Maybe it could have it's own network?

    Hello everyone,

I was just thinking about how much better the plot could've been if Avatar didn't have the restrictions that it has. The plot could've been darker, and a lot more interesting and deep. Some of the characters could have been a lot more interesting. For example, Sokka is pretty much limited to his role as the "smart guy who makes plans". He can't really do anything else. He had his episode where he developed his skills as a "swordsman" but if you think about it I seriously doubt he will be acutally doing anything with it. He can't actually fight anyone with it as then there would obviously be some sort of impalement or amputation, which would then be unsuitable to air on Nickelodeon.

So what are your thoughts, how could Avatar been a lot better if it didn't have Nick breathing down its back?

Post your scenarios, but please no 13-year-old hormone induced fantasies.

    Thanks

yes the plot could have been darker, but nick provides stuff that a smaller company cant really provide. big money, tools, and ads. nick may seem to hate avatar, but really they are just money hungry. they dont hate avatar because they have put so much money into avatar that it would be a huge loss if they didnt continue to air it.

if avatar had its own network it would have probably struggled a lot. animation isnt cheap and niethier is anything else in the cartoon buisness. in my opinion it is good that nick has avatar because you can be assured that avatar wont stop airing episodes or selling dvds due to financial troubles. of course i still hate nick for making us wait so long

I think Avatar would have had a lot more propaganda and a lot more new episodes showing if it would have been aired in Cartton Network (nothing against Disney Channel, but it's not the type of show they would air).
But I don't think the plot would have been much different, it is the way the creators want it to be, and as I want it to be lol XD

This has been bandied about a bit in the past, but it's always interesting to look at. I doubt Nick had a lot to do with not showing deaths, blood, gore, etc. Check out this excerpt from an article on scifi.com that came out last year. http://www.scifi.com/scifiwire/index.php?category=0&id=40634&type=0

"DiMartino said that he and Konietzko love "serious and dramatic stories and believe you can do that without shocking violence." For example, the episode "Lake Laogai" deals with the nefarious Long Feng, who brainwashes Jet and eventually kills him-not the usual stuff of children's shows. Such dark moments are "written and directed in a very tasteful and dramatic way, where it's clear what's going on without having to show gratuitous violence," DiMartino said. "And we are always careful to balance the serious moments with humorous ones." "

It seems, according to Mike, that they chose to write it to not be overly graphic. Personally, since I watch this with my young daughter, I'm glad that it's not overly graphic.

I wonder what Shyamalan will choose to do with the movies. Will he choose to keep Bryke's sense of subtle censorship where it applies to violence? Or, since it's live action, will they take it up to more of a Lord of the Rings level?

I agree. But what I was getting at were roles of some characters, such as the Sokka example.

Except for some rare cases (example, the swimsuits in the beach) I really don't think that Nick affected the story/characters of Avatar. Check out this interview with Bryke. They talk a little about how Aaron Ehasz (writer) persuaded them to make Iroh less of a military, "kung-fu sifu" hard a** and be the fun loving, caring Iroh we know. Ehasz is also the one (according to the article) that suggested to Bryke to make Toph a little girl, instead of a big burly guy. The article also says how much Bryan was against the idea, but then came aboard and loved it. They didn't say anything specifically about Sokka, though I think that saying changes in characters would have from Bryke and team could be supported from the above two examples. Plus, of all the characters from the unaired pilot, Sokka is the one the remained the most similar, IMO. Even Katara changed names

Nick's affect on the show I really think comes in promotional support and continuing to air it on the main channel so that it wouldn't be forgotten about. I think it's great that they are now promoting the new episodes, a whole 2 months before their air dates, so they may be redeemed somewhat for that. I'm not going to pretend to know what Nick should have done, because I don't know what they based their decisions on (plus, I don't know the first thing about marketing a television show, so it's not like I'm qualified to judge )

Side note: I do see where you're going with Sokka. I do wish that Sokka had a bit more impact in the group and the show. But I think that was addressed a bit this season, especially in Sokka's Master.

Never thought of that, but that is actually very true. Down with Spongebob.

No, they wouldn't have. Bryke said they weren't even done with the finale, and that they still have about 2 more weeks before they are finished. There is nothing the Nick can do about that.

Actually the episodes do take roughly 9 months to make, and there was a time when they said they weren't done with the finale, but I'm pretty sure they have finished it for a while now, or else they wouldn't have been able to show the NYCC trailer.
