She's a Major Character put on the back burner.

I would say she's one of the main characters, though less important than all the others.

I'd say she is the fourth main character in the first season, after SpongeBob, Squidward, and Patrick.

She's the fifth main character in seasons two, three, and four after SpongeBob, Patrick, Squidward, and Mr. Krabs.

In seasons five and six, she takes another step behind Plankton. In fact, at this point, I'd say she is more of a supporting character, tied with people like Mrs. Puff.

Of course she's a main character, but like talonmalon said, she's not as important and can be compared to other minor characters. I still love her though
