I think Katara kissed him back because it was her real first kiss (which means it was meant as a real kiss, not an escape like Cave Of two Lovers.) She kissed back, and it looks as if she is sad, but she might be sad because he told her now, when they're about to die, or she doesn't feel the same way. I go with #2. I think that she might not feel the same way. People keep saying its because he might never come back, but right before he kisses her she says "Aang, don't say that, of course you'll".... She even denied it. And she had some time to spare before he flew off like that. If she really did feel the same way she would look him straight in the eyes, and tell him quick, hug (or kiss....) and then he would leave, with her looking at him, sadly.

If she loved him the same way:
Aang: What if I don't come back?
Katara: Aang, don't say that, of course you'll...
*kiss*
Katara: *kissy face* *looks him in the eyes.*
Katara: Aang! Wait, I love you....
Aang: *pauses* *both kiss* *hug* Both: *I love you*
Aang: *flies off*
Katara: *happy tear in her eyes and smiles, while blushing.*(well maybe with out the smiles)

Really! Like I said, before some Zutarians will give up Katara and Aang basically have to do something drastic like take their clothes off in front of each other. That's just how some Zutarians are. (Please note the use of the word some and how I didn't say Zutarians in general)

I get sick of that too. My mom has seen every single episode with me short of Book 3 Chapter 6. I asked her if the "motherly" end scene of Katara laying Aang down on the bed and she responded quote vehemently "No, she just cares!" This is why if you show that DOBS kiss to someone who has never seen the show, they're wrong no matter what they say because they have NOT seen the show. Period. They have not seen everything developing between Katara and Aang. I have. My mom has. The people that watch Avatar have. Even if you support Zutara, it's still silly to deny that Katara and Aang's relationship is developing in the story, whatever the outcome.
