The SpongeBob Community Discord (SBC Chat) is an official chat server originally created by Mr. Dr. Professor Patrick and now owned by Jjs. It is based on the Discord chat platform. It was founded on June 28th, 2016, and was officially made a part of SBC on February 10th, 2018.

The SBC Discord was originally created as a counterpart to SpongeCraft Classic, although it has expanded and become a successor to the aging SBC Xat, which was declared unofficial in January 2014, and which was later abandoned entirely in favor of Discord. With a steadily-increasing number of users, the Discord server has grown to become the main hub of socialization on SBC, with (as of September 1st, 2024) a total of 109 users and 6 bots (Starboard, UnbelievaBoat, Chuu, Breadfish, Birthday Bot and Tupperbox). There are 4 chat categories and 1 archive category. (check below for more details) Discord can run on various platforms, such as Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS. Alternatively, you can access Discord with the web app, available here.

Categories & Channels

SBC

  • #rules-and-announcements - A read-only channel that hosts the introductory post and important announcements. It is the only channel new members are allowed to see before they are let in.
  • #sbctopicfeed - A read-only channel that automatically posts when a new thread is created on SBC.
  • #sbc-games - A channel used to organize SBC games and events. Originally made due to issues regarding the SpongeBob Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune, Dunces and Dragons, and SBC Music rooms, the #jeopardy channel was created on August 17th, 2018. On August 18th, 2018, #jeopardy was renamed to #duncesanddragons for the Dunces and Dragons game that would take place later in the day. On August 25th, 2018, the channel was renamed to #sbc-games to host games until the revamped rooms were finished. It was made read-only and archived on September 16th, 2018, due to the new game rooms having been finished. The channel was later resurrected on February 28th, 2021 for March Madness 2021 to promote and play SBC games, staying a permanent channel ever since. This marks the first time a formerly archived channel was brought back to life.
  • #spongecraft-frontiers - Contains the in-game chat of SpongeCraft Frontiers and any general discussion or updates about the game. The bot Breadfish sends messages between the channel and the in-game chat.
  • #secretbox - A channel visible to Loyal Customers only. It is used for sneak peaks, updates and suggestions.
  • #secreterbox - A channel only visible to Nitro Boosters.
  • #staff - Visible to staff only. Used for staff discussion. It has essentially replaced the Staff Lounge.
  • #stafflogs - Visible to staff only. Logs from the UnbelievaBoat go here for permanent record.

Conch Street

  • #general - The main channel for discussion and most things happening on the chat. This is the most commonly-used section, and most discussion goes here, including discussions pertaining to the site itself.
  • #spongebob - A channel for discussing SpongeBob. It was created on September 19th, 2018, due to SpongeBob discussions clogging up #general and #tv-and-film.
  • #animation - A channel for discussing animation. This channel was created on March 20, 2019 due to animation-related content, such as Ren and Stimpy, becoming a popular topic on #spongebob.
  • #dapit - A channel primarily dedicated to posting memes. Originally named #nsfw, this channel began its life as a subsection for more mature content, and generated controversy due to sexually-explicit conversations between minors and adults occurring, leading to it being redirected in focus and recommissioned as #dapit in October 2018.
  • #davent - The channel for venting and discussing personal issues happening in your life.
  • #starboard - The channel used for the Discord’s starboard. The starboard is a list of posts that were reacted to with a star 6+ times, which is used on posts that people like. It is considered a successor to the Archives thread.

Bottom Feeder

  • #da-art - A channel for posting drawings and art. It was added due to most members' art being posted in #dapit.
  • #writing - A channel for discussing writing, literature and your own SBC writings. It was first added for Spin-Off Festival 10.
  • #music - A channel for discussing music and sharing music. #music also has its own voice channel, discussed more in depth below.
  • #tv-and-film - A channel used to discuss both TV and film. This channel was added due to the high amount of discussion about both subjects on the chat.
  • #vidyagames - A channel used to discuss video games.
  • #politics - A channel used to discuss political news and topics. It was created on April 10, 2019 due to the high amount of political discussion happening in #general at the time.

Electric Zoo

It was created on August 13th, 2018 due to the Discord deciding that SpongeCraft chat via the SpongeCraft bot should be in its own separate channel, instead of clogging up #general. It was temporarily read-only in September 2018 due to faulty SpongeCraft upgrade tests. After SpongeCraft shut down on September 19th, 2019, the channel was briefly used for shit-posting, before being archived on December 27th, 2019.
  • #pokemanz - The channel for using the Pokecord bot, which was added by popular demand. The channel name was coined by sbl. It was closed and archived on February 12, 2019, due to lack of activity.
  • #atfinale - A channel used to discuss and watch the Adventure Time finale. It was created on September 3rd, 2018, the day of the finale. It has since been moved to the archives category.
  • #trash - After complaints about the sexual nature of the NSFW channel, the #trash channel was instated as a channel for spam, Doubloons are not gained for posting in #trash, as it is seen as a channel used for miscellaneous content. The channel name was coined by sbl. It was closed and archived on October 14, 2018.
  • #doubloons - A channel created for checking your saved doubloon balance. You can check your balance by using Karen's "k!amount" command. It was closed and archived on September 24th, 2018, due to the doubloon commands no longer working.
