    O... kay...

    Snapping back into English now. I think that Aang is the Avatar, so he actually CAN bend other stuff than air. Many people, including me, firmly believe that air is an element. A popular theory is that it is so beacuse it says "Water, earth, fire, air," at the beginning.

    The same can be said about water and Earth. No element is truly pure. It just has to do with the energy it posseses.

    Ummm... water is not an element: its made of 2 hydrogen n 1 oxygen
    earth is not an element: made of carbon, calcium, little bit of iron, copper, etc (i dont know every single componenet)
    fire is not an element, its not even composed of elements. its a chemcial reaction of a fuel n oxygen turining into carbarbon dioxide n water

    Wikipedia is your friend.

    Ancient people were very wrong about a lot of things.

    every person would understand that you quoted this out of a science book... pls dont act like ur that smart??

    anyways, i always thought that the whole idea of an ''avatar'' has been created by the old Greeks, just like the idea of the 4 elements. ofcourse, just like uve pointed out, this isnt right, but the fact that they are using freaking ''tanks'' and still fight with arrows at the same time is also pretty weird isnt it? just dont think to much about these things, cause just like someone else already said: its the avatar show! its an animation, not realistic (except the emotions of the characters ofcourse).

    Element is a very vague term in the bending world, and definitely not a science so shouldn't be reduced to numbers etc. Also, I love Avatar so if there are any continuity errors or whatever, I suggest you suppress the urge to dwell over them as you are doing the show an injustice (if you are a fan - which I guess you are as you're on this site) by trying to find faults.

    I hope your advanced classes don't involve too many essays or you'd be fubar'd.

    this is absolutely true. in ancient japan they tought that the world was based upon these four elements so this is not about chemistry. they are the elements of the world.

    The elements in the Avatar world represent four different mind sets, ways of life, and fighting styles. Also, the four elements in their "pure" forms are the four states of matter:
    Air=Gas
    Water=Liquid(In "pure" form)
    Earth=Solid
    Fire=Plasma

    I despise that excuse. Someone had to imagine it, somehow. The mere fact that there have been so many science showdowns, as you call them, is because the creators did a good job of finding behaviors plausible or relatable to life as we may know it.
