finished. There is nothing the Nick can do about that.

But think without Nick...there would be no Avatar...Nick is tha one who thought Avatar the last airbender was a great idea for a show...they are the ones who decided to renew tha show for a Second and Third Season...plus if it was on another channel i dont think as many ppl would have watched it or got into tha show as much...so u cant say Nick is doing a bad job or that Avatar would be better off because of them we have a great show tht everry one here loves...and it is called Avatar the Last Airbender

so we should be thanking Nick...THANKS NICK!!!

And the advertising would be better. That's pretty much it though. If you want sex, violence, just look around you, it's everywhere in our would today. Do we really need to incorporate everything we are entertained with with our own world's problems. So what there's no blood, no on-screen killing, no sex, no drugs (though the Cactus juice was a drug) dose that really take away from the story. Essentially avatar is about love, and it's ability to over come even the hardest of problems and the story tellers tell it so well that I believe that all these "mature" things would detract from everything avatar is trying to show. Honestly I don't think the lack of blood, sex, drugs, and violence are 100% contributed to the shows network, I think it would be much of the same show anywhere else (and avatar how it is now is the show I love and the show I intend to tune into until it's over).

Well... first my mommy and daddy got divorced... and then there was that horrible military camp that turned my into a republican...

But I think it really started with the 2004 elections...

That day... my mission in life was to hunt down and pie John Kerry in the face.

And that's why they call me Mikiel!
