Given that water is made of hydrogen and oxygen, it would stand to reason that waterbenders could do a small amount of airbending seeing as both those elements are found in "air"

Ummm... water is not an element: its made of 2 hydrogen n 1 oxygen
earth is not an element: made of carbon, calcium, little bit of iron, copper, etc (i dont know every single componenet)
fire is not an element, its not even composed of elements. its a chemcial reaction of a fuel n oxygen turining into carbarbon dioxide n water

ur totally making the rest of us look retarted.
I feel like this alot...Mostly during Math class though....

maybe why i was always asleep. math and some science are totally different lanuages, and i am not good at it.

would i be wasting my time if i said that the whole art of bending involves a huge amount of spirituality, that mixed with science is a never ending circle of arguments. good luck troops.

Besides, current scientific thought says that 90% of an atom's volume is empty space anyway...SO... most things are just empty anyhow.

How hard can it be to manipulate empty space?

Have you ever thought about spell check????

Okay, I'm just gonna ask this: WHAT PART OF AVATAR IS 'SCIENCE-Y'??!!?!

They had a boy stuck in an iceberg for 100 years((And ALIVE!!)); they have a spirit world((Not exactly provable)); they fight using the??((original))??elements((In the past, which this show is supposed to be at least partially set in, even the learned people believed in the four elements-Earth, Air, Fire, and Water. So BITE ME!)); they have crazy animal transgenic-mutant things...((Would you want to run into a platypus-bear in a dark alley??)); they have reincarnation ((Again, not scientifically provable)); they have multipule gods and goddesses ((We can't even prove the christian god exists))....

The show follows little to no scientific principles. Get over it.

Why do people care so much about the science in Avatar. The season finale is tomorrow and all people can do is argue about the science of Avatar?

Just grab a bong, and a lighter, and relax. Then no matter what you see, hear, or believe....it'll all make sense.

every person would understand that you quoted this out of a science book... pls dont act like ur that smart?? anyways, i always thought that the whole idea of an ''avatar'' has been created by the old Greeks, just like the idea of the 4 elements. ofcourse, just like uve pointed out, this isnt right, but the fact that they are using freaking ''tanks'' and still fight with arrows at the same time is also pretty weird isnt it? just dont think to much about these things, cause just like someone else already said: its the avatar show! its an animation, not realistic (except the emotions of the characters ofcourse).
?? Ummm lets see you don't have to be that smart to figure out i copy it!!!! DUHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!I mean come on you really think i would this ????? I a smart but not that smart to remember this !!

DUH! It was aristotle or some dead greek who classified matter into the four main ones. By the way, the chinese did something similar at roughly the same century. Everyone knows air is not a single element by the term that an element indicates a mixture of a single type of atom. But water is Hydrogen and Oxygen too, and it's almost impossible to get all the other minute amounts of stuff out of it. Earth is mainly solid oxygen, plus iron, nickel, and THOUSANDS of other ingredients! Fire, is not even CLOSE to an element. It is the result of a chemical reaction between elements. Combustion is the result of heat and oxygen rapidly reacting with other materials. So yeah, air is not a true scientific element, but niether is earth, water or fire.
You should really read the other posts, we have gone through all of that already.
Oh i know ....at some poitn they become really annoying ..but i just wanted to make this point what air really is ..it all starter with people asking why the added other abilies to fire and why not fire...maybe this is why?
