    Happy Singles Awareness Day!

V-Day has gotten way out of hand. When Nickelodeon starts doing marathons on V-Day you know its gotten out of hand. More than half the kids that watch that network have never had a b/f or g/f. It's a holiday created by the greeting card industry to make singles feel out of place in our society. Damn Hallmark...

I've heard that a million times today.

lol that's funny...seriously tho...even if I had someone, I doubt I'd do much of anything for V-Day...but then Feb. 15th rolls around and you're single again

Hey... let's get back on topic here.

I was browsing through Borders bookstore today, enjoying a little "me" time, when I came across the first Avatar Cine-Manga. It was just the pilot episode, BUT the last few pages were devoted to detailed descriptions of the peoples of the various nations, and it had some info on bending that I'd never seen before! I didn't really see any new info on waterbending though.

So here, straight from Cine-Manga, is some new (to me, anyway) info on AIr/Fire/Earthbending:

    - In the Water, Earth and Fire nations, there are benders and non-benders (as we all know). However, ALL Air Nomads are benders. This puts an end to some of those theories that maybe there were non-bending air nomads who managed to survive and escape somewhere. If they're out there, they're benders.

    - Firebenders have powerful attacks but very few defensive maneuvers. (Makes sense.)

    - Firebenders lose their powers during solar eclipses.
This, too makes sense, but it's interesting that this was specified... makes me wonder if there's an eclipse in the show's future?

    - Firebenders cannot bend underwater (duh!). Their powers are also weaker when it's raining.

    - OK, this one kind of freaked me out: Earthbenders can apparently manipulate magnetic fields in rocks and minerals, including the minerals in their own bones. The book said that they "can magnetize their limbs to stone", enabling them to do weird things like climbing up cliffs and stuff!

Is this an official source? I'm sorry, but I'm skeptical thanks to numerous "'canonical' Star Trek versus non-canonical" discussions that I tried to follow more than 15 years ago.

Ok I have to bring this argument back up... THE BENDING GENETICS *everyone groans* How is it that ALL the air nomads ARE benders, and the water/fire/earth benders are not? Somehow I feel that SOME science has to be involved here, because the whole spiritual thing isn't quite answering the question as well as the punett square does.

I not saying there's no spiritual aspects involved but I think that air bending is a purely dominate trait, and well I really don't have an explaination on the other elements. There probably heterozygous. Yeah my mind can't think outside the box right now after my bio teacher DRILLS all this junk into our skulls

Another question... If firebenders temporarly lose there powers during a solar eclipse, do waterbenders lose there powers during a new moon?

Waterbenders don't loose their powers during a full moon. I think in the Siege of the North episode, they said their powers became stronger.

What about a new moon (moon only reflects a small amount of sunlight back to earth)? What about a lunar eclipse (shadow of the earth on the moon)?

In the episode Spirit World, the earthbending soldiers scooted down a hillside to retrieve Iroh. Now I can call that magnetic levitation. Actually, I still like to call that scooting.

    okay here another queastion
we all know that the moon makes waterbenders strong at night and the sun makes firebenders strong
but what makes air and earthbenders strong
...and why do they call them elements??
    fire isn't one....

I don't recall anything in there about lightning, which is a shame. The page about airbenders was very specific in saying that all air nomads are benders unlike the other nations. Maybe they originally lived within the earth kingdon, and if they could airbend, they became nomads??

    A couple more tidbits...

    - It said something about airbenders being the most spiritual, which isn't really new info.

    - You all probably have figured this one out already from watching the show. It said that the air/earth/water people are more agrarian but the Fire Nation has been going through an industrial revolution (thus all the gadgets), contributing to their sense of superiority over the other nations.

I think you got your phases backwards. I said the new moon which is when you cannot see the moon at night. A full moon is when you can see the enitre moon at night. But if firebenders temporary lose there powers during a solar eclipse (sun is blocked out) then do the waterbenders lose there powers during a New moon when the moon is gone?? Like they did when the moon spirit was killed. And if anyone was wondering (I saw a thread about this at nick.com) that why katara didn't use her healing powers on the fish.
