I have decided to make a list of my top 50 modern Spongebob episodes, however, I will not be including any season 4 episodes as most of the episodes would probably come from there. It's also because I haven't seen many Season 4 episodes in a while. I will also be excluding season 9 episodes, as I have not seen every season 9 episode yet. Lastly, I won't be including sand castles in the sand, otherwise, it will be obvious which episode will be first.

Whilst finding these episodes, I noticed that there are actually a lot of good modern episodes between seasons 5-8. In fact, I managed to find a total of 77 good modern episodes between these seasons.

    #50: Shellback Shenanigans

In this episode, Plankton disguises as Gary to help get a Krabby Patty. I though that this episode actually had quite a few laughs, likewhen the nurse said that Gary was still in the room taking tests, and the doctor replies: "That's not what I'm saying" or Plankton as Gary taking the pill. Also, it was nice to see that Spongebob actually cared about "Gary" , which is a step up from the terrible "A Pal for Gary" This episode isn't higher in the list because the plot where Plankton disguises as someone is used once again, and it is now the third time in this season where this basic plot has been used. Also, the beginning of the episode was a bit slow.

#49: 20000 Patties Under the Sea

In this episode, Spongebob and Patrick travel in a submarine to bring food to costumers. I liked this episode because of the idea of bringing the food to the costumers. I liked the scene where the boy asks Plankton about the different flavours of food Plankton was selling. The insults that Plankton was giving the boy and his family were jokes which actually made me laugh. Jack M. Crazyfish's cameo was random but funny to see, the sea monster mistaking a filthy Plankton for a chocolate ?clair was quite clever, and overall not a bad episode. However, the episode did get quite boring at times and it took a couple minutes for the plot to get started. The ending was quite silly and annoying and made the episode a waste of time.

    #48: The Inmates of Summer

In this episode, Spongebob and Patrick accidentally end up on a prison camp rather than a summer camp. The prison warden was a great character. It really looked like sergeant Sam Roderick from "Mrs. Puff, You're Fired" got an upgrade. He was funny because of how strict he was and some of the punishments that he gave Spongebob and Patrick even know they didn't do anything wrong. But this works well because Spongebob and Patrick aren't harmed in any way, and the way that they get out of the punishments is also quite funny. The play at the end was also verygood and it was great to see. Even the ending was quite funny when Patrick said that he liked the other boat better, showing that even in modern Spongebob episodes, Patrick's stupidness can at times be funny. I would've like to have seen more of this sun fun Island camp and see the similarities and differences between the two camps. But It's a good episode as it is.

    #47: Squidward In Clarinet Land

In this episode, Squidward shares a locker with Spongebob, and finds a world for clarinets. I like this episode because it is actually creative. Yes, even in the worst season of Spongebob, there are still some creative episodes. It was funny to see all of the weird and wacky effects and different lands which Squid ward had to go through, It felt like a fun episode. The ending was funny too, when Squidward was afraid of Spongebob even know he wanted to give him his clarinet. The weaknesses are that it took most of the episode for Squidward to get into clarinet land. Spongebob's laughs were quite annoying and some sounded repeated, everything turned out to be just a dream, and never happened. But despite that, I think that this was one of the most decent episodes from season 7.

    #46: Blackjack

In this episode, Spongebob's cousin is released from prison. I thought that this episode was decent and quite interesting. I like the way that the writers built everything up to the climax, and makes the audience want to keep watching. I guessed I also liked the twist ending, it was unexpected, but I didn't quite get it. It was clever how every thing that Spongebob found to be bad during the episode was explained in the ending. This episode isn't higher in the list, because Spongebob spends a while at uncle Captain Blue's, and kinda holds the episode back, but that could just be the writers wanting the audience to watch the episode right to the ending. A decent episode, and another good thing is the fact that there wasn't much violence in this episode.

#45: For Here or to Go

In this episode, Plankton wins a Krabby Patty in a competition at the Krusty Krab. This episode was quite funny, I got a couple of laughs at the beginning of the episode, where everyone was failing to guess how many bun seeds there were in the jar. One person said "Mermaid Man" and other people said other random things. I guess I also found "The Show" to be quite amusing. It was funny with Spongebob accidently making it easier for Plankton to get his Krabby Patty. However, the episode did get boring at times, and some parts went very slowly. It also took a while to get into the main plot of the episode. I also don't know why Karen was being silly in the end, you would think that she would analyse the Krabby Patty in Plankton's stomach, but instead analysed everything else in there. But despite all that, I thought that this was a pretty good episode.

    #44: Slimy Dancing

In this episode, Spongebob, Squidward and Patrick participate in a dance contest. This episode isn't that bad, I liked Squidward's audition for the dance contest. Everyone seems to be in character in this episode, like Squidward thinking that he's the boss and instructing Spongebob. Some of the people's talents were fun to watch and quite creative. The gag of characters getting cramps was good, and Spongebob flopping around and the audience liking it towards the end was okay. I did like the way that Squidward and Spongebob didn't win the trophy for that, otherwise, I think that that would've been a pretty dull ending, but the ending does have a very good twist, and it definitely isn't the most expected Spongebob endings. The episode also has an epilogue, and it was quite funny to see every character doing their cramp dance, but I really didn't think that this was necessary at all. I thought that it was just to fill up the last 30 seconds of the episode, or something like that, but apart from that, I still thought that this was a pretty decent episode.

    #43: Blackened Sponge

In this episode, Spongebob gets a black eye. This episode was really interesting, some of the stories that Spongebob made up, in order to get away with himself looking like a tough guy were great. Patrick was also well in character and was like he was in the pre-movie episodes, actually caring about Spongebob, showing that Patrick isn't always a complete idiot, even in the modern episodes. It was also pretty cool how Jack M. Crazyfish turned out to be real in the end, it was funny that Spongebob was scared and suprised by this, and a nice twist for the ending. I'm also glad that there wasn't much violence in this episode, especially when Jack M. Crazyfish turned out to be real. There we're also no real gross moments, unlike terrible episodes like "The Splinter" or "Fungus Among Us" A great episode for season 5.

    #42: Suction Cup Symphony

In this episode, Squidward makes a symphony. Surprisingly enough, there are some good episodes even from season 6 of Spongebob, and this one was quite decent. This episode also uses a basic plot and it actually works, like some classic episode such as "Procrastination" Squidward trying to write his symphony, but getting distraction from Spongebob and Patrick. It was also funny how Squidward wrote everything he heard without even realising, and I also liked the way that the symphony turned out well for Squidward, and the crowd wasn't booing, just because it was Squidward. However, some of the things that Spongebob and Patrick were doing seemed quite stupid and at times, violent. Sometimes it made it look like they were deliberately trying to find different ways to distract Squidward to prevent him from finishing off his symphony. But I guess at the same time, what they were doing was quite funny and I guess the "Swelled head" joke kinda worked too.

    #41: Earworm

In this episode, Spongebob gets a song stuck in his head. I know that a lot of people really don't like this episode, but I actually found it to be quite good. Again, it uses a nice simple plot, which in my opinion, worked well, and also Spongebob's behaviour and reaction towards the song were quite funny, the way his holes even started to sing, and Spongebob going crazy because of the song. However Squidward's song was quite annoying, and I guess that's why people don't like this episode. Because at times it can be very annoying, but I found this one to be quite decent.

    #40: Grandpappy the Pirate

In this episode, Mr. Krabs' pirate grandfather visits the Krusty Krab. This was definitely an interesting episode. But I liked this episode because it was quite fun to see the different clever methods that Patrick, Mr. Krabs, Spongebob and Squidward used to convince Mr. Krabs' grandfather that he is a pirate, like Squidward using plastic waves, and Patrick blowing his water up into the air and other effects. Although I'm sure that Grandpa Readbeard would've actually realised that the Krusty Krab was a fake ship as he was arriving. But a decent episode, especially for season 6, and I guess it's nice to see another member of someone's family.

    #39: Model Sponge

In this episode, when Spongebob believes that he is being let go from the Krusty Krab, he gets a job at as an actor. I actually liked this episode, and find it to be one of my favourites of Season 7. There were a lot of funny moments, especially Hans, completely funny to see him in an episode, especially for this late in the series. I also thought that this episode was something different to other Spongebob episodes, typical season 5, 6 or 7 episodes, and stands out. The problems with this episode are that there are some filler here and there, why would Spongebob believe that he is getting fired, but the main problem is that the audience knew throughout the episode that Spongebob wasn't being let go from the Krusty Krab, so there wasn't really anything to look forward to at the end. But a very good episode, considering it's season 7.

    #38: Overbooked

In this episode, Spongebob has to be in 3 places at once. This is a season 6 episode that I actually enjoy watching and one of the few episodes of season 6 that I want to see more than once. Mostly because there isn't much filler and every 11 minutes is used very well in this episode. It's also great, because there's 3 plots just in 1 episode, which is great, considering the fact that in most season 6 and 7 episodes, there's barely even 1 plot. It was quite clever how all three things which Spongebob had to be at linked to each other, in a way, liked with the hex drill. Spongebob repeatedly saying "I won't let Sandy down!" at the beginning of the episode was very funny. My only problem with this episode is the fact that at the end, Spongebob, should have said that he was overbooked, but I don't think that Spongebob even had the chance since he was interrupted. But I did find this to be a great episode.

    #37: Back to the Past

In this episode, Spongebob and Patrick mess up past events. I really did like this episode, and I always had done. It took me a while to actually figure out what was actually going on in this episode, but when I did, I noticed that it is actually one of the best-written Spongebob episodes in season 7. I didn't notice how clever this episode was. Spongebob and Patrick change events in the past to create bad future, and I've always been into time-travelling episodes/movies that have this kind of plot, and find it interesting, so I'm glad that there was an episode like this. It was really great to see the young Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy again, this time, talking and in action. The ending was funny, but also hard to get your head around what happened. It's a cleverly-written episode, and I hope that if there were any future Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy episode, to see them in action when they were younger.

    50. This plot was done so many times before. I don't like it because of it's unorginallity.

    49. Meh

    48. Don't really remember it, only saw it 3 or 4 times.

    47. Great episode. I would've put this at like 25.

    46. To me, this one is forgettable. I keep forgetting the existence of this episode. It's not bad, but I wouldn't really be in a rush to watch it again.

    45. Again, barely remember it.

    44. Barely remember it (And it's funny, because I've seen this one quite a few times.)

    43. I've grown to this one, but I still don't really like it.

    42. Meh

    41. This one actually annoyed me. The song got on my nerves.

    40. Interesting plot, I agree, but It is still pretty meh to me. There's nothing wrong with it, but I really think it's forgettable.

    39. It's ok. At least it's better than it's partner episode.

    38. Barely- you get the picture.

    37. It was........... ok I suppose, but the ending is really weird to me.

Not a bad list so far dude. I disagree with some of them majorly, but I can see why you might like most of them, and to be fair, after seeing most of the other Post-Movie garbage, these really don't seem so bad. You also give good reasons.

    #36: The Abrasive Side

In this episode, Spongebob finds it hard to say no, so Gary orders him an abrasive side. They should have done this way before. Spongebob's abrasive side is the rough green part on the other side of a sponge that people don't want to use, unless they want to scratch something. I just thought that that was actually pretty clever. Plus, some of the mean-spirited jokes that the abrasive side gives the characters are pretty funny and nicely thought out. They may be mean-spirited towards characters, but it makes a good difference between that and being mean-spirited to both the characters AND the audience, like maybe a character driving another character to suicidal thoughts... The episode has a nice twist ending, and it actually makes sense this time, unlike the episode further down this list.

    #35: Picture Day

In this episode, Spongebob must get to boating school for picture day, without getting dirty. Why do I like this episode? Again, simple plot. Simple plots are what majority of the classic episodes where based around, and why episodes like this are always fun to watch. It's the basic plot of a character getting from one point to another, avoiding many obstacles and getting further and further every time. And some of the scenes in this episode are just very well made and the idea of Spongebob trying to avoid getting dirty make some very good action scenes for younger children. Another point is that it isn't repetitive, as in you don't see Spongebob doing the same things for the same amount of time it took before. I also want to point out the fact that I really like the gag where Spongebob is pretending to be the cheese on the hot dog sign to hide. The flaw I have with this episode is obviously Patrick just being an idiot in that one scene... But that's just about it. It's short episode, not exactly my favourite, as that one is still to come. Also this episode kinda reminds about that part in "Missing Identity" where Spongebob retraces his steps, but I could be wrong.

    #34: Squiditis

In this episode, Squidward fakes an illness. If I were to redo this list, I probably wouldn't consider this episode in the top 50, but I guess this was my opinion then. I would rearrange things, but that would probably completely mess things up. The episode was kinda decent but forgettable. But the thing is, it seems to understand the fact that after a certain amount of years, jobs aren't as exciting as they used to be, so some people tend to come up with a reason to not come. That's pretty much what Squidward does in this episode, so I guess adults who are getting bored with their jobs and children who don't like school would like this episode, which is good, since Spongebob is aimed at children and adults. Something that I wouldn't say I like about this episode is the title. Spongebob seems to have this fairly recent gag where they keep adding "itis" to any word to turn that into a disease. It just annoys me for some reason, and they've also done it in "Oral Report" "Hello Bikini Bottom!" and "Squidbaby". But the episode is fairly decent anyway.

    50. Shellback Shenanigans: I personally do not like this episode because the premise has been so overdone, but I can see why you like it.

    49. 20,000 Patties Under the Sea: This one is just boring. Not a very good choice in my opinion.

    48. The Inmates of Summer: This episode is really funny. It should have been at least in the Top 30.

    47. Squidward in Clarinetland: Creative and really surreal, but not a lot of jokes. I agree with the placing.

    46. Blackjack: Good story, but not that funny. It definitely should have been here.

    45. For Here or to Go: Only watched it once, but it is quite entertaining. Agree with the placing.

    44. Slimy Dancing: Okay, but I would probably but it in the Top 70. The dance is funny, though.

    43. Blackened Sponge: See 48.

    42. Suction Cup Symphony: Great, but it really should be at least 40. Not a bad place.

    41. Earworm: I actually found this episode to be kind of bad. Not complaining, but I don't agree.

    40. Grandpappy the Pirate: Pretty good episode.

    39. Model Sponge: It's good, but not top 40 material.

    38. Overbooked: Not bad. Pretty funny.

    37. Back to the Past: Good choice, but should have been a bit lower.

    36. The Abrasive Side: Great pick. Should have been in the 20s.

    35. Picture Day: Good episode. Not this high, though.

    34. Squiditis: Haven't watched it.

I expect Plankton's Pet, It's a SpongeBob Christmas!, Hello Bikini Bottom!, Treats!, Krabs a la Mode, The Two Faces of Squidward, SpongeBob vs. the Patty Gadget, Friend or Foe, and Enchanted Tiki Dreams in the near future.
