    Squidward is just the serious, yet boring character. I've also noticed that once he actually starts to have fun, Spongebob and Patrick are either done playing or bored.

    That's completely correct. That was how his character was designed to be, not the fun, enjoyable type.

    I think Squidward is miserable because of a near fatal fan accident. He used to have all eight of his tentacles. He was swimming around the ocean, as happy as could be. He was peacefully swimming going, "La-la-la-la-la". He was suddenly caught on a fishing hook and hoisted onto the surface. He was squirming with the sailors and flew off the boat. He fell near the fan and two of his tentacles were cut off. He then lost his ability to swim and was very upset about it. He started to lose his talent for painting and playing the clarinet. He lost his hair and he started dressing casually. Then he started being grumpy all the time and hated everyone. Spongebob mostly because of his cheery attitude.
