yeah I'm confused cause Oma and Shu, the people whom the city of Omashu is named after, learned earthbending by watching them badger moles. So if they could just pick it up so quickly, however did it become a genetic thing passed from one generation to another? Maybe they were always genetically gifted that way, but Oma and Shu were just the first to find the gift within themselves?

Maybe there are more than four elements to be controlled but the fifth hasn't been discovered by those who posses it! Possible?

It's a bit of mysticism and evolution.?? It's like the idea that the child of a person with great magical strength will also be possessed of similarly great magical strength.?? Many real legends have similar concepts of learning some skill from an animal or spirit as well.?? Like learning how to make cloth from a spider.

I think that the Oma and Shu story happened very long ago, when people were only first discovering bending. Now every person in every kingdom knows about bending, it has become common knowledge.
With this in mind, the odds of a new type of bending being discovered are extremely small.

It is possible mind you, i just can't imagine what they would bend. Monkeys maybe?

You don't see anyone shoting laser beams from their eyes do you? Light could be another "element".

Falcondude123, Maybe bending is not genetic, who to say all earthbenders are descended from Oma and/or Shu.

I didn't say all earthbenders are descended of Oma and Shu. I said maybe they were the first of their people to find that they had the gift. After Oma displayed her earthbending skills, maybe people everywhere started realizing that they had the gift too. That's the whole point of my idea, there could be peoples who have the gift of another type of bending inside of them but they haven't learned to harness it yet, just like Oma and Shu hadn't harnessed it until they met up with those badger moles.

I do like your light idea, that would be a cool element to bend. Perhaps there are metal-benders as well; too bad they weren't around in "the drill".????

People seem to be born with the gift to bend; they just need to realize it. These things usually happen by accident.
"Oma, did you see what that creature did?!" "Yes! Hmmmmm -- I -- won-der..."

There are plenty of "elements" around that aren't bendable by the current bending disciplines, such as: Metal, Light, Plants (bendable via the water in them, but not actually bendable), Glass, Heat, Oil, and Gas (as in flammable gases).

However, it is not likely that new bending disciplines will come about because the show is based on four elements and the balance between them.

It is possible, I think, that there are other elements, but I find it highly unlikely. First, the bending arts were learned thousands (possibly millions) of years ago, considering how many past Avatars there were (there were a lot of them). And it would be weird if another element just popped up out of nowhere after so many years had passed. Second, the show is just based off of 4 elements and I think it would make the show more confusing than it already is, and we don't need that . Your theory is interesting, though.

Sure "gift" ok. Sure metalbender why not, it even been mentioned as a desired bending ability in the show. As well a light I also figure time and life could be ???bent???. What kind of animal could teach these skills, lets see: for light it would have the be the blinding-tree, for time the clockturtle, and for life it would have the be the hypnotoad of course.

Maybe the spirit of Mars could teach people how to bend metal, after all, it has a VERY high iron content doesn't it?

Time bending would be sweet but it wont happen. The show is just based on the 4 elements and nothing more.

sandbending is a subdivision of earthbending. it even says so on the Nick.com Avatar site.??if you didn't know, sand is crushed up rock and quartz. the vine bending was done by waterbenders, who manipulated the water inside of the vines. but we do not know whether or not it can be done to all plants because vines have a higher concentration of water than most plants.

Light and Shadowbending, to sides of the same coin, pure expressions of the manipulation of positive and negative Chi, respectively.
